I personally have accepted dozens and dozens of files from people. I have been trojaned only one time, this guy wanted to get into my computer, so he had a third party send me a program, and it was trojaned, but somehow he messed it up and couldn’t gain remote access to my pc. I found out about it cause i sent the program to a good buddy of mine, and the guy hacked into his computer, stole some of his usernames then crashed his pc.
When good friends of mine or family members ask me about internet security, I tell them just to not use credit cards online, that’s what a lot of hackers are targeting people for in the first place. I used paypal, wouldn’t really reccommend it either, a guy got me with fraud thru it, took a long time for paypal to refund my money, and it was sad, the guy ripped me for over $100, and on top of that, paypal charged me a $10 penalty fee for supposedly ripping him LMAO. Best bet is to not exchange any money online whatsoever.
Over time I have learned how to read people, and what to look out for. I personally only accept files from good friends. Yes anyone could send you a trojan/virus but if you have known someone for longer then a month, and they haven’t been pushy with you to accept files from them, odds are they aren’t gonna be a threat. If you have only known someone for a few days or weeks and they are pushy with you about accepting files, odds are they have bad intentions. This guy i know who trojaned a LOT of people, he would tell the targets, “Go ahead scan it for viruses, it’s clean” cause he knew it wouldn’t be detected. If they are pushy with you, and keep telling you the file is clean, then don’t trust them. Unless they are targeting you specifically, most of these guys will just move on to another person.
Learn how to pick up on things, like how people type, so if they switch usernames, you will know it’s the same person, everyone types in a unique way, watch their grammar. If you are gonna accept files from people, a firewall won’t protect you if you are trojaned, the key is to watch your open connections thru command prompt, so if someone is in your pc you will know it. And if you are gonna accept files from people, I would highly reccommend you only accept files on aim, thru a direct connection, so you can netstat them and get their IP. I learned this from a very computer savy friend of mine, I sent him a program, and after he got it, he pasted me my IP and told me if it was trojaned he would contact my ISP, and tell them about it.Best bet is to not accept any files period.
July 15, 2003 at 7:26 pm #66187sweet_teen_chickMemberWell I think everytime I chat with a guy but like after getting to know them at least a little bit, I mean if like a guy in the chat room just sends out a file then I dont accept it. My only problem is me sending out files not accepting other peoples files.

the imp wrds are ‘up to date’ but beleve me if ur definitions are up to date, it doesnt mean that they can remove the virus, they can only help u detect them…. for that u need tech help from site, likeAgain you have missed the point………. If your virus definitions are ‘up to date’ then the ‘virus’ is NOT installed obviously….hence you dont need to remove a virus that is NOT there. 😀 Think about it.
Symantec offers virus def update daily, avail yourself of them.

Now I gotta know you better before I will accept a file and then only a pic (JPG), if its too small or too large I will reject it and ask for a URL that has the file. This request often sorts out the genuine from the attempts to deliver a trojan.
Ofcourse, its assumed you have up to date anti virus software checking each file download, otherwise you have no right to complain if you are infected by what you have accepted.Have you ever heard of stenographying? It where a file is hidden within the picture, like a digital watermark. The file could be a virus, so i would still be carful, even if using stenography to infect someone with a virus is still a relativly new consept.
August 15, 2003 at 2:52 am #66190darkc0neMemberthis is why i like norton system works…it scans it the second u get it.if it is a bad file u can ether delete it or stick in this cool jar…teeehee
I only realy get files from H1ddenShinobou and id trust him with my whole comp.:DAugust 15, 2003 at 4:04 pm #66167rustedtightMemberQuote:quote:Have you ever heard of stenographying? Thank god. If this ever gets off the ground, we may be in some very, very deep stuff. This could mean much, MUCH more on the Internet can be potently unsafe.

Why “completely shut down” ?? the P2P networks already serve up a slew of trojans and virus infected files and they all remain running to serve up more the next day.:D:D

Heh. There is no harm in using credit cards online, not a lot anyway. I basically accept files, but not all. And someone mentioned accepting picture files, well I heard there is a vulnerability in ICQ so that it limits the characters in the filename, so if theres a 7 character limit plus the extension, then something like this could happen (letters in bold are what ICQ users see): picture.gif.exe
