MemberSo what if some one gets your IP…they cannot really do anything with it anyway? Law enforcement can, by doing some other things as well. But someone with an IP cannot really do anything to you…especially since many people have dial-up and their IP changes EVERYTIME and others have DSL IP’s that change.

MemberOreo maybe you dont know but if somebody has your ip they can hijack your ip address or contact your isp and give them your ip to have your internet connection and have the police come after you all they have to do is lie to your isp ๐ think before you say people cant do anything with your ip next time
not trying to argue jus think of the things they could do

I doubt he will be to suprised if you do figure out his own IP address cause it would hardly suprise me. Many people know how to obtain an IP address but then lack the knowledge of what to do with it. He might even be on a router or remote proxy in which case you would not even get his true IP address. Its best just to ignore him and block this person with your privacy settings.I am just trying to get a simple password to monitor a friend’s email, nothing wrong is going on, but I feel like I’m not being informed or lied too. I just want to know if I’m wasting my time on someone. Could you help? You sound knowledgeable

MemberGetting a password without someone’s knowledge or permission is not acceptable unless it is law enforcement. They do not need to ask such question because they know how to do it already. You have NO RIGHT to monitor your friend’s e-mail no matter how much you think you do. It’s wrong. If you do it, you could be arrested. Therefore, you will not find that information here because this is not the kind of site to help you break the law. PERIOD.

MemberPlease email me the repley to this question at branina@yahoo.com thanks.
anyhow, i have a netstat question.
i typed netstat after private messaging a buddy in yahoo. I’ve noticed several hosts names pop up in the list. How do i know which one is the persons using netstat to find their ip addres? i noticed dos prompt doesn’t support DNS lookup to find ip that way. If you can help let me know, i wanna scare some lamer who got my ip address and visualroute his ip to his address to scare him off. thanks.freddy wrote:Firewalls do NOT stop people seeing your IP address!Firewalls block ports to the outside world so to make it look like your PC is not there. (Good ones do, some just close ports and let everyone know you’re there, which is not as good)
To stop people finding your IP address, you should run everything through a proxy that doesn’t forward your IP, you can find a few free HTTP proxy services, but you would have to pay for these services.
To get a Yahoo! users IP, when you are doing something in p2p mode such as cam, IM or file transfer, open up a command interpreter start, run and command.com(all windows) or cmd(NT,2k,xp) and type netstat to see a list of current connections.

MemberI can not figure out this unholy obession with an ip address it is not like you will get a house address, all you are going to get is the city, that is if you are lucky.
Why dont you try netstat before sending an IM and after sending an IM, that way you will see a new IP add. the new one will be the direct connection you have made.
My best advice would be to put him/her on your ignore list and move on. The ip add. in itself is meaninglessMarch 22, 2005 at 10:12 pm #59724neo_ny_23

Question 1. How can one hijack your ip address? May be I dont know about it. Can any one enlighten me about it?
Question 2. How can one lie about sum1 else’s IP address to the ISP and do something fake? Well, its not possible. ISP people are not dumb enough to entertain requests about the information about personal IP addresses. Secondly, I tried that thing myself last year ๐ and got seriously kicked by the ISP people without ne help ๐
The thing which worries me is this: We have a lot of resources on BigBlueBall Forums about how to get IP addresses (offcourse direct and indirect sources), what one can do with those obtained IP addresses, closed and open ports, and their vulnerability and all those security stuff. What alarmed me is some kids on the block are learning those things from BIgBlueBall and then using this knowledge to get the IP address of other innocent people and try to hack their computers and pose serious security threat to them.
The most ironic thing is, one “computer engineer” read my article or reply about Magic PS removal in the forum here, and then used the same technique and some more information to hack one of MY OWN friend. Its absolutely ironic. I am trying to post replies here to help people to overcome their problems and some people are taking those steps and sharpening their hacking skills and posing threat to my own friends…. Now I wonder whether we should make registration compulsory for all guests in order to see our replies.

What someone can do is report your IP as doing illegal activities. They could say you were distributing child porn, or hitting on young kids in chat rooms, or distributing virii, etc., etc. Most IPs can and will drop you if you’re suspected of doing such things (anything illegal)…no ‘real’ proof is actually required nor do you get a chance to defend yourself. Check your user agreements.
Spoofing an IP is actually pretty easy for someone with the right knowledge and equipment. Why would someone do that? Maybe they want to do something that they don’t want their IP associated with.
Having your IP means they *could* get into your computer…especially those with static ones or those on constant connections (DSL/Cable). Just because your IP is dynamic doesn’t mean you’re safe. The average dynamic IPs for broadband users last between 24 hours and 168 hours (1 week).
If you’re on a constant connection, leave your computer on, and run Windows OS…they’re already 90% of the way in. What’s the chances of them getting the other 10%? Depends…unless they know what they’re doing, probably not real good. But the possibility is always there.

MemberWell, according to ur stats mdnky, my computer is realy vulnerable (i hv broadband, and leave it on most of the time and got a static IP address), but am pretty much confident that no body can ever break into my computer ๐ I know what I am doing and whats going on behind the ports ๐ Oh yeah. I dont even have a firewall also. But again, let me tell other users that this doesnt mean that you shuld sit quietly and let your computer be hacked or something. So better secure your computer with a good Firewall or Antivirus or Spysweeper.

MemberThe last several posts about IP addresses are not all entirely correct so I’m here to set the records straight.
1). ISP’s do not “drop” a user because someone said that they are doing something illegal. ISP’s must have proof before kicking you off.
2). Spoofing an IP is rather easy but all that is good for is sending spam/doing a DoS attack. There really isn’t much else that is good with spoofing an IP. Also reporting that IP as doing illegal activity (ie. a yahoo user recording the IP and telling that IP’s ISP about it doing illegal activity) will do nothing. ISP’s only do something to a user (ie kick them off) if they are deffinately doing something they shouldn’t. They won’t kick someone off with no proof of illegal activity or any activity that violates the agreement made with the ISP. And an ISP can tell if a user is or is not doing illegal activity.;)
3).
If you’re on a constant connection, leave your computer on, and run Windows OS…they’re already 90% of the way in.
That statement is very far fetched. Yes Microsoft is somewhat insecure but you pretty much have to do something to make yourself that insecure. Windows as it stands (which goes pretty much unchanged by most non-advanced users) isn’t necessarily vulnerable to a “hacker” trying to gain access by means of just “using the IP address.” If there isn’t a trojan already on the system then chances of someone getting in are not that great. Not to mention, DSL/Cable modems have a built in firewall that is on by default.
You have to realise that most insecurities with Microsoft involve Internet Explorer and how vulnerable it is. Most break in attempts made against an operating system are based on the use of Trojans not on just someone trying to hack in. You also have to keep in mind that anyone with any capability of doing so wouldn’t waste their time hacking people on Yahoo! You don’t have anything important that they would need/want so why would they bother?
Also, just because you are on a Broadband connection with a static IP doesn’t mean that you are any more vulnerable than someone on Dial Up who’s IP changes.
Why dont you try netstat before sending an IM and after sending an IM, that way you will see a new IP add. the new one will be the direct connection you have made.
IM’s don’t necessarily establish a direct connection. In fact, the chances of it doing so are probably 100/1. Not to mention they have to be on your buddy list. You’re most likely to just get the yahoo servers.
anyhow, i have a netstat question. i typed netstat after private messaging a buddy in yahoo. I’ve noticed several hosts names pop up in the list. How do i know which one is the persons using netstat to find their ip addres? i noticed dos prompt doesn’t support DNS lookup to find ip that way. Try netstat -n. That shoes the IP address rather than the hostname. Also, you can’t tell if someone is using netstat to find someone’s IP. If you’re worried about someone trying to get yours, don’t use direct connections. Also, don’t bother with scaring some lamer by doing a visual route. It won’t do you much good. Chances are he/she knows about that too and thinks you can get a home address from the IP address. Just ignore him and forget that he exists.
Well, that’s it for my ranting and raving for now.

Memberif you want to get someone’s IP address by messenger: sent him/her a file like 300k weight and while it’s sending open the commandprompt and type “netstat” and you’ll get a connection list. Anyways if you wanna enter his computer, you’ll have to scan all his ports and if he has an IP address obtained by DHCP server then you woun’t have a chance to enter it cuz the IP changes every 1 or 2 hour. As if he’s behind a firewall or even a router there’s less luck to enter his computer what is pathetic to **** someone’s proprety….

MemberEven if you are on DSL or T1 Connection you can release and renew your IP address by typing in ipconfig /release on a command line then type in ipconfig /renew this will assign you a new IP address. Just because this guy got your IP address doens’t mean a whole lot. If he doesn’t know anything about computers that is probably all he can do. Alot of times their bark is bigger than their bite. Just put him in perm. iggy and go on.

MemberAlot of people don’t try to use your ip address to hack you, they use it to hack others or paysites. to find a good anon proxy isn’t that hard and you can mask your tracks by ALWAYS wearing a proxy(it’s like sex)hehehe you really have nothing to worry about when someone has your proxy addy unless it is static, anon. most of these yahoo’s just want it to bruteforce sites so they don’t get popped for cracking porn sites YOU do! unfortunately
