I just use it because all my friends on it… they use AOL as their ISP that’s why… otherwise I would use MSN Messenger.
After you hack it then use DeadAIM, it’s not so bad.Definetly AIM sucks big time, AOL should put some brains into it to make it better, and they should mae it more pleasent to the eyes it’s way too ugly rigth now. So to me it’s MSN and Y! all the way

I use it because all of my friends use it. I had installed MSN Messenger a long time ago, but only 1-2 friends used it so I just deleted it after a while. The same goes for Yahoo Instant Messenger.

whats so bad about it, it works. you can chat with your friends, what more do you want out of it? i dont see anything wrong with AIM

I use AIM for voice chatting, because yahoo doesnt have it. And I can’t get it to work with MSN.
I use Trillian nowadays for all other messengers, but still use AIM because Trillian doesnt support voice. Can’t those people at Cerulean Studios get voice chat into Trillian already?…geez
Basically it’s the most popular of all messengers. You don’t see Yahoo or MSN taking out commercials advertising their messengers. That’s why everyone uses it, popularity.
I have the same friends on both yahoo and msn and they all log on to AIM and hardly the others so it’s a cycle that goes on and on.
Sometimes it’s the simplest of things that appeal most to people.
And you also have to consider that for awhile AOL was considered a great service when it first came out, That makes it known for simplicity and the “great” service it had at the time. Then came along Yahoo! and MSN. They both came after it and both dont have Internet ad’s and TV ad’s everywhere. And like people above said, most are too lazy too change when they have already settled into one messenger. I also think people might like it more since unlike MSN, you dont need your email.
I guess alot of it is based on who starts out first, regardless of the service quality at the currenty time and how user friendly the software is.
Well, ICQ started before all of them, but its practically died out, which is unfortunate… I loved it back in the day, but its just bad now… I do still prefer the idea of it and the way it functions, but… *sigh* its gone way downhill
icq was so complicated though, at least i thought. i mean you get assigned a number to identify you. aol just took icq and made it more user friendly with aim.
I used it just fine when I’d just been using computers for a week… so hey… can’t be that complicated. User friendly is good, but not when you sacrifice quality

I thought yahoo messenger had voice? Maybe I’m confusing it with the ability to call to an actual land line?
I think the reason AIM is the most popular is because of the nature of its consumers in general. Most people who use one form of IM program are not computer gurus (as I’m sure most of the people on this forum are) and prefer to stick with what works. Of course, since AOL was the first program out, it was popular with the little kiddies (back in 95, 96) and it was also the ISP which the parents used. ICQ required an extra download, something which may have warded off the parents and kids because of the extra effort (as easy as it may seem to you to install a simple chat program). Though I do agree MSN and Yahoo have better features than AIM, most of the community haven’t used them (they’re starting to now)….things like video and audio were pretty bad and generally not worth using. It’s along the same lines of why everyone uses DeadAIM, while there are similar if not better programs out there for free.

I use AIM as my primary IM program because most of my friends use it. I also use MSN and Yahoo! Messenger but I don’t use them as often because not many people that I know use those IM programs. I’ve used DeadAIM and AIMutation for cloning since my brother uses my PC sometimes.
