Rather than “gateway.messenger.hotmail.com:80”, or “messenger.hotmail.com,200.64.1.20:80” or whatever other incaranation you may have tried or may have been the default, just set the same “Server” key to:
messenger.hotmail.com
No other information is necessary. It should search for an open port on its own.
Under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSNMessenger
I do not find the “Server” key in the registry as instructed.I do find “SOCKS4SERVER”
Should I change “SOCKS4SERVER”??? Is that the same as the “Server” key??

No, it’s not the same as the Server key. If it doesn’t exist, try creating it.
For what it’s worth, the original value in my Server key was: messenger.hotmail.com;207.46.104.20:1863 Note that they specify both the domain name and the IP address, separated by a semicolon. They both resolve to the same place.
Since some firewalls are configured to block certain domains (hotmail.com being a common one), the original fix might not work well for everyone, but I think that if you include the IP address it might, like this:
gateway.messenger.hotmail.com:80;207.46.104.20:80
I’ll give it a try from my office tomorrow and let you know. 😉
UPDATE

I then noticed that it became flaky after a couple of days, not sure whether the gateway server sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, I know for certain our firewall rules haven’t changed.
Will try your reg setting from work tomorrow.
Ok, tried gateway.messenger.hotmail.com:80 again from home this morning and it worked fine. I suspect it will not work from the office though. They have blocked access to specific domains such as hotmail.com and mail.yahoo.com. It might work by IP address though, so I’ll give that another try.
I have a norton firewall and can access msn but only to type my messages. When I try to get audio connection the firewall will not allow access. Is there any way I can alter settings in the norton firewall to allow audio yet still have some protection. I am not technically comfortable so if anyone has an answer for me it will need to be very explicitand in step by step format.

no matter what i can’t get on msn messenger I’ve tried to change all those codes that it says to do in here, but this school that i’m at sucks (it’s a boarding school) please help someone! i just want to talk to my friends! I’m still trying to get MSN to work I’m on my office LAN, and have tried doing the post on this thread however with Windows 2K and the latest MSN Messenger 6.1 there is no server section in the reg for me to edit gateway.messenger.hotmail.com:80 into, any ideas where they keep this on a win2k install ?
Will I still need to enter my proxy settings?… I assume so.
Also which should I be putting it under, SOCKS or HTTP???
I did this whole process: Click on Start –> Run
Type in “regedit” and then click OK (without the ” )Navigate through the registry editor to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSNMessengerSelect the “Server” key, Right click, and select “Modify”
Change the value data to:
gateway.messenger.hotmail.com:80then I try entering the IP address, and all I got was :
Signing in to .Net Messenger Service failed becuase the service could not be found. Please make sure that you are connected to the internet. 0x81000302
I had the exact same problem (0x8100036f) 🙁
I solved it the following way:
1) Uninstall MSN Messenger
2) Delete the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/MSNMessenger
3) Install latest MSN MessengerNow it works.
The Server value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/MSNMessenger is now ‘messenger.hotmail.com;207.46.104.20:1863’
G’day guys.
After 2 years of trying to get MSN messenger to work on a second computer at my house I have finally come across a program which actually works.Its not the best solution to the problem of getting MSN to work from behind a firewall or proxy server, but until another solution is provided, this progam will do for now.
It can be downloaded from http://www.hopster.com.
One problem I have found with this program is that it has the tendency to freeze/jam while you have it running. So frequently save any work you have open, or better still try not to have any other programs running other than MSN at the time if possible.
yet for me when it crashes, I shut down this program (which disconnects you from msn), and the computer becomes no longer frozen….if that makes sense.
In the meantime if anyone can find out another solution to get MSN working please post it!
