Jeff Hester
KeymasterTeam Leaders,
I wanted to let you know that Williamlee inquired about what’s required to become a staff member. I told him there were no specific rules, but that we look for people who are smart, have a sense of humor, good communicators and a passion for whatever their forum is. I also told him that as far as I knew, the Team Leaders weren’t currently looking to add any staff, but that I’d post a message in the Staff Room and let them know of his interest.
He’s been one of our most active new members, but he doesn’t know what forum he would even be well-suited to help in. Sometimes I get the feeling that he tries just a little bit too hard, but it could just be me.

ParticipantMy opinion on Wiliamlee:
I get that feeling too sometimes. He really loves being around here, he is quite addicted with bigblueball from what he’s told me. He’s trying to be active in as many forums as possible and help in whatever way he can. But It’s indeed hard to tell where he would suit more, he posts EVERYWHERE.I’m pretty much active as well so I take a look at his posts often, if you asked me I’d say Communication Center seems to fit him more. I’ve seen him helping out in msn but it’s mostly assumptions he makes and many times collects the help from the Msn Support and so on. Not that it’s bad, but I think his style fits more the Communication Center.

as for williamlee… i dunno. i really don’t know what to make of him just yet. he seems very willing to help, and like you said he’s active all over the place. occasionally it seems like his posts in the introduction section are a bit cut-n-pasted, but then again who knows. i think eventually he might make a good staffer, he just needs to get settled in and see where he might fit well.

MemberI have to say – although I like William a whole lot (I’ve actually VOICED with him a few times now) – I’m almost embarrassed to see some suggestions he gives people (in YM section).
He simply doesn’t know enough to know what he doesn’t know, and I feel some newcomers may be surprised at some of his quite off-beam answers – though I think he will learn, in time.(I gave him a gentle rebuke the other day, which he “took” extemely well, I must say 🙂 )

MemberLike you have all said he seems to have swamped the forum. I find that a bit odd really, just makes me feel uneasy. Don’t ask me why, as I have no idea because he comes across as very pleasant.
Some of his advise is very hit and miss regarding IM problems but saying that I am no expert in your areas, but I am sure you all check if his replies are valid.
I think we should say a polite thanks and just leave it for a while and see how he goes.

MemberI think its for team leaders to decide if they want someone in their team or not however I do think its too early to do that.
He is too excited now and probably needs some time to settle down.

MemberWhat about for Alternative Chat? There is no team leader 😉
I actually think he’s somewhat helpful in the Comuter Support section. He’s had good suggestions that I wouldn’t have thought of, so maybe that’s a possibility, too, although on the other hand, we don’t want too many staff members in any one section.

ParticipantTigerblade wrote:just to clarify, do you mean the Community Center?Oops yeah, this is what happens when you’re addicted to Doom 3 :p [Communication Center]
And that’s true about the cut-n-pasted posts in the Intro area, it’s kind of tiring to see “here at the BBB we are all about IM tips and tricks and fixes” 10-20 times a day heh

MemberI’m embarrased to say this, but I have to agree with Sarah:o . I’m not sure why I feel uneasy about him…I just do. He seems like a great person with wonderful ideas and an excitement that I love to see around the forum. I think we should let him settle down. Ya know it’s that new toy feeling about BBB:woot: . Another thing, I don’t think it’s fair at this point to automatically give him staff rights when I’m sure there are others that have been here longer and would love to have some type of team membership. Of course this isn’t my call, but that’s how I feel.

ParticipantQuote:…Another thing, I don’t think it’s fair at this point to automatically give him staff rights when I’m sure there are others that have been here longer and would love to have some type of team membership. Of course this isn’t my call, but that’s how I feel. It’s not automatically giving him staff rights… And Jeff himself has put up that if people might like to part of the staff they should ask:
Quote:Do you have a passion for instant messaging? If you’re interested in joining the BigBlueBall team, contact a Team Leader.Quote:As you might notice, there are openings for Mentors in several sections. If you’re interested in helping, contact a team leader for more information. So i see nothing wrong with him asking nor it seeming like he is going to be given “rights” automatically over others. Yes people are promoted without asking first but it’s okay for someone to inquire too because they are allowed to.
Quote:however I do think its too early to do thatAlso it’s not about it being too early because, I joined BBB on January 2005 (didn’t become active until March 2005) and i was asked to join staff May 2005. (That was only 2 months of being active because my first post was in March).
Yes everyone is different, but i started off very active as well, i’m still pretty active, but not as much. I would also always introduce people with the same lines, and other members do that as well (even staff). So that shouldn’t be held against him.
As a final note, to me he would best be suited in the CC area but i think that area has enough staff, so he should either be asked to join until there is an opening, or if a team leader thinks he is doing a good job in their section and should be given a mentor chance. But this is just my two cents.

Participant*raises her hand a little* I like him…he’s nice and all…but like everyone else has been saying, he gives me the willies kinda. He is very … … excited about just about everything and has -swamped- the boards. Not a bad thing, and I appreciate his help in the intro section, but yeah I can only see the same rehashed long paragraph over and over again so many times. Though, you’re right, Van, people do CP intros which gets on even my nerves sometimes, but it almost feels like he’s trying to push himself into a staff position just to prove a point before he’s even given the option. I guess the whole concept of ‘dress for success’ can work here, but…I don’t quite know, there’s something a bit -half step to the left- in my opinion.
I get the feeling that he may burn out sooner or later, and we should probably just wait for that. Start in really strong and then eventually dwindle to nothing, like a new toy (great comparison whoever had that).
…he makes me… on edge. Something about his demeanor. I don’t know what it is, and it’s not threatening per say, but just…kinda…transparentish? I dunno. I kinda just get the vibe that he kinda gathers up all the responsibility/recognition he can for really whatever reason. I think he means well, I’m sure of it, but it’s just a bit odd to me having someone so new coming in and so soon trying to push and push and prove that we need them as staff, which is kinda what it feels like. Like that weird over achiever kissup guy at work or school *chuckles* Not saying he’s a kissup, but that’s what it reminds me of.
I will admit it seems like he fits in the CC the best, especially if people are kinda blushing over the information he gives out in the other forums, but we’re kinda… good. *chuckles* The CC isn’t that demanding and we have -plenty- of people to sort out the intro moved posts, which is really all we need to do as staff around there and watch for spam. I appreciate the help, but really, we’re pretty situated for staff, in my opinion, though that’s just my opinion. *looks at Elisa, smiles pretty*
If someone wants to take him on, go for it, personally I think that he’s best as just a member, but if someone wants to take that and run with it and give him a mentor spot kinda as a trial run or whatever… *shrug* So be it? I dunno. Personally I’d rather him jsut stay a member until more people feel comfortable with him since it seems from what most people say here that he makes folks feel a little peculiar *shrugs again*

ParticipantWhat can I say? He creeps me out. You guys have said a lot, swamped the fourms, etc. Have you read his blog? It’s like talking about sucked into Hell and stuff…literally evil. Here is a link to that post (most recent as of this reply) http://blogbud.com/cgi-bin/index.pl?poemnumber=379069&sitename=williamlee&password=310331u7lz.oPslGw.3103&poemoffset=0&displaypoem=t&item=blog
He came on way too strong, and tried to make way too many friends too quickly. Every now and then, he will post something that just gives me that “uh-oh” feeling they warned me about in my self defense class. My brother read this post by Williamlee:williamlee wrote:Thanks Fancy, now how could I resist trying the fish tank. thanks again.
***biggggggg Huggggggggggggggs***(https://bigblueball.com/forums/yahoo-messenger-support/34941-doesnt-hurt-ask.html) And he just made a gruesome face…What guy says the big hugs thing? Just odd.    😮

Participantheh, ok… so without bashing the poor guy anymore…
we all basically agree that he’s very enthusiastic and willing to help out, but isn’t always doing so in ways we’d prefer. so… we wait it out. let him get settled in, let him figure out where he really fits well, let him figure out how things are. then if he’s still interested in being a staffer and there’s an opening of some sort, give him a trial run.

ParticipantI guess I am going to have to agree with the masses here. He seems to much like a new person just trying to immediately progress to what usually takes a long time, he is rushing trying to get here. To me some of his posts seem just annoying, he has a lot of “pointless” posts, ones just being like “I had this problem to” “Glad you got it fixed”, etcetera.
I may be staff, but I am certainley the lowest part of the staff, so I doubt I will have much say in what happens but my vote goes to “no”, I agree with Sami, he seems like he will burn out, if he keeps this posting frenzy up for awhile, maybe, but again with Sami, I can only take so much fake sympathy and cheeriness so much.
/Edit, something I noticed, Jeff originally addressed to the “Team Leaders”, not one of the “Team Leaders” have posted.

ParticipantTigerblade wrote:then if he’s still interested in being a staffer and there’s an opening of some sort, give him a trial run.And if he wasn’t good we just get him on then kick him off? Bah, like others have said wait it out…I still don’t think he’s quite right. Like Jeff or someone said, maybe he will just burn out. Remember Fancy? Oh, the guys loved her didn’t they! (including me…yeah I am guilty) but then she gets MOTM and do we hear from her again? NOPE. And what about Tea Granny? She dissappeared too. Tea Granny was odd to me as well…just saying…let the spark burn out.
EDIT:: I guess I didn’t see..but Tea Granny is back…so before I get yelled at for that 😛 just saying I didn’t see her post.
