What happened was, a friend sent me a link (Maybe it was an messenger worm, I dont think he personally did it) and I clicked it…and I was busy doing things at the time. It was this page that had a log in that looked exactly like a Yahoo logged in…and without thinking (you know, automatic)…I logged in…then 5 min later *poof* And I dont know the answer to my secret question because I did it oodles of years ago.
Now I heard from a friend he has the link messaged to him from me…so Hmmm.
A) How do I get rid of this virus or whatever?
B) Is there any hope of getting my email back when I dont know the answer to my secret question (maybe it will help that I sent them the offending link??)Thanks
January 17, 2005 at 8:37 pm #112188neo_ny_23Memberfor ur question A>> Get an antivirus probably Norton AV 2005 or something realy good and do a complete thorough scan. My personal experience says that Webroot SpySweeper is more or less as effective as Norton AV 2005. So, if u want, u can use that
B>>> I don’t know if ur id was just hacked/or u just cant access ur email. So lets see if u can access ur email account after the virus scan and if u face the same problem then probably ur id is hacked. One thing u might try if u have any alternate email account associated with ur id. if u hv and if u remember it, then good luck. And if u dont hv, then i guess, its good to forget that id and create another and also making sure that ur computer properly secured such that this thing never happens again.
EDIT: The whole process which happened with you is called as Phising ( if am not wrong ).

Thats why you can’t get into your account. As far as getting it back… do you remember the rest of the details you used at sign-up?

Getting it back…I have one of the stupidest security questions ever written (back, I guess when you could write your own) : “Who is your favorite net guy?” Realllllllly smart. I did this years ago, and I have ideas of who it could be….but no luck so far. I dont even know what year I made that question, which would be an infinite help. And they said something about an alternate address but its to an account Im sure I no longer have. I think Im screwed. I wish they would let me fax my drivers license or what have you cuz I think that proves more than some security question.
January 18, 2005 at 10:17 pm #112185OreoMemberOK….I did this with ICQ once. What you have to do, (as painful and disgusting as it might be) is figure out what you were doing in your life at that time and figure out what guy your were totally mad for…then change that question and NEVER look back again. I think you have to bother them for a while before they let you do the driver’s license thing. Good luck….and if you can’t remember….talk to some friends you had back then…THEY might remember. If you are like many of the rest of us girls…you probably talked non-stop about him at some point. 😀
January 19, 2005 at 1:04 am #112196princessvessnaMemberYeah thats what Ive been trying to do…I thought I had it somewhat narrowed down….I didnt have the nickname I used for the ID until 1998, and I know for sure I had the ID by March 2000 because I joined a Yahoo Group then. I thought the “net guy”, using those constraints, would be my ex-fiance…but so far, no luck with his name. Unless they had me make a security question at a later time? (I read that accounts created before 8/98 didnt have security questions)
I callede Yahoo again and they said they cant help me unless i answer the question or provide my alternate email address…Ive been online since ’94 and I have a zillion emails, a lot I have forgotten.
Sigh. Thanks for all your help.

Soooo….now I have this email, presumaby from the hacker dude. Can I report it? I should have taken a screen shot of my info page showing it there, but I was so excited to get it back and I changed it back to my own email.
January 20, 2005 at 3:20 am #112187OreoMemberI would MOST DEFINITELY report to Yahoo!. Though who knows what might happen, they may do nothing and/or this e-mail could be one of MANY. But, if you know the e-mail SEND it to Yahoo! so if some one astute happens to read your e-mail and what happened to you (perhaps even the people you dealt with when you couldn’t get it back? If you have their names, etc…, write THOSE people who already know your situation). If nothing else you tried, in the best case they have the B….um…I mean “mean man”‘s e-mail on file in case some one can/is willing to do something. 🙂
January 21, 2005 at 6:01 am #112199lllxx_Grewal_xxlllMemberActually That was a yahoo ban 😛 ..enjoy da life

Is there a phone number I can call at Yahoo to get this problem fixed? I think the hacker changed all my information because when I tried inputting my birthday, postal code, country and alternate email I kept getting a red message from yahoo saying something along the lines that it wasn’t working. I’ve tried all kinds of information for that page until it said account was temporarily disabled for protection. I’ve got lots of job prospectives emailing me at that account, passwords, time sensitive material and other sorts of very important emails. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
