MemberOkay, to answere Mica’s question (which is actually kinda hard to understand 😮 ), did he say how he got your IP address, and if he has it, I can almost guarantee that he won’t be able to do anything with it. If you want to know his IP address so you can report what he’s doing to his ISP/the proper authorities, then this little bit of info might help you out. You see, when you send an email through yahoo, hotmail, or through anywhere else, it shows the IP address of the computer (or network if the computer is behind a proxy router) used to send the email. To check the IP addresses of an email message, go into your Outlook Express and right click on one of the messages, and click on properties. Then go to the “Details tab” and look for something like this:
X-Originating-IP: [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]
X-Originating-Email: [xxxxxxxxx@hotmail.com]
X-Sender: xxxxxxxxxxx@hotmail.comThe X-Originating-IP is the IP address of the sender, and if that is in the email, then you can do a reverse DNS (which can be done here http://www.DNSstuff.com {middle column second one down}) lookup of the IP address and then report the person to his/her ISP. I can almost guarantee that his ISP will at least send a warning to him that he is violating the user agreement. I know the ISP I work at does that ;). Anyways, other than that, there isn’t much you can do. I wouldn’t worry too much about him having your IP address, unless you’ve sent him an email, but you might also want to go ahead and run any anti-virus/anti-spyware programs you have. Hope this helps! ^_^
And for maiga, no, they cannot get your IP address from chatting in a regular web based chatroom. All messages that are posted in a chat room go through the yahoo servers, making it extremely really extra hard (yeah yeah, that didn’t make much sense) to get your IP address. I’m sure there is some way to do it, but not many (if any) people know how to do it, and if your daughter spends her time in the teen rooms and such, then I’m pretty sure she (and your security) are pretty safe. Hope this helps ya both out! ^_^

Memberthanks alot zhungelian your repply was very helphfull, so you mean someone trying to get my daugther’s ip adress(mine actually) in a regular web based chatroom, will get the server’s ip adress instead of mine?
April 27, 2004 at 2:08 am #59697zhugeliang
MemberExactly. Basically, the servers act as a proxy server. Because of the way that chat rooms work, all messages are sent to the yahoo server and then forwarded to everyone in the room. It would cause a lot of problems to have all the messages sent in a chatroom go p2p to every user in the room directly from each other. Not only that, but you’ld also get the “IRC wars” that happen on IRC (where users boot each other by flooding a persons IP address with pings and DoS attacks) in order to take over a room. Granted you still have that in a way, with the booters, but there are 3rd party chat clients that help to deal with that problem. I hope this helps, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask! ^_^

Memberthanks a lot , you seem to have a good knowledge on this subject, now my question takes a lil twist, so someone can get my ip adress and figure out what’s my isp?(yahoo, msn, hotmail, etc.and if so then they can inqire about my info, I need to know this because my daughter says there are cops posing as kids in the chat rooms(wich I dont know if it’s true,)she says they can get anyone’s ip adress then get the personal info from the internet provider and charge the person(ussually old guys trying to pick up young girls), does this make sense? is it posible even for a cop to get the ip adress and if so I wonder how they do that since the chatrooms I allowed my daughter to chat you cant see anyones ip adress at first sight how would they go about geing it.
and do you know if an older guys can be charged with a crime just by chatting with my daughter? just chatting nothing nasty or anything but in a kids room, wondering just in case.April 29, 2004 at 5:01 am #59648mariettelarkin

This sounds way too suspicious to me. I would think you would be grateful that someone is montoring the conversations and not care if someone is charged with a crime or not.
April 30, 2004 at 4:55 pm #59696zhugeliang
MemberYes, cops to monitor the chat rooms, but not all of them, and not all the time. However, they do not have any access that differs from any other user. They can’t trace your IP address if any other user would be unable to do so. And no, older guys chatting with your daughter won’t be charged with a crime. It’s not a crime to talk to someone, no matter what their age, or teachers would be in big trouble, lol. Anyways, if someone is able to get your IP address, yes, they can find out what your ISP is by doing a reversed DNS lookup on your IP address, but cops are not able to just get your IP address if they are monitoring the room. They are not given special access or resources for that. The only thing they do is catch olders guys trying to get with girls that are, lets say, 13 years old. They pose as a 13 year old girl and when a guy says he’ll go to her house and stuff, they agree and catch them trying to be pedifiles. Hope this help. ^_^

MemberOk, so someone has your IP addie…and they keep changing names and harrassing you…what do you do?? Well for one, I would get their IP addie myself (there are numerous ways to do this, see all the other forum replies…) then download a decent firewall. One of my favorites is Protowall, and another one is Kerio. With these firewalls, you can block their IP addies period. Simple as that. Then they definitely can’t “hack” into computer for one thing…and I think it even blocks yahoo chat too. You guys are correct in that you can’t get an IP addie with just chatting with someone…however, I don’t think the Yahoo server completely acts as a proxy or anything…so it may very well forward the IP’s of people chatting. Also, if that guy has an IP that changes every 24 hours, or every logoff (which is often the case) you may have to block a range of IP addresses. If someone gets your IP address, you can usually just change your IP address by changing the slot that your NIC resides in, putting it in another PCI slot…and then they no longer have your IP. I’m not really sure if someone mentioned it or not, but you could also run through a proxy, and that would hide your IP address admirably, if you wanted to go through with all the bother. Well, I think I’ve said all I’m gonna say for now…later everyone!!

MemberHiding IP address == Get a decent firewall !!!! Its a must.
Getting IP address == 1. When we receive files from user thru file transfer or watch some one’s cam or do a voice conferrence, their IP address can be easily found if we type netstat -n in Start>Run>cmd.
2. There is a software called IP Vision Pro by which you can get the IP address of a person by sending them a link.
3. One can see the IP address from the sender by email ( some email clients like rediffmail or indiatimes email dont support it ) by looking at the full headers. So get urself a nice firewall and just relax n chill.. Oh yeah.. DON’T receive any files from any strangers. and after receiving that file immediately scan it using the latest Anti virus before opening it.

Member*First time poster*
I have to say all this information has been extremely inciteful. I putz around with PC’s but nothing to the level you people are talking about.
I recently went into a yahoo chat room to discuss my views of a recent movie. A heated debate got started and a day or two later was contacted by someone in the in the room saying the person I was arguing with the previous night was bragging that he had a friend get my IP address obtaining my home address and was launching an attack on my PC. I had pm’d the person I was arguing with but never this “friend” who supposedly is attacking my PC.
So I guess what I’m asking is: If a person is pming you is there any information they can send to a friend to have them trace your IP? Also if they did get my IP if someone is a higher end PC user can they go as far as getting my home address?
May 14, 2004 at 10:20 pm #59722neo_ny_23
MemberFirst of all there is no higher end PC user or lower end PC user or middle end PC user.
Secondly he can trace your IP address only if you had done atleast one of the following things that night:
1: Watched his/her cam or let him/her watch your cam.
2: Had a voice conference with him/her.
3: Sent or received any file from him/her.
4: Clicked on any link he/she sent to u.
5: If you were booted in the middle of the conversation or sometime latter also.Even if he knows your IP address a lot depends on the internet connection you are using. Dial up connections get a new IP address every time you connect. Cable connection change the IP address almost every 24 hours. If its LAN or broadband connection, I presume ( not sure ) the IP address remains quite permanent.
Even if he traced your IP address, he can find only the phone number, email address and the office address of your ISP company. Offcourse its tough and almost impossible to find your home address from the ISP company and its pretty illegal also unless you are a cyber cop trying to trace a terrorist. So just be cool and make sure that you DON’T accept any file or click on unknown links while chatting. Get a firewall also.
HTH.;)
P.S. Congrats for your first post
P.S.S. The guy with whom you had the debate was only “bragging”. There is a difference between translating words into deeds which very few people can do. So chill and don’t worry.May 17, 2004 at 11:53 am #59695zhugeliang
MemberI work at an ISP, so I might be able to answere that question about them finding your address. The answer, is NO. ISP’s do not give out any personal information at all to anyone. The only thing an ISP is allowed to do is confirm information, after you tell it to them. As far as using the IP address to get your home address, no, false, can’t happen. The only address they’ll get from your IP address is the address of your ISP, and that’s it. Also, neo, you can’t get a person’s IP address by watching their cam, that only works if it’s in super webcam mode. From what I’ve had the chance to test, voice conferences also do not surrendur your IP address, but I’m not totally sure on that one. Also, there is no such thing as a “cyber cop.” That’s just a fancy futuristic term for a branch of the FBI that deals with “cyber crime.” Oh, yeah, and Cable internet is broadband neo, just so you know. At any rate, the only difference between Cable, DSL, Wireless, Fiber optic, T1, T3, and a LAN, is that Cable shares bandwidth with everyone in a designated area and operates over your cable (cable tv) connection, DSL opperates over the phone line much like dial up, but at a higher frequence, Wireless is as the name implies, Fiber optic uses Fiber Optic wires, T1 is a business connection that is rather fast and acts like an SDSL line, T3 is an upgraded T1, and a LAN is a network of computers that are isolated in one way or another from the internet, either by not having access to the internet at all, or through a router/server set up to host more than one computers’ internet access. This server/router then has the IP address given by the ISP, and the computers on the LAN (excluding the server, if there is a server rather than a router) have a seperate IP address that corresponds to the network, usually a number like 192.168.1.***. The IP address of the computer on said LAN does go through an address change every so often, but that doesn’t matter because the router/server acts as a proxy server (in fact, it IS a proxy server) and hides the IP address of the computers on the LAN. All internet connections, whether dial up or some form of broadband, have dynamic IP addresses, unless you specifically request a static IP address, and that costs extra money.

Well, I think I’ve said all I’m gonna say for now…later everyone!!Umm, yeah, getting their IP address won’t help you any. If you’re freaked out about someone trying to do something with yours, chances are, they can’t. Most IP addresses are not static (unless you pay to have it static) so it will change ever so often. With dialup, it changes evertime you sign on, with broadband, it changes anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, depending on the ISP. Changing the slot you NIC resides in, doesn’t actually change your IP address, your ISP determines what IP address you have, and for how long. And no, if you block someone’s IP address, it won’t block them on yahoo. If you have a firewall like sygate, or zonealarm, or if you are using a hardware firewall, then you can configure it to reject ping requests (both icmp and ack/fyn) and then they can’t ping your computer, if they do have your IP address. They will most likely think that the address is fake. Since most people on yahoo (if not all) are script kiddies, then you don’t have anything to worry about cause the chances are, they dont’ know that. And no, the Yahoo servers do not forward you IP address at all, I’ve checked, and that question was answered a while ago on whether it does or does not by several people.
Quote:quote:Hiding IP address == Get a decent firewall !!!! Its a must.Umm, a firewall isn’t a must, but it is nice. One does not have to have one, seeing as how it doesn’t hide an IP address, it just restricts the traffic that comes in and out of the computer according to the policy programmed by the operator of the computer. There are a lot of people who don’t use any firewalls at all, and they have no problem with the internet. In fact, if you’re not computer savvy, then you might not want a firewall, it will most likely confuse you a lot.

MemberThanks zhugeliang for the information. But regarding getting IP from webcams, I have done that many times as experimenting the netstat -n ‘s capability. And my webcam was infact never in super mode. About getting IP address from a voice conference, yeah, I was unsure about that. My bad.

MemberThanks for telling us stuff we already knew. Plus, if I wanted to find out if it was their IP address with the cams rather than the yahoo server, i’ld just run my packet sniffer. And, just so you know neo, I did a test on that cam deal, and it is in fact a p2p thing now, at least with the new Yahoo! v. 6.0. It didn’t used to be that way, however, with the new one also, IM’s between buddies are no longer p2p. Don’t know why those changed, but they did. Well, that answeres that question, now on to test the voice chat thing. 😀
