Let me revide my previous statement: I have no problem with respectable IM software companies profiting because we link to them (ala YTK, etc), but I DO have a problem with crappy software companies with crappy software trying to make money here, which is why I repeatedly said to check out the software first before you anything. If it’s either a stupid, bad program or it’s spyware infested, I don’t want anything to do with it.
July 24, 2007 at 11:48 pm #162900detn8rParticipantSpike, are you suggesting which illegal and immoral programs we are going to allow published on these forums and which we are not?
As a forum (and collectively) we are going to have to establish some type of grounds. The type of people who use webcam recorders 9 times out of 10 have immoral use for actually recording what they are seeing. BUT, are we here to govern this? There are plenty of posts out there that request webcam recorders, and after several people reply about how wrong it is, there is always someone that posts a answer that the original author was looking for. Some of these answers include programs that state specifically that they record webcams. And then there are others (like SnagIt) which don’t.
I don’t want to try and run a website that staff contradicts one another on rules and regulations, so I want to establish a ground rule now. Are we going to allow people to ask for webcam recording software? Are we going to allow people to answer these questions with programs that don’t have a specific use (like SnagIt)?
The whole part about programs costing money is a bull**** topic. Webcam Simulator and SnagIt both cost money, and both do exactly the same thing. Both are being advertised on Bigblueball. Debating the integrity of the program is therefore pointless. There isn’t a need to further discuss that.
Until we get a links directory up and running, all of us have to live with others posting about programs etc in the forums as a means of driving people to try their products out.
July 26, 2007 at 2:11 am #162907SpikeMemberI think you misunderstand me when I’m talking about about types of software. I was saying that I won’t allow spyware-ridden crap to be blatantly advertised here, even if it does relate to IM, whereas I don’t have a problem with YTK or any of that. I don’t care if we advertise webcam recording software, just so long as it’s not a crap program.
What’s the big deal with webcam recording software anyway, or am I missing the point? So what if people want to use their webcams as video recorders? Or is there another use I’m not aware of?

If someone is going to post a program bundled with adware or spyware, I don’t see an issue with that. So long as someone mentions that it comes with it, it usually comes separate, meaning it can be removed and the original program can continue to be used regularly. I highly, highly doubt any programmer is going to bundle spyware OR adware for that matter with a program that you already have to pay for.
1) There is no issue with allowing programs that come bundled with crapware, so long as there is a warning.
2) There is no issue with allowing programs that cost money. If it’s relevant, it stays.
3) If someone registers multiple accounts to promote the thread, use your own judgment. If they’ve made them selves sound stupid, just delete the posts. If they outline what the product does, or provide links to surveys etc outlining that other websites rate it high — than so be it.
4) If someone is posting about a program that you feel uncomfortable with, for what ever reason, move it to the Review Requested forum. There, we collectively can look at the thread and determine what to do next.Spike wrote:What’s the big deal with webcam recording software anyway, or am I missing the point? July 26, 2007 at 3:38 am #162896Jeff HesterKeymasterThis has been a healthy discussion. I think we agree that if there is any doubts about the suitability of a program, it can be discussed here.
As for webcam recording software, there’s nothing inherently wrong with it. I’ve used webcam recording software, and I think that presuming that “most” people use it for something evil is, well, presumptuous.
Anyhow, I appreciate everyone sharing their views and opinions. I know everyone means well and wants the best for the site, and I’m happy to see the team sort these things out.
