I have a friend who is having a strange problem with her status messages. I noticed some odd messages on two different occasions next to her name on my friends’ list. When I asked her about them, she said she had not put a custom status message there, nor was it visible in her Messenger friends’ box. On her screen, she simply shows as “available” or “invisible”. I’d appreciate hearing opinions from anyone who thinks they may know what’s happening here. It sounds like the work of a hacker to me.
May 10, 2003 at 9:22 pm #96484snugleupagainstMemberOH Id just chalk it up to the ever loving demented Yahoo! Lately quite a few odd things have been going on. One I have noticed is a couple of friends on my list now and then I see by thier name on my list all thier profiles. Like where a status message would be. *shakes head* Oh how we love our Yahoo! dont we? lol
May 12, 2003 at 3:20 pm #96519LaPub LushMemberA friend of mine had exactly the same kind of problem with a status message being shown that she did not put up. I had her check to see if the status message was with the other canned messages and it wasn’t I didn’t see her “Addicted to u” status message, but 2 of her friends (who don’t know each other) say they saw it next to her name. If anybody has any ideas on how this could have happened, I would really appreciate it.
May 12, 2003 at 6:46 pm #96520lismarwMemberI’m having this same problem. I think it’s been happening for about a week now. After tracking what was going on with another Y! ID on Trillian, I’m able to summise the following:
1.) When you log off messenger, your Y! ID appears to log back on in ‘available’ mode or with some strange status message. The status messages appear to be randomly generated, some are very crude.
2.) The new ‘fake’ status is only viewable by friends already online. If a new friend appears, that friend won’t see you as online or with a strange status while you are offline.
3.) When you come back online, your strange status is still visible to those who never left, and your current ‘real’ status is visible to those that came online during your absence. (I know this is getting confusing)
I’d really like to fix this problem. It is happening with all the Y! IDs on my computer. Doesn’t matter if I am using Trillian or Y! Messenger to access Y! service. Anyone have any info/clues? … Bueller? … Anyone?

May 12, 2003 at 6:56 pm #96496mariettelarkinMemberThis happened to a friend of mine yesterday also with the strange status messages suddenly appearing while he was offline, but showing online. Another strange thing that happened to me was, my messenger box was up and I was away from the computer for a while. When I looked at it when I came back, the names of my contacts had changed to their nicknames. Only thing is, on THIS id, I never listed thier nicknames. So its crossing over with another id or something else demented.
May 12, 2003 at 10:19 pm #96509OreoMemberI think it’s a virus or trojan or something. Because in addtion to all of this, a bunch of people I know in one chatroom have been locked out of their accounts. Perhaps these demented, sick people with too much time on their hands are accessing accounts this way. I don’t know… but something needs to be done about it and SOON. I have written many a message to Yahoo! Abuse…I am now waiting for something to be done. I would suggest that you not only post here… but write to Yahoo! As the saying goes… the squeaky wheel gets the grease. We just need to make sure the right people hear us squeak… that would be Yahoo! (Though I have to give credit where it’s due…and I’ve had MORE help from the people here than Yahoo! So thanks to you all!)
May 14, 2003 at 3:26 am #96495mariettelarkinMemberI just got this message on MY id. It says I’m idle and….f**K-hong4.1@(a web-address). What the hell!
(address that was there was removed my Moderator, incase of virus infected site)
May 14, 2003 at 3:36 am #96500moon_6851MemberSince I posted the message that began this thread, I’ve had two friends who don’t own webcams have a “View My Webcam” status message appear on my friends’ list next to their names. More strangeness.
May 14, 2003 at 3:38 am #96494mariettelarkinMemberI think the least Yahoo could do is let us know if there is a problem with their servers! This is really getting bizarre now.
May 14, 2003 at 4:13 am #96517darkjediMemberYeah so do i, they should email everyone at the least to let everyone know they are at least having problems and trying to fix it. Even though we know they are having problems they shuold. Its weird though, i havnet really had any problems with yahoo messenger. On here and friends of mine online have though.
May 14, 2003 at 4:56 am #96508OreoMemberWhat’s really freaking me out NOW….is that my friend who was blocked only a day or two ago is now getting booted. And when she’s booted “View my cam” messages are showing up in Spanish and Italian. She chats in Italian room the majority of the time….. could this have something to do with it??? Just a little bit MORE confused by the in’s and out’s of our beloved Yahoo!… What gives??? (By the way….she does not have a cam NOR has she EVER had one!)
May 14, 2003 at 2:29 pm #96493mariettelarkinMemberI know this could be a long shot, but do you suppose there is any kind of “common denominator” that is affecting who this is happening to?
May 14, 2003 at 5:17 pm #96526litedaturaMemberI don’t think that’s a longshot at all. I know it started happening to me two days ago when I signed off from my usual ID to check my other one that I hardly use and then went right back to my usual ID. It then had both ID’s shown as logged on and one had a pretty crude status message on it.
I wonder if this is happening to people with multiple IDs. Does everyone else that this is happening to have more than one ID that they might check at one time?
May 14, 2003 at 5:34 pm #96492mariettelarkinMemberYes, I have multiple ids!
May 14, 2003 at 5:40 pm #96513RDOMemberWhere are you seeing the strange status meesage? Is it on other people’s screen when you’re on their list, or are you seeing it at the bottom of your own Yahoo window where normally it would say “Available, Invisible, etc.”?
I have recently been told I was visible on other’s lists even though I show on my Yahoo window “Invisible”….may be related, may not be.RDO
