Along with the current auora of the “Schools-suck-at-technology-and-are-really-paranoid” topics, I’d like to say this:
My school has blocked BBB from being accessed. Do you think this is fair, or unfair, and why? I ask for a change, so it could be accessed, but that’s taking awhile…I’d just like to hear your opinions on it, though.
October 22, 2004 at 3:48 am #36263Jeff HesterKeymasterNaturally, I think that stinks. 🙂
BigBlueBall does not support nor condone any hacking or other malicious activity — so why would they block it?
If they have any questions or issues, they can certainly contact me directly and I’ll gladly respond.

…and your point is? Chat is bad? Seems like being educated about chat is a good thing, no?
October 22, 2004 at 4:21 am #36266magistykMemberThey don’t allow forums or chat in school.
October 22, 2004 at 4:23 am #36276seb_thib_55MemberIts because its a form of chat! They block anything that u can chat to other people with! TOO STRICKT! They are just trying to not et in trouble by the cops! LOL

But all my friends do their forum thing while they’re at school…so why can’t I? *shudders* This is pissing me off…I might have to talk to my counselor…God do I hate the school sysem!
October 22, 2004 at 5:04 am #36274rafaelemtMemberI think that your school blocking acces to BBB, really SUCKS BIGTIME. I find BBB to be one of the most helpfull places on the internet not only on things related to instant messaging but also on many things more. I completely agree with Jeff when he says we don’t condone nor support any kind of hacking or otherwise illegal behavior on this forum, so what’s their fear of this place that they block it ??? Maybe it’s just ignorance.

October 22, 2004 at 5:16 am #36273RabidKittenParticipantWell spike, hate to tell you but there’s good chance the reason BBB got picked out and not your friends’ little boards is because BBB is kinda…you know…big. hehe. They’re more likely to pick out a big, spiffy, good board that’s well known rather than a pissant little thing that is useless. With fame comes misfortune.
October 22, 2004 at 5:44 am #36269Someguy03MemberIt seems like school’s block anything that involves IM’ing and any other way of conversing at all because teachers at school seem to be completly paranoid about you not paying attention in class and messing around on the computer. My web filter hasn’t blocked BBB yet, but I’m betting it will soon. Like Dave said, do what I do, and use proxies.
October 22, 2004 at 9:02 am #36271MartinBradleyMemberThat’s correct Someguy. The system administrator at our college will go to any lengths to ensure that we do not have access to any Instant Messenger software, or anything Instant Messenger related.
BBB is blocked, things like Yahoo Web Messenger and MSN E-Messenger are blocked, even if you do a Google search for “Instant Messenging”, it will block the results page.
October 22, 2004 at 10:12 am #36277neo_ny_23MemberWell, Ipersonally have learnt more from BBB rather than from my school. I would realylove my other friends and Profs use this forumto know and discuss about informative topics. Its ridiculous to ban BBB in schools.
October 22, 2004 at 10:15 am #36272MartinBradleyMemberI’m not 100% sure on this, but I don’t think it is BBB that they ban specifically, I think the filters just block anything related to Instant Messenging. Of course, the way around this would be to add BBB to the exceptions list.
I agree though, in some cases BBB has helped me, and others alot more than any school teacher could.
October 22, 2004 at 11:35 am #36267CharlesMemberMeh. My school blocks it too because the catagory “Instant Messaging” is filtered. Along with “Educational Institutions,” which I found ironic while researching for an arts project. My God, Websense sucks, heck the school homepage was blocked at one point.
Oh and Dave, my computers at school don’t let me edit proxy settings, have already tried many times…doesn’t work.
