hello guys and gals! I heard that this forum is the best, and now… here i am.
my request is, Can somebody tell me how can i trace IP address of the people I chat with on yahoo messenger? This is not for hacking or any other ideas you may have on your minds, but this is because, one guy did traced my IP address and i am scared that he might be some kind of psycho.
My purpose on knowing his IP address is, i wanted to scare him, that i also know his IP address, therefore he may stop on bothering me if he knows that i also know his IP address. he’s just pissing me off!
thank you very very much in advance to anyone who can reply!
July 14, 2003 at 11:07 am #59669.ParticipantIf this guy knows how to obtain your IP address then he probably knows what its use is for. I doubt he will be to suprised if you do figure out his own IP address cause it would hardly suprise me. Many people know how to obtain an IP address but then lack the knowledge of what to do with it. He might even be on a router or remote proxy in which case you would not even get his true IP address. Its best just to ignore him and block this person with your privacy settings.
July 14, 2003 at 2:38 pm #59656NettiMemberI agree with whitemateria! But also IP addresses change every day and the best you can get is the IP they used that day. I know people have said that with a dial-up the IP changes everytime you dial in and with a cable or dsl they remain the same. However I am on a cable modem and it is programed to change every 24 hours. So, unless you are planning to run a scam, boot, or report this person, there is really nothing to do with the IP. Just ignore him.
July 14, 2003 at 2:57 pm #59650OreoMemberHas this guy given you any reason to worry that he’s a pyscho and is going to do something? Or did he just tell you he had your IP?? If you don’t know your IP chances are that he could have even been making it up. There are many ways to ignore him…put him on ignore and then take your name off of his list. OR if you are afraid you’ll get him angry…just put him on ignore. And just slightly off-topic…I’d like to say that I’m happy to see that Snuggle and Netti are back!! I missed you two!!
July 14, 2003 at 3:57 pm #59668sweet_teen_chickMemberOk the same thing happened to me but the thing is like Netti said IP addresses change, the only best thing you can do is get a firewall so one else can find your IP address, and the best thing is it blocks who ever tries to send something . And if the fella is annoying like Oreo said take your ID off of his messenger and ignore him. You know when this happened to me I got scared for a minute, i didnt even know the guy and the thing was he was gonna use my pics and make a website about me but sometimes they can lie. So chill if you dont have any personal information on your computer nothings gonna happen.
July 14, 2003 at 6:14 pm #59663freddyMemberFirewalls do NOT stop people seeing your IP address!
Firewalls block ports to the outside world so to make it look like your PC is not there. (Good ones do, some just close ports and let everyone know you’re there, which is not as good)
To stop people finding your IP address, you should run everything through a proxy that doesn’t forward your IP, you can find a few free HTTP proxy services, but you would have to pay for these services.
To get a Yahoo! users IP, when you are doing something in p2p mode such as cam, IM or file transfer, open up a command interpreter start, run and command.com(all windows) or cmd(NT,2k,xp) and type netstat to see a list of current connections.
July 14, 2003 at 7:13 pm #59661JohnsonMemberI steal people’s ip’s to trace what city they are in. Sounds harmless to me. But one thing to watch out for, if someone knows were u live, and knows your last name, they can very likely find out your address and telephone #. Online one thing you don’t want people knowing is your last name, i have used peoples real names to trace their personal info. Ip’s are virtually worthless, but if you d/l a lot of stuff, you should be very cautious, you need to make sure you don’t have any trojans on your computer, if someone had your IP, they could scan u for trojans and then use them to gain remote access to your computer. To be totally safe don’t d/l stuff. Personally someone telling you your ip isn’t something to really be concerned about if you ask me. If anyone threatens their gonna hack me, i paste them my ip and tell them good luck.
July 15, 2003 at 7:07 pm #59667sweet_teen_chickMemberOk my question then is how do you stop a person from seeing your IP address??
July 16, 2003 at 1:20 am #59660JohnsonMemberThe only sure way is to not get online. Hackers are constantly scanning random IP’s looking to gain access to them. If you use yahoo messenger, or send emails people that know anything about computers, they can find out you IP. If someone has your IP it’s not really that big of a deal.
July 16, 2003 at 3:37 am #59670metal_gurlMembersee, thats the thing, this guy might use my IP address to gain access to my PC.. and Oh yah about what other people said that IP add changes everytime you get onlined, that only applies to people who have 56K modem, but mine is DSL so basically my IP is Constant. I do have norton personal firewall, but the is some kind of computer freaks, he’s still my IP. So i thought, knowing he’s IP might freak him, and made him think that I’m not the only one, co’z he can also be trace.
So jhonson, if you know how to traced IP, I’m gonna need your help plz!
thanks in advance!
July 16, 2003 at 4:46 pm #59664freddyMemberI need to make a more detailed webpage on this stuff some time.
Your IP: It’s needed, you can’t make requests for thing without it, otherwise how does the server you are sending the request to know how to return the data to you? You send a letter to a company for a job, if you dont put your address in it, how can they reply?
Blocking IP is therefore not possible unless you go do your tasks through a remote server, such as a proxy server. You send your request through a proxy, so that the server actually sees the IP of the proxy server. It then knows to return the data back to you, and as long as its stated as an anonymous proxy, it wont insert your IP address in any way.
Johnson is right, people randomly send data/pings to random IP addresses. A good firewall will not respond to such data, making the potential hacker thinking you are not there, some basic firewalls just stop access, they respond to the packet making it clear you are there.
You said he used your IP address to access your PC. If this is true, then you have a trojan horse installed, which is allowing him to remotely control your PC. You need to then scan your PC to find and remove this Trojan Horse, if you do have one, http://www.simplysup.com is free for 30 days. You can uninstall after 30 days without payment. If it’s clean, chances are he never accessed your pc.
Dial Up users get a new IP each time they reconnect. Cable and DSL users is not always so, but you can usually ask your ISP to assign you a new one. My ISP gives DSL users a new IP every logoff, or every 72 hours. If you are using DSL, you should look into using a good firewall, not necessary one you need to pay for.
July 16, 2003 at 6:16 pm #59666sweet_teen_chickMemberOk this is a stupid question but I dont know much about computers just the basics. So like if you have an antivirus protection program can it like find if any trojans are installed on your computer because some time back I had my whole computer scanned for viruses for the first time and I found a Trojan Horse on it and I thought it was a virus I didnt really know it was like a tracking device so I deleted the file. When you delete it, what happenes??
July 16, 2003 at 9:04 pm #59662freddyMemberAs long as it didn’t spread to anything else, it should be ok.
Some anti virus programs detect and remove trojans, but you can get special trojan scanners, like in my post above.
Trojan Horses act as servers, and let a user remotely do things on your pc.
July 25, 2003 at 6:18 am #59646Jeff HesterKeymasterI’m running ZoneAlarm firewall and Norton Antivirus, and that seems to keep me pretty safe from intrusion attempts. From all that I’ve heard about online security, I’ve gathered that even if someone has your IP address, they really can’t harm you unless they can access your ports.
But lately I’ve gotten alot of spyware on this machine. I’ve installed an application called Ad-aware that scans my hard drives and registry for spyware and removes it, and it’s really helped to get rid of alot of excess pop-ups that I’ve been getting recently.
I think the next step I’m going to take in insuring my security online is to get a proxy server to hide my IP address. I’ve checked out this machine on ShieldsUp and some other security testing sites, and except for my IP address, this computer is pretty secure.
July 25, 2003 at 7:21 am #59659coolguyj2Memberwell for tracing IP on Y! you need to be in direct connection with the user…i.e. either any1 on a webcam or file xfer…
o/w tracing IP merely with chat is not possible unless a trojan has been installed in your system ehich continuously broadcasts your secret info on the net… so metalgurl and sweet chick did u these any of the 2???
it is also possible that you clicked on a link given by the chatter and he had a counter installed on his site. The counter saves the info like IP, Operating System, etc and tells the counter owner about it when he accesses the info. So you might have done this …. scan your HDD for trojans (as already said), install a gud firewall or a good anti virus(a/v), keep your A/V updated and also when u dont wanna surf the net but require your PC to be switched on, then disable the internet (if on DSL), dont leave it connected….
I hope it helps you guys -
