Okay, it seems just about every day there is somebody or some group or some bot that keeps giving loads of spam messages about some tnanation YouTube thing.
Is there anything we can do to prevent this? Whenever I see the user doing it I just One Touch Ban & Clean, however is there something more effective we can do? It gets annoying to have all these emails come about posts being responded to (way old posts too) when it is just spam.
And when there’s 1 there’s 20, 40 or 60 of them. They are indeed annoying. One morning there were 17 pages of them from a single user.
Here’s the best solution I’ve found:
First, you can’t post a link in your first post (we had this before, but lost it during one of the upgrades).
Second, Posts for all “new” members are moderated (meaning they don’t go “live” until approved. Once their first post is approved, a scheduled task moves them to a group that allows them to make future posts without moderation.
Thoughts?
I vote yes for anything…take a look at the screenshot of a post I just deleted. Ummm, thinking this is not what we want to project to members??

I say no on the moderating firsts posts. Although we have active enough staff here.. I absolutely hate it when staff have to manually approve memberships etc. I personally lose interest very quickly.

I agree. If all my posts had to get approved I would quickly turn away as I’d be like “Okay they don’t trust me enough so screw that.” And then look somewhere else.
That is the risk of moderating their initial posts. Well how about disabling links for the first few posts?
It’s never worked in the past. Although they couldn’t “technically” post a link, they still POSTED the spam — just removed http://www. from the link.
Aside from the viagara ads, which were already displayed for months before we caught it.. I mean, the ads are not insulting or anything.. so lets just deal with it.
We could implement the email registration again, which would probably reduce the amount of spam being posted — but honestly.. if your sick of deleting posts and banning people maybe moderating isn’t for you 🙂

Do you follow BBB on Twitter? If it were any other site I’d have deleted it by now – 9 out of 10 Tweets are spam. I actually use Twitter to monitor when spam needs deleting. I’m pretty sure that’s not what the Twitter feed is supposed to be.

I agree. But again (and more importantly) what does this communicate to members who may be receiving the same spam? We have to accept it as part of our responsibilities as moderators – but if I were a member getting spam from a site – I doubt I’d be heading back any time soon.
Is there any way to perhaps limit the number of posts in a short amount of time? Most of the ones that I’m referring to are managing to get 40-60 posts up in what seems like less than an hour (though I haven’t looked at all the times that carefully).
40-60 posts?! I’ve never seen that in all the spam I’ve deleted. The most I’ve ever seen is perhaps 5-8 threads at a time. And even that, I don’t think they were all from the same IP address.
Has anyone actually done an IP check on some of the address being posted?
The two that I deleted tonight are coming from China.

We can block entire IP ranges, but there is the risk that we’ll block some legitimate users.
The email validation is a PITA for everyone. I’d rather not implement it again.
I get notified via SMS as soon as a new topic is started, and as long as I’m near a computer, I get the joy of bringing down the One Touch Ban Hammer on them. Most of the time, one of you beats me to it!
The massive quantities seem to have been happening over the last 2 weeks and mainly on the weekdays. Though the time of day isn’t consistent.
Next ones I see I’ll run the IP addresses and see what turns up.
