KeymasterHere’s a cool add-on for MSN Messenger that reads your instant messages aloud to you. Obviously useful to the blind, but fun and interesting to the rest of us, too. It also “tells” you when someone on your buddy list comes online or goes offline, and when you receive mail in your Hotmail inbox.
One caveat! It requires Windows 2000 or Windows XP!
Check it out and post your comments here!

KeymasterOk, I gave this thing a try on my Windows 2000 laptop. The download page tells you you need Microsoft’s Visual Basic support files AND a speech engine installed.
Just for the heck of it, I downloaded the add-on (about 160 KB) and tried to install it straight away. Well God smiled on me today, because it worked like a charm the first time.
Unlike other text-to-speech engines I’ve seen in the past, this one works very well. It has the most natural, smooth text I’ve experienced.
One minor annoyance is that it repeats the name of the person you’re chatting with (prefixing their statement, just like messenger does). So you hear “Dan says: what time is the movie?” instead of just hearing what Dan typed (“what time is the movie?”). Could be a problem when some buddies use REALLY REALLY LONG nicknames, or leet speak or other special symbols in their name.
Otherwise, its a sweet little application. Too bad it only runs on 2000 and XP.

If you dig into their FAQ, you’ll find that it truly on works on Windows 2000 or Windows XP. It will not run in Windows 95/98/ME, period.

Here’s a quote from the FAQ:
Quote:quote:What are the system requirements?
A fast 486 or (optimally) a Pentium or better, running Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Since Talking Messenger is written in Visual Basic 6.0 the runtime files (available at Microsofts ftp site) are required. Additionally you need the Lernout Hauspy TruVoice TTS Engine available here.Sorry Chewy.

KeymasterFrom the TalkingMessenger FAQ:
Quote:quote:I Hate this program, how can I get this off my machine?Just delete the file TalkingMessenger.exe from your PC. If you do not remember where you have placed the file: search for TalkingMessenger.exe by clicking Start -> Search -> etc.Jeff Hester

MemberHello,
Many pardons to the person who said that Talking Messenger will NOT work with Win98, but this is an untrue statement. I am currently replacing an operating system for a freind, and she has used Talking Messenger with Win98 for about 2 or 3 years. I have seen it work on her machine many times, and I know for fact that she has never even heard of Windows 2000 or XP. I am the closest thing she has to an Admin/Tech, so I know the machine intimately, but I did not do the orignal install of Talking Messenger.
Anyways, I am rebuilding her OS, as I said, and am presently reinstalling MSN Messenger and Talking Messenger. She is not here, so I had to wing it 100%. I did find several files in her old “messengerreceived files” dir, and they are all support files for the Talking Messenger app. I have installed them all, and have gotten it to open the config window, and was able to configure it like I think she’ll want. The test button does indeed make the thing talk, now all I need is a person to guinea pig it out on in chat.
The installer files that accompanied the talkingmessenger.exe in her old backup folders were as follows:
MSAgent.exe 392K Microsoft Agent thingee
spchcpl.exe 928K Speech thingee of some sort
tv_enua.exe 998K L&H Speech Engine
vbrun60sp3.exe 1013K VB 6.0 RuntimeNote again that the original OS I observed this running on (flawlessly I might add), was Windows98, and the current OS I am rebuilding is also Windows98. Whether it is supposed to or not, it DOES work on 98. Can’t and won’t speak for 95, or any other MickeySoft OS.
Hope this helped clear the air. Enjoy!
Rick

MemberI’ve tried and tried to get the talking MSN Messenger to work, but every time I click the file it doesn’t do anything at all!!! I made sure that I have all the correct files to download it with and what not, but it’s not working! Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong, or what I’m not doing? That would be awesome! Thanks for your time-

Participant95? Highly unlikely!
Too many ISP’s are thinking of trashing the idea of using 95 all together.. alot of other programs programmers are making sometimes dont eevn run on 98, because Me, NT, and XP are taking over… so maybe 98… talking messenger will work for it (some how) but NOT 95, Im pretty sure about that!Graham — Chewy

I couldn’t confirm it myself, and was going by the software documentation. So it looks like all hope is not lost of those of you still on 98.
