MemberHi All,
Recently I’ve been having problems with signing into Yahoo! Messenger. I think they changed the build, so I’m getting an “Incorrect ID or Password” error message. It was running perfect before. I changed nothing on my machine, and it is running the current updates. I’m also using Windows 2K Pro. It won’t even run on my laptop, which has XP Home on it. I’m using a router, as well.
I’ve contacted Yahoo!, but they are being slow and giving me the runaround. One thing that’s bothering my is: I’m on high speed cable, the connection preference has changed from High-Speed to Dial-up. I can’t access this to change it because I have to be logged on first, it seems.
I’ve called my service provider (Rogers) to ask if they have any clue, they suggested I try the forums. This is what led me to you. You have a great site, btw.
Thanks,

MemberHello Mike D and welcome, have you tried logging into your email? and if so are you having the same problem? If it is just messenger maybe a simple fix may check out and see if when you put your password or id in if by chance you hit the caps lock. I know sounds silly but I have done this myself and felt I was going to have a meltdown in my mind until I found out that is what happened.

MemberThanks Will,
Yes, I’ve tried all that. I have no problem with my e-mail or MY Yahoo!
I have changed my password and even got a new ID. Still nothing. Caps are off.
I even did the un-install/re-install thing several times. I also tried the 7.5 Beta from the U.S.: Still nothing.

MemberCould be a cookie problem go to the url below and follow the instructions
http://login.yahoo.com
After successfully signing in to your account, try Yahoo! Messenger again. You should be all set.To clear your cookies go to your browser and click on tools and choose internet options, under the general tab go to temp. internet files and choose delete cookies. make sure you click ok before exiting.

MemberThanks Will and Hatedjealousy,
I reviewed all of the suggestions and the links, performed a complete clean un-install (including my registry), signed back into Yahoo! and downloaded the Messenger.
NOTHING!
I think it still has to do with the “Dial-up” connection preference that I can’t change. Before all this, it was successfully set up for High-Speed.
I think I’m at the mercy of Yahoo!….Boo-Hoo. 🙁

MemberSorry I couldnt be more help. I thought I would try and get mine to do what yours is doing so I changed my high speed peference to dial-up but mine still came up. the only other thing I can think of is that yahoo has a temp. ban on your account which usually takes about 72 hours before they will allow access if someone has complained or your violated the TOS agreement. but anyway I hope that if and when you do get it working that you will come back and let us know what the problem was and what you had to do to fix it as it would be great information we all could learn from.

ParticipantMiked, doe’s your id work in the yahoo web page login’s?
Can you access chat via Java chat or Chat2 DHTML via the http://chat.yahoo.com webpage?
If you are also unable to acess these chat alternative’s i would think two things..
1. Your id was stolen or you are not putting in right password
2. Yahoo! has banned your id or it Was deactivated maliciously or officially.

MemberHey Dermot
Yes, I can access everything else yahoo! I don’t go into chat rooms, so I never tried that before, so when I tried after your suggestion, it does work no problem.
I know it’s not my firewall, I’ve turned that off to try it. My anti-virus is up to date as well.
Thanks Hatedjealousy for the link, I have read it and understand it….sorta. If I am blocked, I don’t understand why. I only have one person on it that I chat with. 😀 And we’re clean.
My Messenger worked fine on my desktop while my laptop gave me the problem. Then one day, it stopped working on my desktop as well.

An hour after I posted the original post, I downloaded Trillian to see what would happen. I can’t log on to Yahoo. But MSN is running perfect. I get a failed connection that reads: “Error:Invalid user account. Make sure you’ve typed your user name correctly and try again.”
I must be blocked for some reason that they are not telling me.
All my responses from them are just your typical connection issues. A different person answering my e-mails each time with different reference numbers. They are not helping one bit. I don’t even think they care. As a matter of fact, I know they don’t care.

ParticipantSounds like you were the victim of a accidental Yahoo! Ban
so you can get into chat?

MemberYes, Dermot, I did get into chat. I didn’t stay though. I don’t go into those places.
Thanks.

MemberI e-mailed Yahoo! and asked if I was banned. They asked me where I got my information. Then said:
“Well, that did not come from yahoo, so I do not know where you would get that idea that you would be banned.”
They also sent me something else to try:
1) Close Messenger completely.
2) Visit this URL:http://public.yahoo.com/~chen/test/enablelog.reg
3) Download and save file to desktop.
4) Double-click the file to enable detailed logging. (This will not resolve the connection issue.)
5) Try to sign in with Messenger or duplicate the issue you are experiencing. (Please do this a few times.)
6) Open My Computer from the desktop.
7) Go to the “C:Program FilesYahoo!Messenger” folder. (This is the default directory in which you installed Messenger.
8) Look for a LOG file called “ypager.log” in this directory.
9) After you’ve located the “ypager.log” file in the Messenger directory, copy and paste the last 50 lines of the file into an e-mail and send it to us. (Yahoo! Customer Care.)So, I followed the instructions just as was instructed, the “ypager.log” file was a text document from Notepad. I copied the last lines and e-mailed them back to Yahoo! Customer Care.
When I get a response back, I will promptly inform you all.
Thanks for your help.
