Hello everyone. My boyfriend is having problems with his Yahoo messenger. It won’t even connect for him. He said he has taken down his firewall and everything. He has no idea why it wouldn’t be working. We normally use it for voice chat because Aim has bad quality for me. It has been like that for a while now. He said to me that he has even tried installing every other version of Yahoo Messenger to see if it connects but no luck.
Does anybody have any idea on what it could be? ๐
April 24, 2006 at 11:21 am #143047williamleeMemberYour Yahoo! Messenger connection information may be incorrect. Follow these steps to configure your connection:
Click the “Messenger” menu in Yahoo! Messenger and select “Connection Preferences.”
Enable the “Firewall with no proxies” option.
Select the correct Internet connection type and country from the pull-down menus.
Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the window.
Yahoo! Messenger will ask you if you want to sign in again with your new proxy settings. Click the “OK” button.
Enter your ID and password and click the “Sign In” button.
The above configuration works in most situations. (However, if you connect in this way, you won’t be able to use the Voice feature.) If this configuration doesn’t work, follow these steps:Click the “Messenger” menu in Yahoo! Messenger and select “Connection Preferences.”
Enable the “No network detection” option and then click the “OK” button at the bottom of the window.
Yahoo! Messenger will ask you if you want to sign in again with your new proxy settings. Click the “OK” button.
Enter your ID and password and click the “Sign In” button.
If none of the above options work, you’re probably behind a firewall or proxy server that requires you to enter its address. Follow these steps:Click the “Messenger” menu in Yahoo! Messenger and select “Connection Preferences.”
Enable the “Use proxies” option.
Enter your firewall and/or proxy server’s address and port number. Contact your network administrator (if you’re at work), or your Internet service provider (if you’re at home) to determine the correct firewall and proxy settings.
Click the “OK” button at the bottom of the window.
Yahoo! Messenger will ask you if you want to sign in with your new proxy settings. Click the “OK” button.
Enter your ID and password and click the “Sign In” button.
If you try all of the steps above and Yahoo! Messenger still can’t connect, contact your network administrator, ISP (Internet Service Provider), or the person who initially set up your computer to ensure that your firewall and/or proxy settings are correct.April 25, 2006 at 3:38 am #143040YunaMemberThank you for your help. My boyfriend tried doing all that but it still doesn’t work for him. It just doesn’t connect. It stays on ‘connecting’ and doesn’t ever connect up. Does anybody have any idea on what could be the problem? We even went on the Yahoo Messenger troubleshooting page and tried the stuff there, no luck. ๐
Any help would be highly appreciated!
April 25, 2006 at 5:24 am #143036Eagle_KiwiMemberHiya Cobber. ๐
That’s by no means an uncommon problem these days, but alas, I don’t know any clear answer. ๐I’d just suggest that while he can’t get ANY access he could at least try the web-based YM, which would …
-A- confirm that his ID/password are still ok – but I guess they will be, THAT is not his problem, it seems, and …
-B- at least be able to see/IM his online buddies that way, though it’s a poor substitute for the real thing.Do let us know if/when/how you two DO finally solve his problem.
P.S. Just reading William’s post again, Yuna, have you tried using the “No Proxies” setting in Preferences/Connection ? In fact, when deperate, try EACH of those 4 options in there !?April 25, 2006 at 7:48 am #143041YunaMemberThank you very much for the reply. It’s weird that it doesn’t want to work. He told me that sometimes it would work perfectly fine but at other times it would mess up completely. I sometimes have trouble with mine but it normally get mine working after a while. His has been like that for quite a while now. Hopefully this problem will sort itself out. We will keep trying to get it working. If we do figure out what’s wrong, I shall post here and tell you what we did. ๐
Haha, I just read your note down the bottom about the proxies after I posted. Yes, he has tried that numerous times. He said it didn’t help.
April 25, 2006 at 6:00 pm #143049MikeDMemberHi, Yuna,
I’m having the same problem your boyfriend is having. I only have my girlfriend on Messenger, so I couldn’t even chat with her. The link that Eagle_Kiwi worked wonders and “saved the day.”
I keep sending Yahoo e-mails about the problem. They send me links and suggestions, but nothing.
So now I’m using the web-based Messenger.
Hope things will still work out for your boyfriend.

April 25, 2006 at 7:15 pm #143037Eagle_KiwiMemberHere’s MikeD’s earlier thread on the same subject.
I’ve just posted another possible solution over there. Also, Yuna, please check the BBB Posting Guidelines, especially the section about “Colors and Fonts”.
(I’d love to make all MY posts in green, but I guess uniformity is for the good of us all!) ๐April 25, 2006 at 11:56 pm #143042YunaMemberUmm..I can’t change the colour of my font? Wow, that’s pretty strict. Sorry. I guess I should have read the rules..
April 26, 2006 at 12:35 am #143048williamleeMemberI was having a problem this morning with my YM messenger and installed right over the same version and it appeared to have resolved my problem. might be worth a try with your boyfriend.
also I can’t confirm this but I heard that if you go to the front page on Yahoo and scroll to the bottom where it shows Yahoo in different countries – click on Canada then go to messenger home page and download the version I heard from a friend is more secure then the US version. also maybe worth checking into.
April 26, 2006 at 6:33 am #143043YunaMemberThank you for the reply. I told my boyfriend and he said he’ll give it a try. I will post back here and tell you what happened afterwards. ๐
April 29, 2006 at 11:13 am #143044YunaMemberHere’s an update: My boyfriend tried doing all those different things but his Yahoo still isn’t working. He said it did connect up once but it logged off again straight away. He said he’ll keep trying to see if he can get it working again. *Fingers crossed*
April 29, 2006 at 11:22 am #143038Eagle_KiwiMemberHow depressing. ๐
I hope you can both still communicate ok via your MSN or AIM in the meantime though ?May 3, 2006 at 2:29 am #143034miGsMemberTry clearing the ypager log in the Messenger folder. (the messenger folder is usually located in C:/Program Files/Yahoo!/Messenger)
Then try to connect again.May 6, 2006 at 9:29 am #143045YunaMemberI’m sorry for taking a while to reply! I told Josh about the last suggestion and he tried it but no success. Thank you all for your help, hopefully it will work again soon enough. It’s probably a glitch or something because it seems to work on his brother’s lap top alright. It’s weird. I wish it would just work again. :crying:
May 6, 2006 at 8:55 pm #143039Eagle_KiwiMemberPity. I thought miGs’s suggestion was innovative, and promising.
Well, Yuna, I hope at least he’s now on the new version 7.5, which MAY have ironed out “his” problem.
