My friend was doing a report on how Instant messaging can cause problems with writing skills. Scholastic says that talking on aim will make spelling worse and ruin typing skills. I have found that though i may use words like “u” and “k” i dont use them at school when im writing. My typing skills have improved amazingly and I am i much better typer than i was several months ago. Lighten up scholastic, you guys suck.:D And im sure everyone here would agree with me.
July 19, 2003 at 11:34 am #59191PhilMemberI agree with you completely…when I’m writing, I never do short hand, but I must admit, that when I am typing a document in Word, I do sometimes use shorthand, but not all the time! I won’t even realise it until my friend tells me the next day, once I’ve printed it!
July 21, 2003 at 12:39 am #59199LittleBuddy99MemberI agree also. I usally dont use shorter words but i still do somtimes but writing reports I always make sure its right. Our schools keyboarding teacher says iming is good for improving and practicing skills.
July 21, 2003 at 2:03 pm #59194FaizanMemberI also agree. 🙂 I don’t use short terms anymore, but I used them when I was 12, you can actually find my old posts and compare the typing skills. I used to be a really dumb typer. But IM has increased my typing speed, when I started IM in 1997, I could hardly find any letter, I actually started with MSN, which was amazing, I was only 9 when I started using computers etc. When I was 13, I realised that saying “u” rather than “you” makes people think you’re dumb, even though you aren’t! So, in November 2002, I started typing properly, I got rid of the habbit of using “u”, “r”, “y”, “ur”, and believe me, it does make a lot of difference. When I now go and read my old posts, I really think I was dumb.
One more thing I don’t like about people is that when they write a big post or an email, they just write and write and write, never use paragraphs, which makes it really hard to read. Please.. if you’re one of the people who don’t use paragraphs, please try it. And see the difference.
Plus, there were 2 members here in 2001, those were two sisters, I wont mention their names but they were from Cornwall, UK, anyway.. they used to type like this:
“hello i am ***** ***** I live in cornwall my best friend is called ******** i also have a sister here at bbb we love it ere she as same way of typing we love confusing people and we hate people who correct our misakes like faizan who as no knowledge of what so aver”This is someone who used to be a member here but then she left, notice her posting style, you can hardly understand it, by the way, I made up the paragraph just to show you how they used to type like. They never knew what “has” means, she always used to say things like “my sister like bbb has well” and “my brother work in …. is name is …..” things like this really annoy me, I think people like them needs some kinda school.
July 21, 2003 at 8:34 pm #59197DavidParticipantHonestly, I don’t think it improves typing skills for myself. Think about it… Must of us talk to multiple people at the same time (That’s sorta the entire idea of IM…), so we have to change between windows. Not hard, but you need to take one hand off the keyboard to do it (It’s just easiest with the mouse, yeah, yeah, I know it can be done with key-commands, but most of us don’t know them). So this means that i have one hand on the mouse, and one on the keyboard most of the time. That means your not touch-typing, so it does not improve MY typing skills at least.
I still think IM is good (besides all the obvious things) it will improve computer literacy among students and further their knowledge in computer technology which will be required for the jobs of tomorrow.
BTW – Faizan, lmao! That’s has funny as ‘cindellapro‘!
July 21, 2003 at 8:44 pm #59193FaizanMemberHonestly, I only use my mouse when I visit BigBlueBall, otherwise, I just use Alt + Tab, which makes it much easier to switch between 10 windows. Atleast I find it much easier. And I think you will find it easier as well, try it and then tell me, which is better… “Mouse” or “Alt + Tab”? Mouse is just there for lazy Rats 🙂 Well, I would never prefer mouse.
Dave, yup, it’s always been funny but too hard to read. Believe me, it took me 20 minutes to type up the dumb paragraph:
Quote:quote:”hello i am ***** ***** I live in cornwall my best friend is called ******** i also have a sister here at bbb we love it ere she as same way of typing we love confusing people and we hate people who correct our misakes like faizan who as no knowledge of what so aver”Edit: Typo.
July 21, 2003 at 9:28 pm #59196DavidParticipantAlt + Tab is the keyboard command, however, I have a logetech (<- sp?) wireless mouse with a button on it that does the same as Alt + Tab, so I use that. You can call my lazy if you want, but it seems faster for me ;).
August 9, 2003 at 5:32 pm #59201Road_RunnerMemberHey, a mouse doesn’t make you lazy, but rather it is good for your hand moving skills (@$#$>??? what am I saying?). I must admit that I do use keyboard shortcuts occasionally, but not much considering I have a wireless keyboard from a few years ago with hotkeys like the Close button..goodbye Alt + F4!!
On the subject of IMing increasing your typing skills, I have to say that it does help you to type better and faster. Though I say “u, ur…” that really doesn’t have an impact on me when I type up reports or want to type properly to an adult on AIM. Just about all the words one types on his/her instant messenger are proper english, and therefore the more he/she types them the faster he/she gets at typing.
That’s the end of that! No disagreements!! (just kidding, fine disagree if you want to)**The big font was an accident. I edited this post.
August 9, 2003 at 6:13 pm #59200TigerbladeParticipantyeah i’d definitely agree its great for typing ability… granted i’m still not the fastest typer on planet earth, and yeah of course i still make mistakes once in a while. but before i started using AIM (and then later MSN), i was a realllllllllllllllllllly slow typer. i didnt get AIM til last year at the start of college *gasp* but since then i’ve noticed my speed has jumped quite a bit.
and yeah i hate it when people use really short abbreviations. i’ll admit, i use ‘k’ and ‘brb’ or ‘h/o’, and rarely use punctuation or capitalization in IMs, but when people abbreviate to the point that you need your secret decoder ring to figure out what they just said… thats ridiculous.
*ps to RoadRunner – please try a different font maybe… it hurts to read that!August 13, 2003 at 3:57 am #59195KPK102MemberYeah, AIM has helped my faster typing I mean I was always a good typer. I always type properly in my typing of e-mails, message board posts, and instant messanging. I think that I am getting better at typing things, but I still get there and their confused. I mean I use the mouse or I use Alt-tab it all depends on what type of mood I am in, and if I have alot of boxes open or not.
I am really good at typing something that is next to me without looking at it. At school I was writing these 3 paragraphs and when I was done all these other people will still on paragraph 1 or 2.
Anyway, IM is good for typing skills, but I want to have something to do with Computer Science, so I have been around the computer alot.
February 22, 2004 at 5:05 am #59204colinMemberWhat gets me mad is when people use words like “gurl” instead of “girl”. I mean, its the same number of letters so I guess everyone does it to be “cool” or something(dont ask me).
Also, someone recently used the expression “lylafklc”. I actually had to ask what it meant, haha, and this is what she told me. “Love you like a fat kid loves cake”. I mean, there is no reason for that stuff, its just stupid.
I do think that IM has improved my typing skills. Occansionaly on a paper or something I use “u” or other words like that, but i just hit the ‘ol delete button and type it right.February 22, 2004 at 5:30 am #59198Someguy03MemberWhen I say that it improves typing skills, I mean that it helps you learn where the keys are if you use it alot. Because of posting so much on BigBlueBall, and talking on AIM so much, I plan on finishing one of my school electives (typing) halfway through the first quarter, rather than taking an entire semester.
And ur[/b] rite[/b] colin, people do use it to b k[/b]ool. They think that bi[/b] spelling words wrong that they r[/b] somehow special.
February 22, 2004 at 9:13 pm #59192FaizanMemberI am considered to be the fastest typer in my school. Many people ask me to type up stuff for them, especially teachers who are so damn slow in typing, plus they can’t even operate a mouse. 🙁 I sometimes feel like giving them a free computer class, and a typing session after-school. 😀
February 23, 2004 at 4:49 am #59202plastidcellsMemberiming probably has improved my typing speed… just slowly and unnoticeably over a long period
however it might have made me make more spelling mistakes because when i’m IMing i don’t really care if my words or spelled incorrectly… by spelling mistakes i mean typos not words that i think are spelled correctly
i do use shorthand… (as you probably could already tell) and when i’m typing stuff up for school i think i subconsciously use shorthand but i catch myself right awaylast year we had to write a skit and the teacher told us that people made mistakes like typing “u” instead of “you”… when i heard that i thought i was one of them (but fortunatly iw asn’t) but jsut the fact that ppl did use “u” shows IMing’s effects on typing
i have no use of grammar whatsoever haha (not that i necessarily can’t use it correctly… just that i think typing so informally through IMs and whatnot has gotten me really lax)
May 12, 2004 at 3:01 am #59205SpikeMemberYeah, I think that it’s improved my typing skills a WHOLE lot, and its helped me a lot. I also realize how much faster I type, maybe its AOL, maybe its the HTML code, I dunno. And I wasn’t even a good typer before. I used to be at 15 wpm, I think…but since I’ve used AOL so much I took a free typing test and surprisingly, I was at 35WPM! 😎 And I don’t use any of that home row crap, I still hunt and peck (with all 10 fingers, not 2 like most people). I think I’m one of the few people who can hunt and peck 35wpm:D, and if you can, let me know, I congratulate you it’s tough.
