KeymasterWeird I have the same problem. It freezes and tells me program not responding. Does it sometimes and sometimes not but it does it more often. I just keep trying until it doesn’t do it which takes like 3 tries. I’ve ran everything dealing with adware and antivirus and nothing. Only thing I can think of is the aimres.dll file that I replaced a long time ago which removes the ads on aim but then again it was working fine for a long time after having replaced that file.

Memberjust to let you guys know, I fixed the problem, I changed the port that AIM accesses from 5190 to any old port (100 in my case) worked like a charm. lol, thanks so much

MemberI have the same problem but I have changed the port, I have tried auto config and nothing seems to work.
It does appear to have logged me in as I get sign off and on noticesjust my buddy list is always stuck on “starting services”

Memberif you are running through a router, foward the port you are using for aim to your computer. then run auto configure and try aim. That also worked for me:confused::D:rolleyes::)

MemberIt’s your router. Most Linksys routers do this. I’ve had to help out my friends constantly with theirs.
1. Go to http://192.168.1.1 and put “admin” for password. and login.
2. Go to Applications & Gaming at the top.
3. Make a new entry and put AIM. Ports: 5190-5193. Protocol: TCP.
4. To find out your IP Address. Go to Start > Run > ipconfig .. and it will tell you there. just add the last 3 numbers of it into the last box in the Applications & Gaming.
That should fix everything. if it works, let me know by IMing me @ notastud231

ParticipantMy aim stops at “starting services” and does nothing with version 5.5. I can click on the taskbar icon and get my buddy list, but the list of names doesnt load.
with aim version 5.2, it gets to “starting services” and then crashes (says it has encountered an error and needs to close). It gives an error report and all that jazz
aim 5.9 works, but lets face it, it’s bloatware. I guess u could call it blaware =P
Trillian also works, but i just want to use an older version of aim. I like the way its set up
My os is windows xp with service pack 1
Wireless cable connection, all ports forwarded
I have tried all suggestions in this thread, but no good.
Please help!March 25, 2005 at 12:50 pm #42655akcrono
ParticipantI got it to work, and for all of you who cant fix the problem, read on.
I installed aim 5.2. That gave me an error message instead of freezing at starting services. The advanced error message said something about urlmon.dll. I searched for my computer for this file and found about 10 of them in different areas of my computer.
Now, 2 days before I started having this problem, I installed samplitude (a digital music recording program), but I had not restarted the computer until right before the problem occured. Since there was a urlmon.dll in this folder, I simply renamed it to some random name, and aim loaded up fine!
Now if you’re using aim 5.5 and you have the starting services problem,i guess u should downgrade to aim 5.2 and see what the error is.

MemberI had the same problem and when I made the new entry into my router AIM worked fine again, but then after using it for about 2 minutes it tried to reconnect and again got stuck at starting services. I tried to log in again but it still got stuck. Any more suggestions?

MemberOK, I fixed it (sort of) with help from you guys, here is a little background. I have never had any problems with my AIM, I use middleman + v5.5.3591 ( with a little modding i did it, loading screen, changed menus ect ) runs beautifuly on my desktop for a year and a half, just got a brand new laptop, and my AIM ( same combination, + modding ) and it worked fine for the first week, and then last night my AIM started to hang on starting services. I uninstalled, reinstalled the old version no mods / middleman, the new version, ran Nortons A/V, set my ports again on my router / Zone Alarm, cleaned out the registry… all to no avail it still hung on Starting Services – for 5 mins before finally loading.
FIX – It seems to only be freezing the first time the program is opened now, but after I can connect instantly. I also tried the newest beta version, same deal. Any suggestions?
