MemberWhat do you think needs to be done, 2 members have already openly complained that he has too many (and too high of) high scores, and it’s no longer fun for people to compete for first place.
Personally, I wouldn’t doubt the fact that he’s cheating, simply because I understand the technology and how easy it is to do if you understand it. But I’m not going to point fingers because I obviously can’t prove that. (I am, however, entitled to my own thoughts thank you very much :D)
What do you think we should do about this sice two of our members have openly expresssed concern?

MemberReset the scores. It’s about time anyway.
Then watch him.

ParticipantDisable his access to the arcade for 1 month. If he does it again–disable it indefinitely.

ParticipantI gave up on the ‘contest’ we were having because of him — and I still don’t like the fact that he only comes here to play games. I told him if he wanted to be part of the contest, you must be part of the community, and therefore I set a post count of a minimum of 40. He exceeded that and them some talking back and forth with Leapy Leo about the arcade. EVERY post about it has his name all over it. I’m sick of it. You cut him from the arcade, he has no reason to be at BBB.

KeymasterI have added a small fix that may help with some of the cheating, disabling the “extra” Flash options when you right-click a game (options like “pause, rewind, play”).
I suggest we reset the scores, watch him, and if he pulls the same crap again, we ban him from the arcade.

MemberI will reset the scores tonight before I go to bed at about 11PM Central, so if anybody needs to save the scores or what have you, you’d best do it now. 😉

ParticipantAnyone know how to cheat? how about we out-cheat him until the score is so ridiculously high that it couldn’t possibly be real?
May 25, 2007 at 3:35 am #161606Spike
MemberThere is one of two ways as far as I know for the end user to actually “cheat”:
– Edit your system RAM to change the score (not recommended method, i’ve tried, it’s hard).
– Sniff your traffic to find the data packet that’s sent to the server with any post data, etc. intercept and modify it, changing the score; or make a call to the submit score PHP page, although this second method may not work. vBulletin checks the referrer of the page, so it must come from within the site (i.e. you can NOT just type in bigblueball.com/arcade.php?submit=true&score=32457&gameid=32 (that was made up), instead that can only be called from within another page in the arcade. But, we’re admins (go us). We could manually insert scores into the database. 🙂
May 25, 2007 at 3:43 am #161599David
Participantyou can’t just sniff the traffic, there is much more to the scoring method to that, there is a trigger in each frame… and there is either a checksum or multiple calls while the game is being played.
Either way, I knew about the methods, just not how to execute them, I thought maybe someone else had… but yeah, we can just setup a dummy account and give him fake scores.
May 25, 2007 at 3:46 am #161607Spike
MemberTwo calls I discovered:
arcade.php?sessdo=burn&id=17810&gametime=1180064492µone=1180064497%2E4600
and
arcade.php?note=961740&sessdo=permrequest&id=17810&score=27&fakekey=2&gametime=1180064492
called consecutively in that order. Somehow I doubt he’s manipulating network traffic, so it’s either memory or… he’s legit and just has too much free time to play our games.

ParticipantThe thing is that I’m sure some asshole wrote a program that does it all for you, and thats what he is using.
May 25, 2007 at 4:14 am #161609Spike
MemberThat thought certainly crossed my mind, as well. Well… how do you outsmart a cheater and a liar?
May 25, 2007 at 2:58 pm #161601David
ParticipantYou ban him because he’s not contributing anything anyway.
