Next question is for zhugeliang…
Few days ago, I was connected to one of those Yahoo! groups through my Yahoo! Messenger, and I was chatting with one lady using cam to cam. I’m 33, she is around 25-30 years old, so nothing illegal in my opinion. We were playing on cams ’cause I’m single, she is single (if she doesn’t lie). I’m pretty sure I was connected with supermode enabled, ’cause I’ve noticed animation on my cam was pretty smooth… anyway, after few days, same lady (I know for sure) logged in under different account, and she asked me to turn my cam on… I wasn’t suspecting anything, so I turned on my cam, showing just my face, nothing else… after few seconds (30-50), she said: “…OK, it’s enough… I have your IP, I’m reporting you for sexual harassment… I have time you were logged in, blah, blah, blah…” She said, I’m calling them right now…
Then she showed me some data, some organization, phone number etc. , actually, organization is in my town, but nothing to do with me… also, she didin’t show me my IP address.
I use software firewall (Agnitum Outpost), but also hardware one SMC Barricade 7004VBR. I’m connected through ADSL Hi-speed connection. Should I be worried about this ? I mean, I didn’t force anyone to do anything agains her will, just playing with lady on cam. I don’t do that offten, and I’m thinking that was so stupid, and I uninstalled Yahoo! Messenger, ’cause I don’t wanna do that anymore… it was so stupid. I am pretty shy in my real life, so that was good excuse to start with that, but now I think it’s so stupid. I tried to please myself and someone else who wanted that (no one forced her), and what I get ? Nothing… she wants to report me and sue me now…I’m not a bad person, I just made mistake connecting to Yahoo! I’m not gonna do that anymore, ’cause I blindly believed there are still some good people with who you can be little intimate, not rude… but, all I get is someone who wants money from suing me… this world just went to… I don’t know…

Okay, there are a few questions I first need to ask you. One of them being, did you mention the town you are from, or, have any information anywhere stating where you are from? If you did, then that’s how she knows what town you are from, however, since she just said she was calling an organization in no way related to you, it means she has no real information from you, just the town you are in. I myself wouldn’t be worried, and you don’t have to completely log off of yahoo because of it. IP addresses do not reveal any of your information, except what ISP you get your internet connection through. Basically, they don’t anymore than you have told them/put in your profile. My advice, however, is lie about a few things in your profile, like age (only by a few years) and location. Also, don’t be specific about any information, just be vague, that way no one can trace any inforamtion to you. Whoever she supposedly called (don’t count on her making any phone calls) won’t do anything about any kind of harassment or anything like that, so you’re safe. Just make sure you only show your cam to people you trust, but since you have a hardware firewall, you should have it configured so that it’s pretty secure. Since I’m sure it’s pre-configured that way, I’ld say you’re pretty damn safe, so don’t worry, just don’t let those things get to you. People who do that just want to scare you and crap like that, so just ignore them, and don’t let them get to you. Anyways, have fun chatting, just be careful. 🙂

I was so worried about everything, and I’m still worried… Yes I remember I told her what city I’m from, ’cause she said that she was from the same city. I’m just affraid, ’cause I also remember, she was asking me to show my face and whole body in the same time, otherwise, she won’t play with me…

expensive ones… later she was so mad ’cause I wasn’t playing like she
asked me (I didn’t show whole body all the time), and she left me telling me I’m gonna report you for sexuall harassment… one hour later, one girl (I guess it was the same one) just buzzed me asking me to prove that I have cam, otherwize she will not show me her cam… I don’t remember what was her name, but I know it was something like real first name and last name (probably she was just masking herself). After few seconds (30-60) she said It’s enough I have your IP and time, I’m calling them…She gave me full address of some company totaly unknown to me, but I
remember at the end she showed me some phone number with different prefix from those used in my town… it was prefix number for town in where my ISP is really located (around 600 km from here)… I don’t remember whole number, so I can not check… I was so scared and I couldn’t believe that people like her even exist on this planet…I don’t know my friend… what she thinks ? If she wants some money, why she doesn’t go and hard work in some factory for money ? She want easy money, right ? That’s much easier than work 10-12 hours/day every single day like me…

Quark dont worry yourself fella, no cop is goin in front of a judge to ask for a court order to get your ISP to release your personal information if all he has is what some girl is telling them. You could be her next door neighbor and shed have problems gettin the cops to listen to her with that flimsy story. Sexually harrassment means harrassment. You gotta bug the **** out of someone for a good length of time before its considered harrassment.
Anyway, all the major ISPs fight tooth and nail not to give up personal information of their subscribers. That means a court hearing where one lawyer tells a judge why he thinks they should be forced to give your info and one lawyer tells the judge why they shouldnt have to give up your info. No one is gonna say to a judge “well we have this womans statement and, umm.. we have some text she says he typed, and umm… well thats about it judge. Oh wait heres 30 seconds of video… Order them to give up his personal information.”
If she is in a different state you have even less to worry about because state police dont go state to state for crimes the FBI does and if youre worried about the FBI investigating you for an adult chat you might as well lock yourself in the house and wash your hands 30 times a day.
Theoretically, if you do something on your webcam that is considered obscene in the community that it was viewed in, it is a crime.
In the real world: The Bush administration is very proud of their perfect record of prosecuting these obscenity cases. I think they have a 28 case winnning streak goin. 26 plea agreements and 2 jury verdicts (hes been in office for almost 4 yrs) That means 100s of rooms like Daddys4Daughters and PreteenSexPics at full capacity 24hours a day are generating criminal cases a speedy one every 2 months… I wouldnt be puttin a lawyer on retainer just yet.

quark you just have to get the IP from the USER through netstat Command in DOS and the next thing you do is that give that IP in SMARTWHOIS its a software or go to http://www.visualware.com get visualroute or there is a demonstration on there site that you can just give that IP and it will tell you the City name and the ISP name and There Tech Support No. and all its that easy … and about the personal info you cant know anything presonal from the IP
Okay, for one, he doesn’t even talk to her and he stated already that he doesn’t even use yahoo anymore Not only that, but I highly doubt he has any want to talk to her anymore. Also, he doesn’t need to do a whois on the IP address, there is no point. Not to mention, you wouldn’t call their tech support, you would just send an email to their abuse center at abuse@ispname.com/net. Also, tracing the rout is pointless, why would you want to know what town they are in, what purpose would that serve? Not only that, but there is a 95% chance that they will do nothing about it. Please, just forget about IP addresses because they are useless to pretty much everyone here, especially concerning Yahoo! I don’t mean to be a jerk, but there is no point in continuing on telling people about doing a whois on an IP address, simply because there is no use that you can get out of it. I know, it’s cool to know about IP addresses when there are many that don’t, but like I’ve said before, there isn’t any point in finding someone’s IP address. You just need to know that they can as little with yours, and you can with theres. Period.

Why would you need to know that, and wouldn’t that be more of a question for the AIM forum section, rather than yahoo. At any rate, I don’t see any real reason for anyone to be getting anyone’s IP address. There isn’t anything you can do with it that isn’t of malicious intent. If that person wanted you to know it, they would have told you what it is.
Wonderful answer my friend Zhugeliang ! That’s for sure someone else’s privacy breach, I mean if someone wants to know your IP. If I want to know someone’s current IP, I will ask him to tell me, and that’s only in case when I have to fix my father’s computer remotely (UltraVNC or PC Anywhere)… he lives 15000 km far from me, and he’s still on dial-up, so his IP changes every single time he connects to internet. He knows why I need to know his IP, and that’s for good cause. I hate when people asking how can I find out my friend’s IP… that’s a lie, biggest lie they can tell ya… if that person is their friend, why don’t they ask him nicely for his IP ? Stupid that hurts…

misled84What a great website and wonderful forum! I think I will post my two cents worth here.
As this thread concerns gaining information from IP addresses, booters and other lesser or greater Internet terrorists acts, I think it should be said that IF the offenders are a fairly active on the Internet (not just chat), and post in forums etc., many of them (forums) actually POST the IP of the sender! (Egads!) You can often do a search for IP addresses and email addresses and find them there.
When someone gets too far out of hand on Yahoo (IE: Death threats, etc. ) and continues harassment for any period of time, I simply create a “special” profile and troll (nicely) for the offender in their known chat rooms. In other words, a “Social Engineering” project is started.
Once contact is made, I establish a rapport with them, there is usually a cam invite sent to me (IP Grab Opportunity) but I ask that we schedule a cam time in the future as to not reveal my IP (I use a library or Internet Cafe for those.. and if my subject is a male, and you would be surprized how many women found in those Internet Cafes, or non Internet active friends, are willing to be part of the ploy “I’m ready for my closeup Mr. Demille!” ) , I am often sent pics of the offender (IP Grab Opportunity from the email headers), phone numbers, addresses, Post Office Box numbers, snail mail, etc.
Once I have their IP address, I go looking for posts which contain either their @yahoo.com email address and or their IP. If I have no success there, I continue “social engineering” the person until they ultimately reveal themselves. (You would be surprised how much they love to BRAG, especially to a “helpless girl”) Most if not all service providers keep records of who was on, what POP and IP etc.
I have actually had a fella brag to my “female persona” just what he knew about me (my normal ID), what he was planning for my future both on and off the Internet. Sadly for him, I had given my logon name and password to a local police detective (part of a computer crimes task force). Yahoo was very forthcoming with information regarding the poor misguided fella when the officer saw threats against my person and property.
If you are harassed, let Yahoo know! If you are threatened, LOG IT! And then let EVERYONE know (cops, FBI, anyone who will listen). Also if you are given to viewing webcams there are a few nice programs out there what will record the entire webcam interaction. (So, no showing your “woo woo” out there unless you don’t plan on running for office someday!)
I heartily recommend to anyone using a highspeed Internet connection, that that buy and use a Router/Switch which shares Internet connections (some even have their own version of a netstat showing all connections in real time) with several computers (even if you ONLY have ONE computer). They add protection to you computer when configured correctly, that does not draw from your system resources like software firewalls do (I use both as well as x netstat pro and log every connection)

I have a question or two and I am fairly new so please understand that I am trying to learn all of this. I have nortons internet security 2004 and a router that came from my isp ( linksys is the router)
When I run the netstat -n I see a 207 blah blah. I was always under the impression that if you had a firewall it started with a 65.. so on and so forth. How can you tell what your own Ip address is and if others are seeing it ? If you have a firewall/router and you run Netstat -n and you are chatting with someone if they run netstat -n do they see a different so called ip address than you do ?
If you run netstat -n and you see a fin_wait_2 what exactly does that mean? Also, someone mentioned firewalls from software aren’t any good. Does that mean Nortons internet security that has a built in firewall isn’t any good? The reason I’m asking is because when I run netstat -n it says close_wait. I also read on here that if it just closes a port it lets someone know your computer is active( hope I am explaining this right ) I am lost , from what I’m reading . All the things I have that I thought were protecting me aren’t doing diddlysquat.
