Other option, we go and create some fake person to become friends with den, and claim all we want is to know how to get the high scores. Slowly gain his trust, etc. Then, once he spills it all, we do something about it!
There are two ways to cheat. The first involves right-clicking the Flash game and rewinding or going back (worked for some of the games like Flash Poker, where you could “take back” a bet and keep trying until you KNEW the outcome). I’ve added a fix that eliminates those playback options from the Flash object’s right-click menu. This is the method that den was using.
The second method involves posting the scores. If you know the format for the post command, you could send any score you wanted to the arcade without even playing the game. This is unfortunate, but 99.9% of the members wouldn’t know how, and wouldn’t bother trying. And even the ones that do (it has happened here), it’s usually really obvious (impossibly high scores with ridiculously low times) and the culprit usually loses interest in that “game” pretty quickly.
The latter cheat is harder for me to correct. The only way to really do it is to encrypt the scores as their sent, which means I need to edit every Flash file, and the v3Arcade, and I need to have access to the Flash source (I don’t), etc. So I’m inclined to take my chances on this cheat.
I *think* we should be in pretty good shape for now.
Indeed. By disabling the generic flash menu, you’ve effectively lessened the probability of having a cheater amongst our community.
It is considerably much more difficult to cheat now.
Well, since I just reset the scores, we’ll see if den still decides to cheat and get 17 high scores. If he does, I’ll issue a ban. If not, then we’ve solved our problem in an indirect but effective manner. 🙂
