December 24, 2003 at 8:06 pm #87067restless311MemberThis happens a lot with Windows 98 and ME. Get XP if you can.
Windows 98,ME is like a fat guy(98,ME) on a tricycle(DOS). Crashes a lot.

December 26, 2003 at 9:43 am #87063DavidParticipantAlso check that you have enough System RAM and Video RAM.

December 26, 2003 at 4:38 pm #87061Jeff HesterKeymasterGive us some details and maybe someone with a similar configuration can help. Specifically, the make and model of your webcam and the exact version of Yahoo! Messenger, along with any error messages that are displayed. It would also be good to know your firewall/router setup.
Without this basic information it’s almost impossible to diagnose what could be going wrong. Generally speaking, webcams DO work with Yahoo Messenger; so what you’re experiencing is somewhat unusual. Don’t expect us to be able to help without provided detailed information.
January 1, 2004 at 5:48 pm #87072JoeMaloneMemberI’m experiencing the same problem. It never used to happen before but as soon as I activate my cam, my PC does a hard crash and I have to reboot manually. No error messages.
High Spec PC
XP Pro
Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 (lastest drivers installed)
Yahoo Messenger (5, 6, 0, 1356)I even tried closing all background programs but still no luck. This is driving me mad…I can’t believe I can’t fix it! Argh!
January 7, 2004 at 2:08 pm #87074t8ballMemberI know this problem well as I also have had and now again do have it. It’s because you’ve done a windows update. Something in the update crashes the Yahoo! Messenger whenever you attempt to use the webcam. You can do a system restore to a point before you updated or have to do a clean install of XP. This has fixed the problem before. Do not attempt to uninstall all updates as this won’t work. You MUST restore to a point before the updates were put into the registery. If anyone has any better ideas I’d love to hear them.
January 7, 2004 at 8:02 pm #87073JoeMaloneMemberStrangely enough, I suspected such a thing…most likely some windows security update. I don’t really want o back up that far….hmmm. Wish there was a better way!
January 27, 2004 at 12:36 am #87075asaccinParticipantHad the same problem, here’s the fix:
1. Shut down Yahoo! Messenger if it is currently running.
2. From the Windows Start menu at the left bottom of your screen, click
“Run.”3. From the input area, type regedit and press “Enter.” The registry
editor application should open.4. On the left side, expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder (or key), then
expand the Software folder under it and select “Yahoo.”5. If there is a Webcam folder, go to the next step. If there is no
Webcam below the Yahoo folder, go to the Edit menu and click New, Key,
and type Webcam.6. Select the Webcam folder.
7. From the Edit menu click on New, DWORD Value, and type UseVFW
without any spaces.8. Double-click on the entry UseVFW and change the entry in Value data
to 1. Then click “OK.”9. Exit the Registry Editor application.

AsaccinJanuary 30, 2004 at 4:38 pm #87070UnSaKreDMemberI had this same problem when I ran windows xp pro.
I would encounter a serious lockup of yahoo messenger.
The problem was started when I updated my video card drivers.
I was running a Logitech Webcam and an ati raedon 7200.
I uninstalled both the drivers for webcam and video card, Yahoo Messenger, rebooted 2x
reinstalled last set of video card drivers(the set previous to the newest) then reinstalled the webcam drivers and Yahoo Messenger.
And it worked.February 16, 2004 at 2:43 am #87076MBairmanMemberThanks Asaccin! Your registry tip ended an afternoon of frustration. It worked as soon as I exited the registry. I have never been to this forum before, and I’ve never registered for one of these either. However, I was so happy that I just had to thank you. It works!
