I switch between Windows Media Player 9 (I like the auto-playlist features) and WinAmp 3 (which AudioTracker supports…see my signature). After reading the posts here, I’m inclined to re-think WinAmp 3 and check out v2.91; sounds like it’s a little easier on the resources.
Persoinally I use STP (SysTrayplayer) it just sits in the sytray so uses almost no resources. it uses 4.5 megs of memory when playing where as Winamp 2.91 without a skin uses 6.7 just to sit there.
Systray isn’t sknable but then it doesn’t really have a gui. But Why would I want to look at an audio player? The point of music is to either relax to or to listen to whilst doing something else. Even with winamp I minimise it to systray.
The only downside is that STP is old and only supports MP3’s and wavs. It can be found, along with it’s source code, at http://www.netean.com/stp/.
Another MP3 player which has excellent sound quality is Apollo, available from http://www.hut.fi/~hylinen/apollo/. Appolos slogan applies to both these players, “Quality isn’t skinnable”
I use iTunes for Mac. It is the best player out there for managing your collection, ripping, burning and playing. It’s integration with the iPod is just awesome and makes the combo the only way you want to work.
I can only hope when ITunes for Windows is released later this year, Windows users can appreciate the why Mac software gets the high marks it does.
BS player is okay for customizing the codecs you wish to use to play a file. Windows media player 9 is horrible. If I run that program and navigater explorer on networked mapped files (I have all my media stored on a server in my apartment) it decides to take up all the resources of the machine. Microsoft says it takes less memory, but that means crap when 98% of your processor is dedicated to playing a MP3! I
Another problem with WMP9: Its simplification. If i go full screen to watch a movie, it does not realize that I just want to watch the movie unless i click the picture. It also defaults to 100% size whenever you start or change from full to console. These are annoying things that should not exist in properly tested software. I know MS is trying to make MP a part of the OS, but at least make it function like simple utilities that people make in there spare time in their dorm rooms. Oh, btw, you can’t uninstall it. So if it sucks with your hardware (flashing screens, picture that looks like your LCD is cracked, music that goes screech) you are screwed.
I like MS WMP.. it can manage my music ‘library’ nd i like hving album art of the songs. I can hve full information of a song nd its album.
I only use WMP9, mostly because I’m too lazy to find something better, the other reason is that the two radio stations that I listen to in my car have live streams for WMP and I don’t know if other players can handle that too (again, too lazy to find out).
The main problem I have with WMP is that it’s too big. When you apply a skin to try and make it take up less of your screen, there’s almost always that stupid visualisation window. The few skins that I’ve found that don’t have that are either not as easy to use as I want them to be, or they’re just too darned small.
There’s one skin that looks like a Kenwood car stereo, which looks really nice, but it’s not resizable and takes up way too much space.I used to have WinAmp installed on my previous PC, but I found the default skin annoying with all those tiny buttons. Showing your current song in signatures is cool, but I doubt people want to know what I’m listening to… (the Shrek soundtrack right now, in case you’re wondering ;))
i use nero media player, it’s great cause the movies or songs never get cut off or stall, and it’s user friendly:cool:
I usually use Winamp 5.1 – I presume it wasn’t out when the majority of these posts were made- i like it it ‘cos of the wide choice of skins avaliable
Where is iTunes for Windows? I have iTunes for my audio needs and with this sweet plugin i got from aquasoft it looks like the mac version and does soo many things heres a list of what the plugin does.
1. Skinning the titlebar.
2. Making multimedia keys when the iTunes window is not active (tested with an HP keyboard only).
3. Copying the current song name to the clipboard when you start listening to a song.
4. Making iTunes Always-On-Top when in Mini-Mode.
5. Always make iTunes Always-On-Top.
6. Finding the lyrics of the currently playing song
7. Make programs recognize iTunes as Winamp. all the programs that read the current song name, etc.
8. the Find Lyrics menu now opens EvilLyrics. great program! get it here.
9. Make ObjectBar recognize iTunes’s menu
10. Create a file called CurrentSong.txt in the iTunes folder that will hold information about the current track
11. Change the window title to “Artist – Song – iTunes”You can pick up the plugin from http://www.aqua-soft.org 😉
I prefer Winamp 2.91 for playing audio files and Windows Media Player 6 to play movies. I have WMP 7….but that takes longer to load, so I use 6 instead.
Quick question….I’m still using RealPlayer 8. Should I upgrade to RealOne Player, because I can still basically play all the real media files on the net. Does the RealOne Player take longer to load?…and take up more space?
