MemberAre you a vegetarian for any reason? Do you not understand vegetarianism or why people would or wouldn’t want to be a vegeterian? Have any questions? This is the thread for all questions and comments vegeterian.;)
(BTW, i’m not but I thought it would be a good, non racial discussion)

Memberwell whenever the discussion turns to this topic, it seems everyone assumes that there are only two alternatives. eating meat or vegetarianism, or veganism, which is even more extreme. I really like this site: http://mafism.atspace.com/ it describes a middle way. makes a lot more sense than vegetarianism if you ask me

MemberHmmm. I’ve always wondered how the vegeterians get real protein and stuff you know? I’m pretty sure we could all survive without meat but that’s if we were never taught to eat meat. *glances at chicken* mmhmm…. :-p yep. meat lover right here. So yep I’ve got questions for the vegetarians: How do you get the right amount of protein? What do you eat for variety? Is there a lot of salad in your everyday meal? That covers it for now…but I know this kid in my school that eats rice every day. that’s all he ever eats ๐ isnt that unhealthy :/?
-eat-meat quik
*glances at salad* yuck…i hate that stuff…*kicks it away*November 13, 2004 at 6:36 pm #70033gossipingrae
Memberi looooove meat too much to give it up! I just dont eat any kind of seafood. *yuuuck* that is some nasty stuff! I love to eat beef, turkey, chicken, mmmmm. I like salad too, caesar is the best! I just dont think I could live my life without meat.
so if anyone here is a vegetarian, why do you do it? is it for animal rights reasons or just because you don’t like the taste of meat?
November 14, 2004 at 12:34 am #70010RabidKitten
ParticipantNo worried because apparently seafood isn’t meat *glares at those stupid Lent fish Fry posters* Anyways, there are lots and lots of other ways to get protein. Oils and beans and eggs and nuts are all good sources. There’s also great herbs and such that can keep people balanced, Elderberry being one of the best things anyone can take to stay healthy. Heck, there’s even an herb called “Stevia” that Japan uses as a sugar supliment because one tablespoon is equal to 10 of sugarcane or chemically made sweeteners, and it also doesn’t highten your blood sugar or effect diabetics…of course the US wont approve it because there’s too much stock in SugarCane, even though Stevia would be a much better idea… *sigh* What were we talking about? Vegetarianism?
Anyway, people do it for a lot of reasons. I’m not a vegetarian, but I dislike a lot of beef and pork products so a lot of the time it’s almost easier to say that I am, just so that I don’t have to explain it to whoever I’m with. (heh). I never personally understood the animal rights things…I mean, did you know that if we let cows run wild, they would completely destroy the world. They poop where they eat, they’re unkempt, dirty animals and would eat everything in their way, demolishing whatever grounds and grasses we have. Not to mention that they were domesticated for the slaughter and for milking, making them the creatures they are today, sure, undomesticated it would’ve been a plan, but now it’s completely unrealistic. They do nothing but poop, eat and multiply like the dickens, and would eventually destroy everything.
I knew a girl who actually would not chew any kind of gum with geletin in it because she heard that geletin is ground up animal bones. *shrug* never looked into it, but hey, to each his own, I guess. I’d actually understand someone who didn’t like the taste of meat, or did it for health reasons than someone who did it “for the animals”. But that’s just me. *shrug*November 14, 2004 at 4:57 am #70015Qwerty

It’s not a “middle way” as such, just an alternative.

MemberI’m a vegetarian, but not because I choose to be. I just can’t seem to swallow it. I have no idea why.
I’m actually quite strong (well, compared to most of the other students in my classes). I don’t eat peanuts, beans, etc. very often, so I have no idea. I don’t eat salad very often.
I love my rice and noodles! I wish I could have noodles all day! YUM! (I’m Asian by the way)

Get a better chef. I can’t understand for the life of me why someone would ‘choose’ to not eat meat. No offense to any vegetarians but every reason I’ve ever heard is just plain stupid. I’ve heard everything from “i wouldn’t eat anything that had a face” to “cuz I saw a chicken get killed when I was small” And I can’t believe anybody who says they don’t like the taste of meat, sorry I just can’t, it’s only natural to eat meat. It goes back to days of cave people. U think some starving caveman is gonna become a picky little b*tch and not want to eat the buffalo the tribe just killed, please, gimme a break. You see those front teeth u have, they are for tearing into meat, not just for biting an apple. Let’s see what other dumb excuse have I heard, oh yes there’s the “animals are dirty creatures”, once again, get a better chef who knows how to properly cook food and use preservatives. I’m eating the cow, not the sh*t she’s been walking around in all day, sherlock. And last time I checked, many plants are picked out of the ground, the freakin ground, the ground that many people and other animals walk and urinate on, don’t see any of u vegans complaining of ‘dirty plants’ do ya. Let’s see what else, well there are the bible thumpers and they have their religous reasons. Let’s just say I’m an atheist, so those godly reasons mean nothing to me. But to speculate for a moment, I’d hate to be the person who led a good wholesome life but would not be allowed into the ‘pearly gates’ because he ate too much pork. How retarded does that sound. Just eat the freakin t-bone steak and don’t worry about who’s slaughtering the cow, for the love of jesus crispy chicken deluxe ๐ Somehow I think if plants had mouths and you could hear them scream, and see them suffering, vegetarians would just drink water all day. But since people are creative, I’m sure I will here new and improved excuses forever, so keep eating your tofu and your bean burgers, that’s more meat for me ๐

Woah, that’s arrogant.
Maybe through technological advances us “cave men” can move on (from raw fish and meat and cannabilsm) to veriety and choices. Some people choose not to eat meat. So what? Each vegetarain saves x amount of animals in their lifetime apparently. Is there anything wrong if they choose to do that?

It goes back to days of cave peopleIt may be natural to eat meat, but if you look back on the hwole of human histroy mass consumption of meat is a relativly recent phenomenon, most of the time humans haven eaten mainly vegetables.
And as to your arguement its only natural to eat meat… well its only natural to eat damn near anything, but many people don’t like the taste of some vegetables, or some other food products, and tehre are some people who don’t like the taste of meat.
As for other reasons for not eating meat, you may consider them to be illogical, but thats no reason to arrogantly rip into them, state you’re opinion politely and you’ll egt more poeple who are willing to listen to you.
Personally I wouldn’t become a vegetarian myself, and I find many of teh arguements given illogical, but I believe it’s a valid choice as peopel ahve always chosen to eat what food they like… so let them.
Quote:quote: No worried because apparently seafood isn’t meat *glares at those stupid Lent fish Fry posters*Did you know that beavers, and someo other giant rodent are calassified as fish by the vatican (so you can eat them in lent)?
Wierd or what…

Memberi have a friend who does not eat meat simply because she does not like the taste of it. which is fine. we eat all the time together when I have meat on my plate, and she is cool about it. some people can’t even eat at the same table as others, but that to me is just weird.
my grandfather married this lady who is a vegan, and she doesn’t even let him cook meat in the house. so for thanksgiving, my grandfather has to give up his beloved turkey to eat vegetarian lasagna. I personally think it is rude of her to not even let him keep luncheon meats in the refrigerator or cook a small turkey for himself on thanksgiving. hey, people do weird stuff when they love someone…but let’s stick to topic.
does anyone here know of anyone who is like that? a vegetarian that cannot sit at the same table as one who has meat on their plate, or even worse, doesn’t allow them to keep it in the house?
November 14, 2004 at 10:26 pm #70022RigorMortis
MemberAh yes, thanks for reminding me, I forgot the other stupid excuse of “i’m saving animals by not eating meat” Well what about saving plants? When did u vegeterians flip a coin and decide animals are more important and need saving. Even animals eat meat, heck some will even eat humans if given the chance. I’m not saying let’s start saving plants, I eat both meat and veggies. I’m just saying come back with a better excuse, one that actually makes sense for a change. I actually know somebody who doesn’t pick an apple off a tree cuz he doesn’t wanna ‘hurt’ the tree. But he’ll eat an apple bought from a fruit stand because “the damage is already done.” I can always count on him for comic relief ๐ But to be totally fair, I also know quite a few people who admit taking great pleasure in eating meat because of some bad experience they’ve had with an animal earlier in their life. I know this one guy, he used to be a bullfighter back in south america. He was attacked by a bull once, he tells me he makes sure his wife prepares him a nice bloody juicy steak every so often. Kinda morbid if u ask me, but I guess stupid excuses run on both side of the fences. I’ve been biting by dogs on several occasions, scratched by many cats. Maybe I need to eat at an asian restaurant and get some revenge ๐ I’ve also fallen from from a tree and landed in a thorny bush, so I probably need to eat more berries and lettuce or something. But nah, I think I’ll just keep eating everything on my plate, and use all my teeth they way they are supposed to be used. chomp chomp ๐

ParticipantWow…”get a better chef” …that has to be the singularly most arrogant, stupid, narrow minded and self important thing I’ve ever heard when talking about vegetarianism. You were talking about stupid reasoning, well, thank you for giving one of your own. Seems I’ll have to give up my crown when it comes to being the most insulting person on BBB…damn.
You know, I could have a pork chop cooked every single way that a pork chop could be cooked, and I’d bet you $10 that I still wouldn’t be able to choke the thing down. My sister doesn’t like strawberries. I cannot fathom why she wouldn’t like them but, hey, to each his own. People dislike all sorts and shapes of things, but is it really so hard to fathom in that pea sized mind of yours that someone may not like something meat related? Hell, I don’t nessisarily like the idea of eating seal eyes, but some people do. I couldn’t stomach eating a sheeps bladder, and yet there’s haggas. People have preferences, that’s why they ask “How would you like that cooked” when you order a steak.
“Get a better chef” Gah. Look kid, you can’t understand why someone would choose to not eat meat. I cant understand a lot of things. I can’t understand why someone would choose to punch 10+ holes in their head then stretch them out until you can stick a crayola marker through them. I can’t understand why someone would choose to live with 15 cats and call them all “baby”. I can’t understand why someone would choose to slander the english language in favor of “quicker and easier” typing even though it makes them look uneducated and foolish. I can’t understand why someone would choose to date their cousin. I can’t understand why someone would choose to butter toast, then put jelly on it. I can’t understand why someone would choose to vote for Bush. I can’t fathom why people would choose to do a lot fo things, and that doesn’t mean I have to agree with them either, but it does mean that when arguing my case, it is my personal responsibility to be as calm, collected, logical and falacy free as possible so not to come off as a complete buffoon. You should try it sometime.
The Asian Restaurant bit was a shame as well but *shrug* i’ve heard worse and I’m sure someone else will go at you for that one later on.November 15, 2004 at 2:11 am #70032Quiksilver

Not at all. Asians ate a staple diet of rice for hundreds of years. Its very healthy.
I was talking about eating the same thing every day…you know what I mean? There isn’t one food that has every nutrient needed to survive…
-quikNovember 15, 2004 at 2:26 am #70012RabidKitten
ParticipantTrue that, the body does need more than one thing to survive, as we’ve all learned in school, but there are different food pyramids in accordance to where you are in the world as well.
Mediteranian Pyramid
Vegitarian Pyramid
Latin American Pyramid
I’m sure while he just eats that at lunch, that he eats other things during the day or at home *shrug* The American food pyramid isn’t the only one in existance, so there -are- other ways to get the neutrients that ones body needs to function. -
