On a (hopefully) brighter note, I’ve turned on Akismet spam detection. I didn’t even know it was an option. Doh!
I’ve used Akismet VERY successfully with WordPress, and now it works within vBulletin. I’m not sure yet what the impact is to the user experience, so create a few posts and see if you notice anything new.

Great, thanks, Jeff. Hopefully that will cut down on the number of spammers.
Well, I haven’t seen the massive spammers back since the change…
But there is still the regular stuff. I’m not familiar with how this particular spam filter works, but most of them have a way to learn what words need to be banned. Does the one-touch ban and clean report that back to a centralized black-list?

One-touch ban and clean does not report to a centralized black-list, but it does locally black-list the IP address of the offender.
The Akismet stuff is supposed to detect spam and flag it for moderation:
“The Anti-Spam API key is used to enable the scanning service for user generated data. The data will sent to the specified service for identification.
If the data is identified as spam, it will be marked for moderation to allow for verification by moderators. You should give your moderators the ‘Can Moderate’ permission to allow for this.”
I have seen a couple posts in the last few days marked for moderation, which I have then deleted with ban & clean. So if that’s how it works then perhaps it’s working as intended.
I’m still seeing some stuff get through without moderation. They show up in the BigBlueBall twitter feed. I’ll keep watching to see if the Akismet thing is getting “smarter.” I appreciate everyone’s help keeping the forums spam-free.
