I was reading about the idea for a BBB blog-ring and I have decided that I would like to get back into the blog scene. After looking around, I have found that there are tons of blogging sites compared to when I left, and I don’t want to go around making 30 accounts to find what is best. I am looking for something that is both highly custimizable but also easy to use (and of course, free). Share your opinions, pros, cons, etc.
- MSN Spaces
Pro: easy-to-use, nice features, tight integration with MSN Messenger, free.
Con: Not highly customizable (depends on how you define customizable).
- Blogger
Pro: Owned by Google (and everything they touch turns to gold, right?), free (with ads) or you can remove ads for a nominal charge. Highly customizable.
- TypePad
Pro: easy-to-use, highly configurable.
Con: not free.
- LiveJournal
Pro: easy-to-use, decent configuration options, free.
- MovableType
Pro: Highly configurable.
Con: requires you to get a web host and can be difficult to setup.
- WordPress
Competitor to MovableType with roughly the same features.
Xanga.com – pretty newb, but IMO, so is MSN Spaces.
Yahoo! 360° – on an invitation basis, but looks very nice imo.I highly prefer Blogger. It’s very easy to use, and also very flexible, IMHO. And Jeff, I don’t see any ads, unless you consider the search bar at the top an advertisement. :-/ Really, I don’t mind the small bar at the top of my blog (Actually, I kind of like it). Or at least, it’s not as bad as those huge animated banner ads.
I’ve seen some sites with MovableType, and it looks pretty cool too. I’ve never used it, but I guess if you want to go through the trouble of setting up, then you might like that too.
DiaryX Pretty darn customizable, can pw lock the entire journal or just certain entries. Statistics, custom templates, no on screen adds (could have a popup at times…but I couldn’t tell for sure), required to have a link back to the host site, forums for troubleshooting, Plus memberships available (Not nesissary), not widely known but I like it…
http://www.bubbler.com It’s new. I used to use it but I did something stupid accidentally and they deleted my account. It was my fault. You can download a tool and it’s VERY easy to use.

uses WordPress software, free with adsactually, i think the best option is to just make your own and use cutenews 🙂 dosn’t require a mysql database. just php support and ftp 🙂 highy customizable! you can do whatever you want with it really. there is no restrictions! 😀

Um, getting back to the topic at hand…
I ran across a good Blog Primer at Sitepoint. It covers they why, the how and provides good advice for getting started with your own blog.
since i’m thinking about starting this blogging thing… after looking through some of the blog sites out there, i think i’m just gonna say screw the other services and i’ll do my own. i can just write my own entries and post them, without having some site do it for me. i’m not sure exactly how i wanna set it up so it’ll be the easiest, but i’m not gonna worry about that.
I’ve considered doing the same, but I find most of the people I know reside in these hosted blogging communities.
So it’s much easier for me to keep touch with their blogs (and vice versa) if I just join as well. (opposed to blogging on a completely foreign site)I’ve been using Livejournal.com for a good 2-3 years now.
Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t blog. I’ve tried doing the Xanga thing about 2 years ago, and I just wasn’t feeling it.
I like to write. Yes, you heard (read) correctly, I said WRITE. I like to get my feelings out, and even typing it on the computer doesn’t do it for me. And I don’t like the idea of posting it online so others can read about it. I am aware that you can put a password on it, so only your eyes can read it, but then again, there is always some clever hacker who can somehow get in. And besides, I don’t want to take the risk of someone reading it, knowing I’ve *swooned* or bitched them out. That’s just my opinion though.
It actually makes me feel better to write it out, by hand, in a journal. And I know that it is safe from nosy eyes, because I keep it locked in a little safe, where nobody but myself knows the combination. And it’s also in my closet. If you’ve ever seen my closet, that is a task in itself trying to get in there!
When I did Xanga, it was a pain in my butt. I really didn’t have a lot of time to sit and figure out how to customize it.
So yeah, happy blogging. Try writing sometime, it might make you feel a whole lot better, if that is what you are aiming to do.
