As I mentioned in a previous post in this section, I’ve noticed patndoris (aka Doris) to be answering many questions especially in the MSN section with excellent advice. She actually uses YIM as her primary, so knows quite a bit about that, too. Last night she spent at least two hours with me getting my voice stuff to work since I have recently installed Vista and needed to tweak some settings to get it fully functional. Her diagnostics, processing, and enthusiasm impressed the hell outta me. She has had lots of personal experience trouble shooting many issues and can explain the fixes in ways that even a newb like me can understand. I know I was frustrating her at some points because I just don’t get the computer-stuff sometimes, but she was so patient and so kind, and truly thrilled when it all worked.
I’ve noticed that some staff has moved on to other adventures, or at least aren’t as active here as they used to be. And that’s fine! Even tho BBB isn’t as active as it had been, we still have quite a few people coming here for advice and solutions and I think it would behoove us to have an enthusiastic expert.
Any comments on this?
August 12, 2007 at 7:27 am #163360PhilipModeratorYeah, I agree with Heather. Doris does seem to be very helpful and resourceful. Perhaps the rest of the BBB staff and administrators should decide whether she could join us?
August 13, 2007 at 12:38 am #163349MrOatsMemberI think it’s a good idea to consider this person to be a staffer.
It looks like this person has the potential to be on staff, according to what Sarah (Heather ;)) and Philip have said about them and from looking at their posts myself.

*shyly raises hand* 😮 And no i haven’t moved on to other adventures! I’ve just been extremely busy with work, then busy with this lil thing we like to call life and family problems. Plus the fact that i’m still mouseless doesn’t help 😡 I try to check in here every chance i get, even if i don’t post anything. Then if something bigs comes up i post. Anyways, where i’m trying to get at is not to make excuses, but to volunteer to be removed off staff for being too inactive. Since BBB is inactive itself, it doesn’t help to have inactive staff as well. It should have staff ready to answere questions and staff that is ready to spark up topics to get people posting. I love being part of this staff and would love to remain a part of it, but i don’t feel i’m being of much help, sorry. 🙁
I do hope BBB can thrive once again and be as active as it once was though. And if i can be of some help whatsoever, don’t hesistate to ask because i’ll try to do what i can! 🙂
And i know this topic isn’t the right place to say this, but since the subject came up, it felt right to…..
OH and to add to the topic at hand, i was also trying to state that adding new active staff is a great idea. *+rep to Heather for suggesting*
August 20, 2007 at 1:33 pm #163352PolarBearNPRParticipantBump . . . I know you technical guys are all about the reputation issue, but what about this advisor-to-the-members issue? Seems a good time to discuss, or perhaps even act *gasp* If we strike while she’s on a roll – and even asking (#7) about staff status . . . would be a good thing (in my never to be humble opinion).
School’s starting, staff folks will be busier, any comments?
*and Nessa – you still owe me rep 😉 *
August 20, 2007 at 3:08 pm #163330Jeff HesterKeymasterI’m all for it. Spike, detn8r, David?

August 20, 2007 at 5:04 pm #163336DavidParticipantShe’s good, I like her. I’m just worried about pulling everyone that’s any good onto staff too quickly..
August 20, 2007 at 5:30 pm #163353PolarBearNPRParticipantToo soon? She’s been here since 11/2006.
I was “staffed” with less time as a member of BBB; and certainly with less experience than she has.

Too quickly is not too soon. Look around, anyone helpful is already on staff, this is why there are fewer people trying hard to move up in the ranks and join the staff.
Back when we only had 6 or 7 people on staff, there were others that would post and stick around because they wanted to be part of that group.
Anyone helpful for a month shouldn’t just be put onto staff, ideally it should take more than that, but currently we have a big problem with activity and member/staff retention.

A month? She’s been helping out since she joined! For example, in December and lots more since then! Check her posts. Always thorough; always instructive; always precise, even when she has troubles. I didn’t just pick her out of the air . . . I noticed consistent, willing, helpfulness over time . . . significant time in BBB terms.
And staff activity and member/staff retention isn’t a “big problem,” it’s the way it goes with this type of forum. Members have their problems solved, and staff (and others) move on because the problems get monotonous and much of the staff has “grown up” and moved on to more intense computer applications. Others have just moved on to other things in real life. It’s hard to spend significant amounts of time here when working, going to school, and dealing with the stuff of life.
And as we’ve mentioned, the realm of IM isn’t generating quite the troubles it once was so BBB isn’t as active. But the troubles with some other things (Vista) seem to be bringing issues up again – and it’s good to have a place and people here to answer those burning questions. And patndoris is one of those people.
August 20, 2007 at 7:54 pm #163338DavidParticipantI didn’t say I was against here, I was just pointing it out.
I’m for adding her, but I also think we should remove others.

And some folks have asked to be removed, or go on sabbatical or whatever, but that’s another issue. Looks like we’ve got two “yes” votes from the administrative team. . . Spike? Graham? Got an opinion? One more, and the motion will carry.
