I am an honest hacker, I hack my own networks, and my office network, I don’t do anything illegal, I have no reason to touch any other systems.

Too bad hacking myself to better my own security isn’t a crime though. As I said, I don’t hack for fun, I don’t hack my friends, I don’t hack websites with kiddie SQL injection, I am A NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR, my job is to ‘hack” and make sure my network is secure. Clearly you didn’t know what I “hack”. Now please, stop calling my a hypocrite, I’m not one.

Oh yeah. I remember those days when I was learning hacking for the first time. I used to hack my own computers. I loved those things, like hacking my own id or computer. feels great 😛 moreover, it helps me to make my computer more secure. so its all good.
By the way Mr MIS Superstar, well, I do respect your field and profession since my roomie, and some of my closest friends are studying MIS. so its nice to hear from u. Infact one MIS graduate came over to my college few weeks ago and we had a hacker seminar where she demonstrated various ways to hack a network. So I do respect your field and your career option.
But I shuld tell u something. Yes I go to college, I study, earn good grades, and do jobs also. but I dont spend my time in hacking some one’s computer unless he is realy threatening others and pose a threat to me eventualy.
For example last night wheni was in the chat room, the same kid’s friend who was swearing my friend the other day, and started booting every single person in the room. eventualy I dont know he used some kind of software which jammed every one’s computer, even if they used other clients. and ultimately every one was booted. he does this for fun and each time he comes online.
So tell me Mr Superstar, is this justified for ppl who just go there for peaceful chatting? Well atleast I dont think so. When I return from my job, tired and all alone now, I DO like to spend some time with my friends, either in PM or in Chat room. and I dont like being drawn into any kind of mess, same goes for my friends also. So dont u think that those jobless, hopeless kids who was misusing their softwares for malicious purpose shuld be taught a lesson by using their own medicine? I definitely think so. coz I am not the kind of person who will just sit back, take all the beatings and mumble nothing coz its not me who starts the trouble. But I try to be the one who stops all the troubles by dealing with the root of the cause rather than just ignoring it.
But I assure u and others that, I hv never misused my skills or softwares against any innocent person or for any wrong purpose. and wont do it also 🙂 coz, I also want to be a Cyber Cop 😉
A few kind words for Miss Roisin. Grow up. Don’t judge people on the basis of their id names or spellings. Different people have different styles. Accept it.
To Dave and N3m3s1s, if u guys are true hackers then u shuld know the first basic principle of hackers. Thats called RESPECT. Learn to respect each other and each other’s skills, if none of you are doing anything wrong in your opinions, rather than throwing mud at each other’s face trying to prove *I am better than u* thing. So far what has been discussed here, it seems neither of u knows whats hacking. Read Jeff’s message again and then come over here.

Nemesis I personally feel that any GOOD network administrator has to be a skilled hacker as the saying goes ‘To catch a thief you must think like one”. So of my best friends who are damn good network administrators are very good hackers, it is part of the job. Yes I do feel that the word HACKERS has acquired too great a negative cannotation. Originally hackers were just people who believed that knowledge belonged to every one and not just in the hands of a few powerful corporations. Linus Torvalds being the best example. They were and are strong believers in open sources. The media could not find a better word for people breaking into a system for malicious reasons, so they grouped every one under the term hackers. Hackers generally denifne themselves as people who want to know EVERYTHING about how a computer works and what flaws it has and how it can be repaired. Hackers are not there to just break into a system just because they are vunerable.

The definitions of hacker are clear cut.
According to the article, you can be a hacker by meeting any of 3 criteria:
- Brilliant programmer
- Intruder and criminal
- Security expert
Of course these all refer to the domain of computers. Because Dave is a brilliant programmer and an expert in security, he is a hacker. End of story. Can we drop this nonsense?

The word derives from several other words.
An exellent programmer doesnt make you a hacker, but thats my personal opinion. Hell im sure he is a good admin and programmer, I aint trying to put nobody down here. Yeh lets drop this **** its getting way overboard and off topic. I guess that everyone has theyre own views and opinions on hackers and aint ever gonna be the same for everyone. i am a white hat hacker. I find flaws and exploits and report them to the site owner.
i also help secure network connections and wireless signals by coding them.
i also bruteforce user passwords for different apps, to help users determine if a malicious hacker could use it.
i also am my friends’ tech support, my teachers tech support, my neighbors tech support, etc.
i do dabble with viruses and trojans, but I do this in one fashion only: I write a virus, cut the router from the internet so its only on the local network, then use the virus on the second computer. I reformat and plug back into the net.then there are the GOOD malicious things hackers can do:
i have bypassed every site filter the school has up, opened a dos prompt (on an ultra secure novell network), and found a backdoor on the schools site. cmon, if you were at my school and you were my friend, trust me, youd love me for hacking.get the stereotypical hacker out of your mind. there are good and bad hackers.
*just idley wonders where the “just because you star it doesn’t mean its ok” rule went to*
Anywho, regardless, looks like all that can be said can be said, the definition is laid out there and regardless of your disagreement, it’s hard to argue with an actual definitionof a word. it’s like trying to argue that the word “read” cannot be used past tense, only present. *shrug*
