ParticipantI will copy/paste the information I found from another site:
Causes
- The system clock may be set incorrectly.
- The Dynamic Link Library (DLL) softpub.dll, may not be registered on the system.
- Internet Explorer may be using an invalid proxy server.
Resolutions
- Double click on the clock in the taskbar and make sure the system clock is set correctly.
- Register softpub.dll using the regsvr32.exe tool.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open dialog box, type regsvr32 softpub.dll and then click OK.
Restart MSN Messenger. - Remove any Internet Explorer proxy server settings
In Internet Explorer, click Tools and then click Internet Options.
In the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab.
Click LAN Settings…
Untick the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections) checkbox.
Click OK and OK again Internet Options.

ParticipantPossible Solution #2:
The error code 80048820 is usually caused by an incorrect clock/date setting so be sure to check your system’s clock and calendar.
Be particularly certain that it is set to the right month, the right day and the right time. Ensure that the AM or PM is set correctly as well as the year. Often the time will be correct but the year will not be. Likewise, it’s common for the time to be correct but the AM/PM setting is out.

Did you have a look at the solution #2 that I posted earlier? Try doing what that says and if you still have the same problem, then you can do what bingo did and solved his problem.

MemberHi, I’ve been having this damned problem for the last two days. Error 80048820 seems to not like me, at all. Wants to destroy my msn life and whatnot. Anyways, I’ve tried all of the fixes: correcting date/time, regestering the dll’s, going through the regristry, uninstalling and reinstalling messenger, reconfigured my firewall several times (disabled it, even) ran several different virus scans and spyware removers, but to no avail!
Interesting enough, messenger tells me that the reason I cannot connect to the service is because my firewall may be blocking it from connecting to the service. Funny, because I have my firewall disabled.
Is it me, or does Microsoft really want me to die?
I’d really like to not have to format my computer and all that time consuming stuff, is there anything anyone can suggest for me? It would be greatly appreciated!

ParticipantUnfortunately, this error seems to be pretty broad, and no solution fixes it for everyone. Take a look here for the latest information.

MemberOh, I forgot to mention one thing about my little MSN problem. It seems I can’t even access my hotmail account. And as such, I cannot post replies on that msn blog site you sent me to.
And, if that wassn’t bad enough, I can’t even get onto my school email. I hate Microsoft. -_-

ParticipantI’m begining to think that maybe, just maybe you account is suspened. I mean if you are not able to sign into hotmail, or even post the replies then I would say your account is suspened.

ParticipantNekuel, here’s a trick that you can try:
Add at least one more year to your window’s clock (e.g. 2006), apply, then run msn. After you do that, try to run this file and change windows time back to normal.
Hope it helps you.October 28, 2005 at 1:38 pm #130478Nekuel
MemberHi-Ho-Hum, MSN is dumb. I’m fairly certain that my MSN account is not suspended, as I can sign in without problem at my girlfriends house. When I attempt to sign in on this computer, I get a ‘This Page Cannot be Displayed’ page come up. Seems my computer does not want to connect to the MSN server. I’m almost 100% certain that there is a virus on this thing, but I’m not sure. I’ve ran several anti-virus programs, and spy-ware removers as well.
Normally, I wouldn’t hesitate to format the hunk of junk and start over, but this isn’t exactly my computer; it’s my parents’.
Oh, princeG, thanks for the help, but it didn’t exactly work. Looks like I’m gonna have to format this thing. Gah
