Have you accepted file downloads from strangers?
November 17, 2002 at 7:48 pm #66178FaizanMemberNEVER…because my friend accepted one and the stranger hacked him…by getting his IP!
November 20, 2002 at 2:46 am #66173cindyMemberhi well i only accept a file if i know the person well enough other wise i wont accept the file accepting files off unknown people is a risk and im not taking such a risk,
November 20, 2002 at 2:53 am #66175magistykMemberThere’s probably 100 reasons why I wouldn’t accept a file download from a stranger. It could be a virus, a trojan, a hack, porn, anything… and you wouldn’t know until you opened it.
November 20, 2002 at 7:34 pm #66179MissandaztoodGirlMemberWell, i have my reasons to accept o not a file, if i don’t know the ñerson i try to say that i can’t or another day cuz’ it’s very dangerous!!!…
November 21, 2002 at 3:51 pm #66170rustedtightMemberQuote:quote: Have you accepted file downloads from strangers?General answer…… NO, tho I did once a loooong time ago on ICQ, I got a virus.:(
Now I gotta know you better before I will accept a file and then only a pic (JPG), if its too small or too large I will reject it and ask for a URL that has the file. This request often sorts out the genuine from the attempts to deliver a trojan.
Ofcourse, its assumed you have up to date anti virus software checking each file download, otherwise you have no right to complain if you are infected by what you have accepted.November 23, 2002 at 1:30 am #66177wisegirlMemberI have in the past, wouldn’t anymore because it’s not safe, and if it is from someone I don’t know well, why should I?
November 23, 2002 at 8:54 am #66176PhilMemberno matter who a file is from…i always check it with a virus scanner…although it still may not be 100% reliable…its worth checking though….even a good friend may not even be aware that they have a virus!!!i would never ever ever accept a *.exe file from anyone!! that would just be silly…..we learn from our mistakes……even tho i’ve learnt from my brother coming into my room everyday and asking “you wouldn’t accept executable files would you?!?!?!”…:D
November 23, 2002 at 12:12 pm #66172cindyMemberHi phill think you raised a good point it is possible to get a virus from more or less anyone. and the person may not no they have a virus unless they have virus scan installed on there computer
think in future i’ll get my friends to scan before i say ok send file.
Either that or take no files i know my virus scanner finds a virus as ive been warned a number of times when i have a virus in my email. then i do scan and let my virus software sort it.:(November 23, 2002 at 5:13 pm #66169rustedtightMemberQuote:quote:its assumed you have up to date anti virus software checking each file download, otherwise you have no right to complain if you are infected by what you have accepted. The important words there are NOT ‘virus software’ they ARE ‘up to date’, its useless to trust a virus program that is not regularly updated, minimum of once a week.
As an example…… Norton added 7 new signatures yesterday, if thats indicative of what happens then 7 by 7 = 49 thats 40-50 new virii that could infect you between weekly updates of AV signatures.
That we are not regularly infected is a miracle.:DNovember 23, 2002 at 5:55 pm #66171cindyMemberhi rustedtight yes i have updates weekly for my antivirus software.
but with so many viruses around dont think im safe in accepting a file even off a friend. you know what they say rustedtight. its best to be safe than sorry. was on web one night caught a virus on some site but
dont worry it was not bbb ive done a full scan no viruses were detected i do a scan before i go on line but problem is i could be hit on line by virus then i have to hope my updated virus software will sort it out:(July 5, 2003 at 8:25 pm #66182coolguyj2MemberQuote:quote:rustedtight wrote:

the imp wrds are ‘up to date’ but beleve me if ur definitions are up to date, it doesnt mean that they can remove the virus, they can only help u detect them…. for that u need tech help from site, likeCode:gives u all the soln for removing the virus! so bookmark their site now!!!
July 6, 2003 at 4:10 am #66181DavidParticipantQuote:quote:Have you accepted file downloads from strangers?Sure would, and do.
Doesn’t matter where I get Images or source code from, nobody’s going to hack me though a *.asp/*.aspx file or any other text source code file.
I don’t ever accept executables (*.EXE/*.OCX/*.DLL/*.386 etc.), that’s just plain dumb to do.
July 6, 2003 at 6:27 am #66174detn8rParticipantI do.
Now with the help of MSN Messenger 6.0 that scans it auto after download, and the image viewable thru the msgbox, it helps alot.As with RT, I will only accept JPG or GIF files. Unless I trust the person, I would do the same as Dave, and not accept files such as .exe or .dll.
July 9, 2003 at 10:46 pm #66188rude_ppl_sukMemberi NEVER accept files from a stranger. u dont know what ur gonna get.
