I agree with Dave’s points, pretty much what he said is what I’m also thinking. If we remove other staff members, I’m all for adding Doris, she seems like a really nice/helpful person.

Or is she coming back? Did we ever get that figured out?

Someone needs to fix the roster – take off those that want off, and leave the rest and invite Doris into the midst of chaos.
Let’s get this done before the weekend, shall we?

I have no idea. She’s off staff and out of staff groups, but she still shows there, just like Someguy03 did after he left, it’s like the last person to leave gets stuck on that page. It’s a non-issue though for the most part, as only staff can see it, and she doesn’t have any staff rights.

August 23, 2007 at 9:14 am #163362PhilipModeratorAside from Doris, I can’t think of any other non-staff member who has been as helpful as she has. Bringing her into our fold surely would be a good thing, wouldn’t it? I remember how proud and honoured I felt when EvilSeph PMed me last year, asking me whether I would like the position of mentor in BBB. So let’s quit fidgeting, just go ahead and ask her.
August 23, 2007 at 8:54 pm #163342SpikeMemberPoll option should include “Yes, but remove older staff, too”, because that’s how I feel.
August 23, 2007 at 9:39 pm #163358PolarBearNPRParticipantSpike – ffs! You’re an administrator – get them off if they’ve asked to be removed. If they’re not active – contact them and see if they wanna be removed . . . what’s the big deal here? I feel like I’m dealing with congress.
BTW, the decision has already been made!!! See my post #18.
August 23, 2007 at 11:12 pm #163348NessaParticipantJust had to add in: Why would you give the option No Opinion? If a staff member doesn’t have an opinion on this, it’d be really odd because as a staff member you should participate in these type of decisions and be interested in getting BBB active again.
This is just my opinion, which i had to state because i found the fact that it had to be offered as an option seemed weird…..
August 23, 2007 at 11:47 pm #163334detn8rParticipantOh I have an opinion — does anyone actually know Doris on any personal note, other than being helped via IM?
I don’t believe the time is needed for another member of staff. The forums are run fine in the respect of moderating.
As I see it, the only reason other staff on this board wish to see Doris here, is for her to have recognition for her contribution.
I love the fact that Doris knows what they are talking about, I just don’t think it means they need to be a staff for recognition.

You mean like I did, then got bitched at for?

Actually, maybe with the proposed changes here, there could be some sort of staff standards (other forums have ’em). Guidelines like: a certain number of posts per month – whether answers to questions or off topic or staff room silliness – and if you don’t meet that in two months, you’re dropped from staff . . . unless you let us (someone specific) know that you’ll be afk for a period. Of course this needs to be communicated to the staff.
Again, “real” life comes up and requires us to attend to it so there will be periods of low participation. School starts up on Tuesday so I won’t be as available as I am now – and I’m sure that applies to others here as well. Guidelines will help ensure that the people here want to be active staff members; not just have the badge and privileges.
And I don’t know Doris in real life, but I’ve played many games with her and Ian and others awhile back (before WoW), and have had several excellent conversations with her apart from the “fix” for my Vista issues. She’s a mature, dedicated, enthusiastic, helpful, knowledgeable, available and willing member who would benefit from the support and guidance of the rest of the staff here; as she would benefit BBB.
August 24, 2007 at 6:13 pm #163332Jeff HesterKeymasterI will invite her to join the staff. Graham, your point about not needed additional moderation is true, but what we do need is enthusiasm and a desire to help answer questions. There are still a ton of posts with no replies.
Here is the message I’ll send:
Hello Doris,
At BigBlueBall, we’re always looking for smart, helpful and fun people to join our team. Several of our current staff members suggested that you would make an excellent addition to the team, and I’d like to invite you to join us.
As a staff member, you’ll have special privileges and responsibilities that allow you to move, edit and even delete topics within the forums. You’ll be working with our Administrators and other staffers to help keep the forums running smoothly. Each staff member gets a special “Staff” badge that appears next to your name in your posts, and special access to the “staff only” forum. Here you can discuss ideas for improving BigBlueBall, or ask questions on how to help the forums grow. You’ll also get your own @bigblueball.com email account, powered by Gmail (it also works with Google Talk).
What’s expected of staff members? Besides what I’ve already described, we’re only asking for a 3-month commitment. After that time, we’ll reassess how things are working. If you are happy and we’re happy, we’ll keep it going. If not; no hard feelings. As an staff member, I expect you to visit the site regularly, although I realize that no one can visit every day. I suggest you subscribe to the forums that you have the most interest in with a
“Daily Digest” notification so you’ll get email notification when new posts are made. You’ll also need to provide a way for other staff members to contact you, preferably via Private Message or IM.
I respect your contributions to the forums, and hope you’ll agree to join the team. Please email me with your decision, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Jeff Hester

Hello Jeff!
I was quite pleased to receive your email invitation. I would be honored to join the BigBlueBall team! The 3-month commitment is no problem for me, and I hope it will extend for a long time beyond as well. As I’m a bit OCD (LOL!) I’m likely to be on more than once in a typical day.
Here are the numerous ways to contact me:
PRIMARY EMAIL: [email protected]
SECONDARY EMAIL: [email protected] (which forwards, as some ppl can’t send to AOL direct)WLM: [email protected] (I’m on here virtually 24/7 but for personal reasons I block contacts during certain periods….which means no offlines. Until WLM comes up with better stealth settings YH is preferred but I’ve no objection to WLM & I always explain to new contacts about the offline issue.)
YH: patndoris (Preferred IM – as I’m usually on every evening and all weekend)
For TROUBLESHOOTING only (& FYI) I have Skype, PalTalk, & AOL (but I’m only on them if necessary.)
As an aside, I’ve recently started my own webpage http://www.patndoris.com (covering a variety of topics) & I feature BigBlueBall as one of my most highly recommended links. Hope that’s OK!
I’ll look forward to hearing more details from you as you have time and have a great weekend!!
Regards,
DorisDave/Spike/detn8r: Could one of you go ahead and promote Doris, granting the appropriate permissions? Once that’s done, please send her a PM to let her know, then start a “welcome” message in the Site News forum.
August 24, 2007 at 9:43 pm #163343SpikeMemberDone, done, and done. 🙂
