Eh, how about we just leave mods and these…whatever you want to call thems…separate. We have our mods, and the system Jeff has now for recruiting them seems to be working just fine…

MemberAlso, wouldn’t the pessimistic people be disappointed if they thought they were deserving of it and were’nt given it? (Psst…I’m an optimist, this ISN’T me! :))
ys8er, what are you talking about? We aren’t looking for new member ranks, just to add one.

MemberI wouldn’t refer to it as a “member rank” more as a special title given to special people. Problems could arise however and the title can be taken away. The main problem is though the whole forum thing. Would it say Guru/Advisor (or whatever) for ? Then people could identify where they are the Guru/Advisor. Yea, it would be something like a step towards becoming a moderator. It would show us what we would have to do to become a moderator. The qualities needed at least. Well anyway I think it’s a great idea and if we put our heads together and figure out the small problems we can have yet another great feature here in BBB!

I know that I’m new here, but I’ve been reading more than posting. To me if someone didn’t get the title and they thought themselves deserving, it would mean more that maybe their posts weren’t as good as they thought and it might be a wake up call. But, again, I haven’t been here long…so I could be wrong. I just wanted to give my little comment…I feel comfortable here as a newbie that I think it’s OK to express myself.

Participantfirst off – welcome, Roisin…
now for my two bits. I think it’s a decent idea, but not really something we need. sure there may be a few people that know a lot about a particular topic and thus hang out in a certain forum all the time, but that should be fairly obvious to anyone who reads a few posts from that section. whether or not we really need a special “guru” title to identify them… debatable. I think it’d end up being more hassle than its worth.
besides, what exactly would a semi-moderator do? they wouldnt have mod power, meaning no locking/editing/moving of threads or whatever other special powers the almighty mods wield… all they’d do is the same thing they’ve done all along, but now with a fancy title.
i enjoy coming here and helping whoever I can, I consider myself to be pretty good with computers, i’d be honored to be considered a “guru” but in all reality, I have no desire to be a mod. way too much power to put in my hands. “Understand, Frodo, I would use this ring from a desire to do good. But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine.”but, in the end its up to Jeff and the mods.

ParticipantI like the idea simply for the effect it could have on new members. When asking a question in a strange place, you have no idea who knows what they’re talking about and who is simply talking out of there “rear”. Obviously the post count title’s can be a clue, but that doesn’t qualify a member as being the expert in all things. I think the idea has merit and could be of value if implemented correctly.
As for ego boosting, I know I sure could use one of those every now and then. What’s the harm in making someone feel appreciated. I’m sure if someone was deserving they wouldn’t be the type to go too mad with pride. 😉

It’s not about changing the posting style or permissions of the member, it is simply to give new members or are less accustomed to the members already here an idea of posting quality, if you like.
Y’know…what shifter said. 🙂

That’s the idea, leave the mods and the X’s seperate, and just as we seem to have had slight confusion, it’s not changing member titles, its simply an addition to the ones already here.

ParticipantWell I understand that…there was just talk about it being a pre-mod title and I was just saying, let’s not touch that. The system for mods that Jeff has now seems to be running fine, the idea is a good one, just leave the pre-mod stuff out of it.

Memberthis would be a good idea if our moderators here were like other ones, and didn’t do anything and acted immaturely. But, we don’t have that problem here. So far, our moderator status is a very high honor, and there is no need for anyone else.
November 20, 2004 at 4:22 am #104960Spike
MemberI agree with Camster. I think Mod status and MotM status is enough to let any Newbie know who’s who around here. Besides, if you add another one, chances are they’ll probably just get confused, anyway…;)
Also, there haven’t been any big changes around here, so even if everyone were to say yes, Jeff probably still wouldn’t do it. But, hey, pove me wrong. 🙂

But, hey, pove me wrong.Reverse physiology doesn’t always work there spike. Jeff also said that the whole site will have a new image on new years, so don’t pull any of that ok? 🙂
Also, if anything I believe it will give those who know what they’re talking about respect from new members asking questions. I know what its like answering a question, and the new member ignoring you because they are expecting an answer from a moderator.
And also, this guru would help the moderator(s) run the forum TOPIC, and not the forum base (this would also be ‘helpful’ “this should be locked” and “you shouldn’t do that” comments if you get my drift.).

MemberLet me just clarify a few things.
RabidKitten – Sorry, I originally misunderstood you, and fully agree that it shouldn’t necessarily be a pre-moderator thing.
Spike – I really don’t think it’s confusing, or would be confusing to a new member. And if you read the whole thread, Jeff did say he would consider it. You wanted proof it was being considered? Just go back to the first page.
Detn8r – Yeah, they’d be there showing a willingness to implement forum policies and such. They would have to show a history of good conduct in the forums, things like that.
