Yahoo has decided that you have violated their “terms of use” and it has associated your ip address with the violation. You will need to chang your ip. Do not use your old id’s. Sign in a new account with a new ip.
March 24, 2003 at 1:42 pm #67936RJMemberThis has been going on a lot. Sounds like a name hijacking, just like the link that was posted explaining about the multiple logins and spamming issues.
I have never had it happen to me before so I won’t be of much help I have heard by others that in a few days it should usually clear up, if not I would file a complaint to Yahoo. Their email help isn’t that good to be quite honest, all they write back to you is to tell you how to ingnore people. Not too long after I had received one of their responses one they had a survey to fill out, lol, I rated them poorly; told them that they’re help and way about going things, uhmm, sucks, lol, but just give it some time and see what happens. I hope this gets resolved somehow.
A lot of people are getting away with stuff like this and it is a shame when the innocent do not get heard.
May 22, 2003 at 4:08 pm #67942olympic99MemberI am another victim of the Invalid Login message after using Yahoo Messenger for 3 years and only for instant messaging (no chat rooms).
I have broadband at home and barring power failures and computer crashes Yahoo Messenger has been running most of the past 3 years. It would start automatically every time the computer would reboot and any time the connection was lost and the computer reconnected to the net; I never shut messenger down.
Two weeks ago, I went for an interview out of town, and accessed messenger from a large internet cafe. I was in a hurry and the connection was too slow to download it and install it for some reason, so I used the Java version instead. Everything seemed to work fine, I managed to talk to some friends online, left, came back home, messenger was running just fine. Precisely 8 days later I started getting the Invalid Login message and appears there is a messenger ban, but email works.
I can only come up with three possible explanations:
1) Someone who had previously used the IP address of the internet cafe I was using for about an hour (there are 200 terminals at that city center location) must have been banned from yahoo for breaking their TOS, and yahoo decided that everyone else who ever used that IP address in say the last six months must also be banned. So effectively I’m locked out from my account because I happened to travel 400 miles for a day to go to a job interview, used an internet cafe for an hour, said hi to two friends and came home the next day! If that theory is correct, I would find it an unacceptable policy.
2) Yahoo thought someone was trying to use messenger from another location or that I was sharing my password with someone miles away (as would have been seen from the ID, 432 miles in this case) and decided to block access to messenger. Even if this was to make sense, if this is the reason, yahoo should be very well aware that many users prefer to leave messenger on, and if they access it from elsewhere then yahoo will come up with “you’ve been logged out as you have been logged in to a different computer” or something similar. I don’t see why I should shut down messenger when being away for a day, and even worse, if I was to miss any messages I’d like to see them when I get home and messenger restarts there and have the archiving on, not in an internet cafe where they (offline messages) would be lost once I leave.
Perhaps the new version of yahoo has a direct option to go away and promptly log out from your home yahoo without causing security alerts.
Incidentally, my computer at home was logged in non-stop (no crash) for 14 days when yahoo messenger stopped working. I’ve rebooted since but it made no change at all.3) By using the Java version, someone managed to block my account even though I chatted or messaged no one new.
Either way, it’s an annoying feature and naturally no real messages from yahoo (none at all actually) about it.
May 22, 2003 at 4:25 pm #67946NettiMemberIn my opinion, unless a booter has openly told you they are locking you out of your yahoo messenger account, then the problem is with the Yahoo servers. Yahoo knows about the “ID LOCKED” problem, and has for about 6 months or so. When you go to yahoo help and look up this problem, this is what Yahoo says:
“If you receive this error message, please be aware that we are working on this problem and expect to have it resolved very soon. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
Our group is just logging in using their different accounts. Some people have actually been locked out of 5 separate accounts.
I don’t think that it’s anything YOU did personally. Most accounts are ok after 1-4 days.
Good luck!

I don’t know what kind of booters you know….but no booter has ever been so “kind” when booting me. They don’t bother telling me they are booting me. They usually just do it an have little party on their own b/c they knocked a bunch of us off or locked us out. But they don’t talk about it publically. I found out who some of the booters were in a room I was in and then from others I found what they were doing.
May 22, 2003 at 10:32 pm #67945NettiMemberOh noooo Oreo… These lovely gentlemen, Openly tell us. “ok you f***(##)&”, just because you pissed me off and said something I didn’t like, you’re account will now be locked for 1 hour, or 1 day, So we’ll see you then, bye bye”.
Oh they love to brag to us that they’ve locked someone out of their account! So now we’re suppose to be afraid of them. One guy actually kept booting the entire room, telling us he was going to continuously do this until the guy (someone who made him mad) came back and apologized.
We have many booters that come in the room, get mad, then say “Well, Bye Bye John341, it was nice knowing you”. Then John341 is gone.
They are getting more brazen each day. I almost wish they wouldn’t tell us, and just let it happen. lol
So normally we just leave, make our own room, and go back later.
What a joy it is dealing with “children”.
May 23, 2003 at 12:20 am #67930mariettelarkinMemberOk, I’m blonde, dumb, naieve and old…but would someone tell me exactly how this booter thing operates? I have been surfing and chatting for over three years now and have never had it happen to me. YOu mean someone can actually lock you up just by talking to you in a chat room? And what kind of chat rooms are these? Sorry to sound so dumb!
May 23, 2003 at 3:51 pm #67944NettiMemberMariette. These ppl are hackers/booters with special programs that can interfere with yahoo causing you to be logged out of yahoo. They also have programs which can LOCK your yahoo account so that you cannot log in for a few hours or days. These ppl reside in ALL rooms. They hop from room to room just testing their skills. If you have not incountered anyone booting you out of yahoo, or locking your account consider yourself lucky. Sometimes you would never know if it was a yahoo glitch, or if it was a boot. But believe me, they are out there in full force!!!!

Theoretically yes. However, you may be surprised to hear that (I am in the UK) since this problem has happened, accessing the yahoo help pages is actually not possible. In fact, even trying to go to http://www.yahoo.com does not work, and even trying to start the java version of messenger on this computer no longer works (comes up with a message to update the microsoft java virtual machine, which is no longer officially available and not installed on this computer). All help pages to do with messenger and anything to do with reporting messenger bugs simply do not display on my browser, nevertheless all other yahoo-related sites and pages work just fine. It would appear that not only I cannot login to messenger, but I am also locked out from accessing any messenger help, so it has to be more than a bug that caused this.
May 23, 2003 at 5:10 pm #67943NettiMemberOlympic. I was originally referring to not be able to log into yahoo, or being locked out of your account. But it looks like you have a much more serious issue than that. I’ve got to think that you’re computer may need a major overhaul. I spoke to a few people from UK, Australia, South Africa, and have not heard any of them having any difficulties accessing Yahoo in anyway. So you may be right in the fact that you got some bug while you were away. I’d try to revert your system back to the date BEFORE you went out of town, and see if that works. Good luck!
May 23, 2003 at 8:05 pm #67940olympic99MemberIt would appear that it is an internet Explorer-related Java problem.
Before I got locked out, the only noticeable problem was that the pop-up window whenever I would start messenger would only appear half the time (sometimes when windows reboos, sometimes if I had to actually shut down messenger for whatever reason and restart it).
Internet Explorer 6.0.288.1106.xpsp2.021108-1929 is the version I have. The problem occured about 6 hours after the latest windows update changed a few things. There is no easy way to restore the system to the way it was. However, considering I cannot even load the Java version of messenger, it looks like Microsoft’s efforts to stop supporting their Java Virtual Machine and Yahoo’s efforts to create webpages with Java have crossed. It is up to Yahoo to fix it. About the only thing I can do is get another Windows XP computer which won’t be for a while….
May 23, 2003 at 8:32 pm #67947NettiMemberOlympic. On your system, you have the option to “Restore to a prior date”. If you restore you system to the date prior to going on vacation, it should remove the bad update, and allow you to view whatever you did back then.
