MemberHey there
I have some trouble with my msn. Actually, it’s not just with msn, the problem persists also with iexplorer.exe and even sometimes with wmplayer.exe.
As stated in the headline, MsnMsgr.exe uses all my cpu resources whenever I try to log on. This goes for all the apps mentioned – whenever they go online, all my cpu resources are spent on that particular program.
I have tried several things. I have thoroughly searched for and destroyed any spyware, virus, trojan and so on, so that’s not the problem. Furthermore, I have just made a repair of Windows using the folder i386 on the C-drive (btw, I use Windows Home), but as you can guess, that didn’t help either.
If you have ANY idea of what to do, please let me know (anything else but a complete reinstall – please! :-/ )

MemberDo you know when this problem started? Did you install any new programs during that time, or just before this started?
You can always try to do a System Restore a date when everything worked fine and see if that fixes it.

MemberI know it’s hard to believe, but it just started – I didn’t do anything in particular, as far as I recall. …and I’m afraid it’s too late for a system restore – it’s 3-4 weeks ago…

Welcome to BBB. If this problem is happening to all your programs, a possible (and notice I said possible) cause is defective RAM. How much RAM do you have? How long have you had the problem?
February 2, 2007 at 7:40 pm #157656xavis
MemberFirst of all: Yes, I have tried uninstalling msn and IE and installing the latest versions.
Secondly: Hm, well, it’s not ALL my apps that have problems on the net. Firefox e.g. is running smoothly, but it seems as though that whenever some of MS’ apps want to connect to the internet, the problem occurs. I have 1gb RAM and as I said earlier, the problem has been there for 3-4 weeks – I think it’s since 10 January, or perhaps a few days earlier…not quite sure.
I really hope you can help me, guys – I have tried all kinds of things suggested in a couple of very competent Danish forums, but no luck! 🙁

ModeratorWhat firewall are you using? Have you tried disabling it?
February 3, 2007 at 11:47 am #157657xavis
MemberI am using Zonelabs ZoneAlarm, and I haven’t had any problems with either iexplorer.exe or MsnMsgr.exe before…so no, I haven’t tried disabling it…

Version 6.xxx of Zone Alarm had thousands of problems; don’t know whether the new version 7 is better or not. This is a long shot but you can try these two things:
1) Disable Zone Alarm from starting up. Reboot. Check Task Manager.
2) If number 1 doesn’t work, uninstall ZA. Then reboot.February 3, 2007 at 3:28 pm #157652MattB
MemberCorrect, ZA has quite a few issues (particularly w/ Messenger), so try what Philip said.

MemberWhen was the last time you ran a Spyware/adware/virus check?
Edit:
ok, I see it now… I guess I should learn to read better :pFebruary 5, 2007 at 3:34 am #157658xavis
MemberVery recently. As I wrote in my first post, I have checked my puter thoroughly for virus/spyware/trojans because of this, but without any luck.

Have you tried disabling or uninstalling Zone Alarm? What version of ZA are you using?

Membercuriously my problem hyperthetically started at the same time and the exact same problem. i cannont be sure of the date because my internet has been cut off since december-feb however between these times absolutely nothing has changed on my computer to msn or any msn related programs only games have been played and this problem never occured before december.
i only have windows firewall and it is off, i have no other antivirus programs or anything running . i weekly run 3 virus and spyware adware removing programs so no problem there. also my ram cannot be defective because it runs titan quest and age of empires 3 which require its use alot.
as far as im aware no updates have been given for either msn, windows update or internet explorer updates. also my auto updates are turned off.
additionally i have many times reinstalled msn live messanger many times under different setting and nothing works. also because this problem is not specific to msn live and also affects media player/hotmail i do not see the problem.
on a final note the extremely old windows messanger, not msn messanger works fine besides signing into hotmail but the messanger works, it seems not to use the same exe files or something, not very knowledgable on this but thts a guess.
on task manager these files are occupying aloit of system resources:
-“msnmsgr.exe”
-“windowstaskmanager.exe”
-“iexplorer.exe”
-“explorer.exe”
-“systemidleprocess” however this is normally occupying alot but not interfering with any running speeds at all.only things i have updated since this problem is nvidia video driver update/various game patches/installed-uninstalled msn messanger/ perhaps most noticably changed isp from ntl to bt tho thts just supplying internet so shouldnt have an effect on settings tho it worked perfectly fine back on ntl.

Hi, and welcome to the BBB forums. Try upgrading to the latest version of Adobe Flash Player, which can be found here: Macromedia Deutschland – Shockwave Player Download-Center Hopefully this will solve the problem of WLM grabbing excessive system resources.
