MSN WebMessenger is neat, much better than other web-based chat clients including AOL’s.
Now I wonder if this will work on PDAs.
August 6, 2004 at 3:57 pm #74912matthewMemberThank god for this, all messengers have been taken off my computer from my dad so this is a life saver thanks graham.

If you send an instant message from Web Messenger to a Trillian user, they will never receive your message. I haven’t tested with other third-party messengers. The unfortunate thing is that there is no error message or indication that the message did not go through.
I’ll check with Cerulean Studios to see if they are aware of the issue.

That’s not the point of web messengers. The point is that sometimes you simply don’t have permission to download or install programs on a computer, or might not want to because the computer isn’t yours.
August 8, 2004 at 11:55 am #74918BuddyPlayMemberyou got a point but if its a daily computer.. there is no point of going to the site all the time and then finding the link to it but if its a one time use thing you are right.. sort of like aim express
August 8, 2004 at 12:23 pm #74913matthewMemberSome public places dont allow you to download the full package of MSN messenger. Thats why web messenger has been released.

Just be sure they don’t know about it 😉
August 9, 2004 at 12:09 pm #74914matthewMemberDoes it run from the MSN messenger ports? It doesen’t does it because it is ran from http maybe I can use it in school then.
August 11, 2004 at 12:44 pm #74910dmeMemberThe whole idea of being web based is to work around restrictions in a clean manner. It works in two ways:
1.) Not needing to download and install and software (Computers are installed with an internet browser by default)
2.) Working over the MSNP10 over HTTP protocol, rather than only the MSNP10 protocol alone (In the same way that TCP works over IP). ie. Using the standard ports. Port 80 is the default HTTP port, and in general, never blocked. There are many cases in which the default MSN Messenger ports (if I remember well offhand these are mainly ports 1863, 6891 – 6900, as well as some others) are blocked, specifically to deny IM access.
You should be able to use web messengers from school or wherever has an internet connection and an installed browser.

This does not run on all operating systems.
August 22, 2004 at 4:50 am #74899detn8rParticipantAre you saying this from personal experience, or going by what the site says?
August 23, 2004 at 8:32 pm #74909Mr.Curlynose1MemberBoth. It won’t let me launch it when I visit the site in Apple Safari. If I make it so that Safari identifies itself as IE6 for Windows, it’ll launch, but the field to send messages will be grayed out so that you can’t use it. I’ll try it with other browsers.
(EDIT)
I couldn’t get it to launch at all in Firefox.
It’ll launch in the gayness that is IE for Mac and Opera, and the text window works. I couldn’t get any people to respond though, so the messages may not be going through. -
