ParticipantI can’t connect to IRC servers/chat rooms anymore, whether it’s with mIRC, Hirc, HydraIRC, or web-based app. For example, when I try to connect to the BigBlueBall chatroom, it says Unable to connect: null.
What’s going on here?

KeymasterI just connected via the webchat option with no problems. Could you be having some kind of firewall issue that’s blocking the IRC port?

ParticipantThe only constraint for IRC is the allowance of an outbound TCP connection on port 6667.

Or if you are using a shell account.

MemberWhat firewall are you running? Zone Alarm perhaps?

If the server port number is non-default, then it is selected by the server administrator, not the client. Either way, a connection must be established from the client to the server on the remote port 6667 (or whatever it is for the server you are connecting to). And Dan isn’t using a shell account, so that doesn’t have anything to do with this.

I have irc’d for many years and been able to select different ports than the default and connected. And it was the client I did it with. I was merely suggesting he try other ports, as many times irc is ran from the ports 6665- 6669 If not more open ports. Limiting a firewall to one port isn’t the right way to check these things.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

ParticipantAlright, I am using Windows Firewall. On the exceptions list, I added port 6667 TCP. However, that didn’t seem to do anything. I’m probably doing something totally wrong here. What exactly should I do?

Oh, I’m sorry–I read what you were saying incorrectly, I stand corrected.

MemberAmy, Dave is half right and as are you.
In BigBlueBall IRC’s case, the only open public port is 6667. At least to my knowledge. Attempting to connect on other default ports 6668, 6669 etc. will not work. So in a way, you are both half right.
AwesomeSauce, try disabling Windows Firewall completely then connecting, does that work?

MemberThen that eliminates the firewall as a possible cause of the problem.
Do you have a router?
It would be easier if you gave us all your system specs and more information.
June 12, 2005 at 4:36 am #124017AwesomeSauce
ParticipantI’m on DSL with an Actiontec Router. That’s the only other information I can think of that would probably help.

Participanthow long have you had the router? were you able to connect to IRC with the router before, or did your problems start when you got the router…? you may want to check your router’s firewall settings…
