MemberI am having trouble with the Voice Chat when using the Yahoo Messenger's Instant Messaging. I am running Windows XP Home with SP-2, and have 256 MB RAM and 80 GB hard drive space. I have even reformatted my hard drive and installed everything from scratch but I still get the same problem. I am using a 56 Kbps dialup connection for the Web. The problem is as follows:
When I “Invite a contact to enable voice chat,” I get the status line message saying: “Connecting to audio server, please wait….” Then after a few seconds, I get a small pop-up window with the message: “Voice server is currently unavailable.”
I run the Audio Setup Wizard, and all steps pass OK except Step 4 of 5: Connection. In this step 4 of 5, it says “The wizard could not connect to Yahoo Voice chat. The wizard successfully connected to Net2Phone.”
I have searched my computer thoroughly and Net2Phone is not to be found anywhere in my computer! I am totally lost as to why the Wizard is connecting to Net2Phone (who is Net2Phone!), and if this is the reason why my Voice chat is not working and is not finding the Voice server!
I have even turned OFF the XP's Firewall and deactivated Zone Alarm, but the problem remains the same!I sure would appreciate greatly any help/suggestion you may give me on how I can solve this problem and use the Voice chat feature.
Thank you so much.

MemberNet2Phone is internet telephony.. however it charges users for this service.
What version of Y!M are you using?

MemberI did some reseach on Net2Phone and it has been packaged with ad/spyware so I would suggest running your favorite spyware removal program either way.

MemberHi PK.
I assume you just have ONE PC connected to the dialup ? (as distinct from a home network, 2 or more) ?Net2Phone – that is kind of an “internal” thing YM uses, it's just YM's way of saying it can partly connect you, but not wholly (for some reason).
The other question I'd ask, is how/where are you getting in to this voice chat ? I presume using YM version 6 you're just trying to open voice in an IM window ?
Have you tried “Invite to voice conference” option with a friend ?
… and/or, try getting the new YM 7 Beta – it can't be any worse for you, and while the Voice Conf part is unchanged, they have a completely new function – named “Call” – replacing the voice facility in IM mode.
Perhaps IT would work for you !?June 4, 2005 at 7:53 pm #123281pkorisa

MemberWhat do you mean try to remove it by running the spy/ad programs either way? My AdAware SE Personal and Spybot do not find it when I run them. Please tell me what else I can do to remove it.
I did a Search of my C Drive and I did not find any entry with the “Net2Phone” name!
ThanksJune 4, 2005 at 8:30 pm #123270ToeBee
MemberWell when I did the research it said Net2Phone was packaged with BarginBuddy. Maybe you can do a search for that. But I would think your spyware removal would have already found it if you had it.
Im pretty sure you have done this but have you tried a complete uninstall and install of Yahoo? Not only removing it from the add/remove but manually deleting the “Yahoo!” folder in “Program Files”?
Also I was wondering have you always had this problem? Did it just start recently? If so ANY new changes to your PC?

MemberI'm very surprised to find online references alleging that Net2Phone Comm Center installs BarginBuddy. I believe Net2Phone is a perfectly legitimate internet telephony program (as miGs says), which has been around since 1996.
I notice on their website they clearly state “.. no spyware, adware, or popups..” (for what THAT may be worth ;))
The BarginBuddy references I can find all appear to be around 2002/2003, so perhaps that no longer applies ?Anyway, Net2Phone is what Yahoo have long used to power their “Call Center”, so while available as a standalone program it is also built in to Yahoo Messenger, and I'm sure that THIS form of Net2Phone has no connection with anything underhand.

I think N2P has been within YM long before Beta version 7 too … I just can't locate an earlier reference offhand. You are right about that, here's what I found.
[October 10, 2000] Net2Phone, Yahoo! Sign IP Voice Networking Agreement
Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO ), a leading global Internet communications, commerce and media company serving millions of people worldwide and Net2Phone Inc. (Nasdaq:NTOP ), a pre-eminent player in delivering voice services to IP networks, announced that Net2Phone will provide its voice-optimized IP network for voice transit throughout the Yahoo! network of properties.

MemberHI, Eagle_Kiwi,
Yes, it is my single PC that's getting to internet via the dial-up connection. I have just been trying to use the Voice Chat in the YM's IM window. And, i do not see “Invite to Voice Conference” anywhere in my YM 6.0's IM choices. I do see “Invite to Conference in the IM's Contact menu options but I have not tried that. And, if I can't get this thing resolved, i will try to download Ym Beta 7.
Thanks for your ideas.June 5, 2005 at 7:52 pm #123285pkorisa
MemberHI ToeBee, yes, I have completely deleted and reinstalled YM 6.0 several times. Hasn't helped any. I went to XP Home few months back – may be a year back. Before that I had Windows ME. I KNOW the Voice Chat in YM's IM was working just fine, and I just had not used it in my XP environment. So something in XP Home with SP-2 may be the cause of the problem, but I am not getting much help from Yahoo. Thanks.

MemberHI Eagle Kiwi, I cheked out both of the web pages that you referenced. they dealt with YM Beta 7 and Net2Phone. It looks like the Net2Phone's association with Yahoo in YM Beta 7's Call function is on a PAY basis, where as in YM 6.0 Voice Chat was a FREE conversation with other contacts. Are u saying that YM Beta 7 does NOT offer the FREE Vocie Chat anymore? Thanks.
