It looks like the Net2Phone's association with Yahoo in YM Beta 7's Call function is on a PAY basis, where as in YM 6.0 Voice Chat was a FREE conversation with other contacts. Are u saying that YM Beta 7 does NOT offer the FREE Vocie Chat anymore? Thanks. It is still free, you can use the call feature to place a computer to computer call. Pretty much like voice chat. You can also place a call to a regular phone, there is a charge for this service.

Member(UPDATE….)
I got to TALK – voice – with PK today! π π
He's now on YM 7 (and XP-Home), where we found the new CALL function works fine for him!
But the (old) Voice Chat (now only available via Voice CONFERENCE) still would not let him enable voice – coming up every time with “VOICE ERROR, Voice server currently unavailable”.He's tried it with both his firewalls closed… and also tried 2 alternative settings to the standard “NO Proxies” in Preferences/Connections, but all to no avail…
…So far! π
We Will Overcome …. somehow, I hope.Any useful suggestions from anyone else ?

MemberIm not sure what else to do. I found this help page about configure your firewall or proxy server. But if he already tried it with no firewall I guess it doesnt matter…

MemberThanks for that anyway, Toebee. π (BTW, Nice website you have there, mate!)
Having now at least SPOKEN with PK – and having known others with similar problem in the past – I'm DETERMINED to settle this one!Firstly, I was very surprised to find googling Voice server currently unavailable found NOTHING (and ditto on other good search engines).
I conclude that this is due to this exact wording being new on Yahoo, but I instead found Yahoo Help for a “similar” phrase h e r e (“US”version*).
PK, I'm sure that THAT link must get to the heart of your problem!! As a benchmark (as MY voice chat works fine) I‘ve run their suggested tests as follows:
-1- (Firewall..) – We've verified PK has YM set to “no proxies”, so no problem here.
-2- Try this test simply opens a Yahoo page with some technical info – which oddly breaks off mid-sentence, after “…(or other intrusion d ” !!
-3- “telnet vc.yahoo.com 5000” – This instantly pops up window titled “Telnet – vc.yahoo.com” as described, with “Connecting to vc.yahoo.com…” in it. Nothing else happens, and window vanishes after about 30sec.
SO, PK… I know you are excellent at following clear instructions π so try this, and lets see if it's -2- or -3- where you part company from all us happy voice chatters! π
* Yahoo Help have a similar page here (“AU”version) with just very slightly different wording. I do WISH they would keep their worldwide act together.
Mr Yahoo, please defrag your worldwide websites  !June 7, 2005 at 4:05 am #123275imported_Ven0m
MemberSounds to me that something is messing up with the connection, do you have the window's firewall turned off? what programs are running besides yahoo?

Mr Yahoo, please defrag your worldwide websites  !Hi Ian, I checked out Items 2 and 3. My computer behaved exactly the way you have described above. Item 2 test displayed the Yahoo page on Ports used but cutoff after the 1st line of the second para as you have suggested. Item 3 displayed the same screen you ahve described and automatically dissapeared after a few seconds.
Strange in deed. Just a thought — could my ISP be doing anyhting to cause this problem???June 7, 2005 at 6:00 pm #123288pkorisa

I have also tried with no other programs ruuning except items in the systems tray like MS MOney, Palm Organizer, USB Control, Roxio, etc.

That's would most likely be a yes. But it depends if your dial-up service is the type that tends to disconnect you a lot or has very poor quality such as slowness and lag. That may be the whole cause of why it won't let you connect to voice chat.June 9, 2005 at 2:13 am #123280Eagle_Kiwi
MemberUsing the YM-7 Beta CALL function, PK and I can exchange voice messages easily – with excellent voice quality both ways.
We can even talk directly in CALL – but while I hear HIM perfectly, HE hears ME rather patchy/broken. As I have no such problem talking to others, I figure this must be some sort of lag with the “inward” at his end.
(ADDED LATER: We've now remedied that! Turned out PK's mic was UNMuted, which caused bad feedback/echo in Call mode – now muted, now good quality both directions π )But he still cannot connect for voice (in either direction) under Voice Chat mode (under “More Actions – Invite to Conference”) even while I'm in there talking easily with 2 or 3 other friends.
Here's the full text he gets when using the (old!?) Y! Audio Setup Wizard (which, BTW, seems to me superior to the one they have now tucked away under Preferences in the Beta version):
Wizard could not connect to Yahoo voice chat. The wizard successfully connected to Net2Phone. It appears that ther are problems amking a connection between your ISP and Yahoo Voice chat. Please make sure that you are NOT behind a firewall that prevents TCP connections on Port 5001 and UDP 5055
Neither of us have any idea what all this TCP/UDP stuff is! But he's had no change even with his ZoneAlarm AND his XP firewall both disabled.
Here also is a similar(?) quote from a Yahoo test page, FWIW:
Information for Network Security Administrators:
Voice chat data packets are sent by this server using both TCP and UDP. TCP packets that are sent to a user's computer originate from source ports 5000 and 5001. UDP packets that are sent to a user's computer originate from source port 5000 and are addressed to a port in the range 5000-5010 on the user's computer.
Depending on the configuration of your firewall (or other intrusion d…. {no more available!}We're also looking at a section called Detecting Ports Blocked by Your ISP on Steve Gibson's excellent http://www.grc.com site, but it's rather heavy going !
PK plans to call his ISP anyway – for guidance (hmmm, HOPEfully π ) – but I wonder if any expert in HERE can offer further suggestions ?

Ian, I think we may have the solution. First though, I don't know what is UDP, but I know TCP — stands for TeleCommunication Protocol, and I am sure this is the protocol that is used by most ISPs to make the internet connection. And Port 5001 is used for the Voice Chat under TCP.
Well, here is what my ISP sant me just now( 1:30 PM, June 9 my time):“Because of the severe security vulnerability to our servers by hackers, the port 5001 can not be opened up on our firewall equipment. This is unfortunate for that Voice chat program, but we are faced with so many hacking and intrusion attempts from throughout the world, that this port can not be opened up for traffic.”
SO, LOOKS LIEK MY ISP HAS BLOCKED PORT 5001, AND THUS NO VOICE CHAT!
Hopefully that answers that. But then, what PORT is our CALL feture of Ver 7 is using because we can ceratinly chat!!!
Hope this helps. Ofcourse, we invite others' thinking on thsi issue.
