Hello guys,
Ok, Windows Live Messenger….As the title says, my msn crashes after signing in. I’ve tried unistalling and reinstalling it several times, i’ve even tried other versions of msn and still nothing. Just recently i tried the new Windows Live Messenger just incase the new error that was fixed refers to me. (Though it doesn’t tell me i have an error but thought it’s worth a try)
Anyway, my Windows messenger works, i.e. the free thing you get with XP etc, but MSN is not happening. I sign in, then bam, it crashes.
I need help guys, please help me??!?!?!?
😀
BTW, my internet is connected through a wired router, if that means anything. Though i shouldn’t think so as my internet connection is great otherwise.

September 19, 2006 at 12:56 am #152207PhilipModeratorHi Andrew:
Have a look at my thread here https://bigblueball.com/forums/windows-live-messenger/37628-those-you-experiencing-error-1603-problems.html Give it a try and post back if you still have problems. 🙂
September 20, 2006 at 11:12 pm #152209h3xx1MemberIt’s likely to be a port problem on your router, I had a very similar problem with mine (netgear DG834v2). I suggest visiting your router supplier’s website and updating the firmware for it.
Failing that, check that the ports for MSN messenger are open(6901 & 6891 usually).
Visit this website PortForward.com – Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall, click the link for the router you are using, then the link for msn messenger. From there it will tell you how to access your router and open the ports for the program.Adam
July 17, 2008 at 4:37 pm #152219bikeyMemberhi i’ve tried both the above links and i’m still having the same problem the guy who posted this was having.
when trying to forward ports (post by h3xx1) for msn i could only get up to msnmessnger6 after that it says ‘can not add any more entities’ other than that i did everything the page told me.
i tried registering the files on dos, successfully registed REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL and REGSVR32 MSSIP32.DLL but i get an error message when trying to register REGSVR32 INITPKI.DLL and REGSVR32 wintrust.dll.
i also used the windows install clean up utility to remove windows live and every other program associated with windows live.
nothing worked. please help, below is information that may be of interest.
i am using windows live messenger version 2008 (build 8.5.1302.1018)
using windows vista home premium
using wireless lan to connect to internet via a router (D-Link DI-524) and i have tried resetting the router
using norton internet security (turned off windows firewall and norton firewall)
ran a full system scan using windows defenderJuly 17, 2008 at 4:42 pm #152220bikeyMemberif it helps.. there is no error message when i crash. it just says something like ‘windows has encountered a problem, we must close this program’ but i does not come up with a reason why, a solution or a diagnoisis
July 17, 2008 at 8:32 pm #152210Doris KenneyParticipantMy suggestion is to remove Norton completely using the Norton Removal Tool and install a different firewall (like AVG Free version). Norton is notorious for blocking all kinds of things, not to mention, if it’s the free version that came on the machine and you’ve not upgraded to a paid account, then you have no protection.
Also, if Norton is your software firewall of choice, then you need to make sure Windows firewall is disabled. Disabling Norton completely is almost impossible in my experience, even if you’ve told it to it rarely does. It could still be conflicting with Windows firewall if that is still turned on.
Given that the application shuts down unexpectedly, I’d also suggest a complete virus scan with up to date definitions, as well as at least 2 separate spyware scans (different programs such as SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot) with up to date definitions.
With regard to the DLL’s. I had some trouble on Vista registering some DLL’s recently. I actually had to unregister them and then re-register them to get them to work.
As for the router, I know nothing about port forwarding, but if the date and time are correct on both the computer and the router and they match, I’m not so sure it’s really a part of the problem. Although, you might check and see if there are any firmware upgrades for the router.
I use the latest WLM version, Vista Home Premium, and access my D-Link router via wireless and have no problems whatsoever.
Good luck and let me know if any of these ideas help at all.

Download latest messenger and try to re-install it. If it still creates problem, it should be windows problem.
September 20, 2009 at 12:45 am #152221kamakazieMemberhey folks i got a problem with the msn when i sign in it crashes but doesn’t say errors i mean it closes when im signed in but looks like i never did but i sign in and when im online just the split second im in it crashes how do i fix that
September 20, 2009 at 12:49 am #152211Doris KenneyParticipantCan you tell me what operating system you are using as well as what version of WLM?
Have you scanned for malware that might be keeping the program from running? Did you change anything on your system right when the problem started? And are you having any other problems with the computer?
September 20, 2009 at 1:00 am #152222kamakazieMemberi think i have windows xp put i remember putting windows 7 but it says xp on the system i did my scans cause before i had problems with the internet browser was saying about blank and says warning this site can have those virus but really it doesn’t cuz it said it to all the places but now thats ok and since i got that virus and now its gone its affecting msn so i did the scans its fine now with that and so i got xp and the version i thinks its windows live messenger 8.0 or 8.5

September 20, 2009 at 1:09 am #152224kamakazieMemberi have xp or windows 7 well says xp in system on the control panel i have windows live messenger 8.0 or 8.5 and like b4 it was the virus of the internet explorer that caused it but i scanned and it removed that 1 so i dunno if its still affecting it or do i uninstall and reinstall but i did maybe has to do with the registry first but if so how do u do it from the registry help me like remove from the registry
September 20, 2009 at 4:06 pm #152212Doris KenneyParticipantWow, ok. You have a lot going on there. First let’s scan for malware, then completely remove WLM, and finally reinstall the newest most up to date version.
Please download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware to your desktop.
- Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
- At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
- If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
- Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
- When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
- Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- If it wants to reboot to finish cleaning, please do so at that time.
- When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location in case you need it for future reference. You do NOT need to post the results of the log.
Then, I’d suggest downloading RevoUninstaller so we can try a thorough removal (and you won’t have to go searching for files/folders or registry entries). You will use this to uninstall instead of going through add/remove programs. Once you start RevoUninstaller, it will populate a screen with all your programs. Choose your WLM and click uninstall. It will ask for what level you want to look for with regard to files that may be left over. Choose #4. Then go ahead with the uninstall. Revo will first scan for all the files/folders/entries it can find for WLM. The next step is using the built in un-installer to remove it. Afterwards, Revo looks to see if there are any remaining files and folders on your machine. If so you will be given the lists of what remains. Choose Select All and Delete for any files it finds.
After you have finished with RevoUninstaller, please reinstall WLM and see if it now works.
