Months ago my daughter downloaded dead aim to my computer. After seeing these forum notes about there being a fee for it, I find myself wondering where she got it, she wouldn’t have any way to pay for it herself. A few days later a box started popping up on my screen every time I opened AIM, that says “welcome to dead aim” at the top, and then to enter my email address and serial number. The box won’t go away unless I enter a serial number that I don’t have, so it’s there constantly. I tried upgrading to the most recent version (twice), and the box goes away for a few days and then suddently it just comes back! How can I get this to go away? I know she’s not reinstalling it, because she’s been out of town! Does anyone have any suggestions?

OK, there are two things that I can think of for you to do at the moment, first do a search for files with anything with the words DeadAIM in them, if that turns up anything other than temporary internet files, delete them. Restart your computer, or if you are using Windows XP, just log off and back on(make sure that you don’t just press swich users, be sure to log off fully). If the popup still popus up, there is one other thing you can do, go to start–>run–> and type “Regedit” without the quotes, a menue will popup, and press ctrl-f, or edit–> find, and search for anything there with DeadAIM in them. Delete every thing that has DeadAIM in it.

Uh, I just uninstalled it. Start –> Settings –> Control Panel –> Add/Remove Programs.

Long, yes, stupid, No.
BTW – blkcat1010 – I’m pretty sure this version of DeadAIM is illegal as it costs $5 for the legal ver.

so the little promt is there to NOT LET U GET A FREE VERSIONWell, sort of. It’s there to validate your copy of DeadAIM, but it comes up every so often because there seems to be a flaw in DeadAIM that makes it ‘forget’ your serial. You ‘should’ only have to enter your serial once.
August 24, 2003 at 10:58 am #56624CharlesMemberI had this problem and at first I had thought it was the encryption certificates, and removed them and still had the problem. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, it didn’t work. I ended up going back to 3.x.x whatever it is. It isn’t much different, works fine for me, and 4 had too much overhead. Between the registration and the new tabbed opts. I was out.

Taking into consideration it was downloaded months ago, probably not.

Sorry, I didn’t realize you don’t need to enter registration info for earlier DeadAIM versions. Wake up DJ! Yes yes yes, ok… coffeeeeee.

Dennis servers and messing up somewhere along the way which would make Dead AIM to ask again, you could probably use a firewall and block all contact with the J. Dennis IP range. Not sure if this would work, it might only just make it ask more. It is worth a try though. You would need to have an advanced firewall such as Zone Alarm Pro, and you would need to set it to block the ip range 212.158.0.0 to 212.158.255.255 I did this with Microsoft as well so they do not track my activity. If it works, it will never ask for it again and be happy with what it has.
Edit: But wait…..couldn’t that be considered spyware? I wonder what J.Dennis is really up to.
September 8, 2003 at 11:27 pm #56638fearthis4life14MemberI had the same stupid problem my advice is to get the last version that did not require registration AKA deadaim v.3. but you need to get rid of that window so here is the tricky part theres a file called DeadAIM.ocm its in C:programs filesAIM and delete this file because its the one that runs the stupid window the bad side of it is that it also runs deadaim, now because deadaim combines files with AIM on download it also cannot run AIM because AIM is missing files duh! so u have download AIM over but dont delete AIM totally unless you wanna lose all ur settings and ur screen name ( That is if u can delete AIM i couldnt for some reason most likely cuase i was missing files) . just download AIM again and u should have everything u had. I WAS DUMB ENOUGH TO TRY AND GET IT FOR FREE, I ALSO WAS DUMB ENOUGH TO DELETE THE FILE THAT HAD THE SERIAL NUMBER ON IT, DONT BE A DUMBASS AND TRY AND GET IT FOR FREE AGAIN. JUST PAY THE MEANINGLESS 5 DOLLARS!!!!! IM me if u have any problems Fearthis4life14 or FearThis4life604:)
