ParticipantAnyone who has loggged into their Yahoo! Messenger today must have received an immediate IM from the Yahoo! Messenger Team. What is this message? Well here it is:
Quote:Yahoo! Messenger will be performing scheduled maintenance on December 8 from 5.30 PM PST to 7.30 PM PST. During this period, you might experience problems when using Yahoo! Messenger.Amazingly now Yahoo! is giving notice of it’s scheduled upcoming maintenance to all users. This really is a rare occurrence, which i find excellent because they are actually giving us a 24-hour heads up. (Unlike their 9 hour upexpected downtime back in July…)
So tell us, what do you think of this? And do you think maybe Yahoo! felt the need to tell us due to last time’s problem? Let us know your opinion!
*IM is sent from id yahoomessengerteam* (messages started being sent around 6:00 pm Central Time, about 24 hours before upcoming maintenance)

MemberMy take is that it will be the end of YMSG protocol versions 10-14. with 8.0 and 8.1 now able to interop with WLM, LCS and IBM Lotus Sametalk, while the others can’t, they won’t stay around. YMSG version 16 is already on the horizon so the move sounds just about right to make at this time.

ParticipantI don’t know, they have clearly stated support for version 6.0 ends in jan 7th 2007 but support for 7 and 7.5 is not mentioned.
if they ended YMSG 10 – 13, that would kill 7 and 7.5 also
Whats even worst is the fact yahoo using the pm system to notify, first time since they started.

guess this is a good thing… considering I didn’t even get the message and haven’t been getting offline messages for MONTHS… think this will correct whatever problem is preventing my messages from getting sent?
yeah, I don’t think so either…

KeymasterI for one think it’s a great idea that they at least are communicating with their users and letting them know that there might be downtime. Unlike mushrooms, people do not like to be buried in BS and kept in the dark.

So tonight is when we may experience problems, although i’m hoping for no downtime!
Also did you try logging in and out to see if you would get the message? Since i know you were logged in before the messages starting getting sent to people right when they logged on.
And for anyone trying to log on and get this message today, i haven’t received it today, so maybe it was just yesterday…

ParticipantWell for me this maintenence will be actually..the 9th as it will be about 1:30am to 3:30am
However i think its to remove YMSG 12 and preparations for the web 2.0 intregation into yahoo mail and fix the “unknown buddies” loggin in and out problem.
I doubt it is to bring user rooms back as thats not really maintenence since it was disabled on purpose.
As for actually using the PM system for alerting users, what better way now to think about it to inform all yahoo users on any client or program they use as all use the same pm packets.

*blush* sorry, not too good on my dates, apparently – lol. I didn’t log in and out yesterday, but have seen nothing this morning or now. Hmmm.

That would kill Messenger 5.5 through 7.02 only. Messenger 7.5 uses YMSG version 14 not 13. Messenger 7.0 and 7.02 use YMSG 13.
I believe the only reason Yahoo! decided to put out 7.5 was to pass the time until 8.0 (and collectively the interop functionality) was ready for mainstream public use. Basically just a stepping stone to them to pacify their userbase.
YMSG 14 didn’t really offer anything at all over YMSG 13. If they’re willing to drop 12 and 13 so soon (which I do believe they will) 14’s game too. Just my opinion however. All we can do is speculate.

ParticipantI’ve been kicked off messenger with a kind little message saying:
So i would guess everyone is getting this message because then i’d think Yahoo! is just picking on me with this maintenance!
Well hopefully this doesn’t last too long and that i’ll be able to log onto messenger again. (hopefully only the time interval they gave…)

MemberI read on Cnet that Yahoo is undergoing a restructuring. I can see they need it badly, because although it’s nice of them to “notify” us of the downtime, it would have been nice to know before hand. As it stands now, I was logged on and in the middle of my session a notice came up about the “scheduled maintanence”. That’s not good. The other thing is… Other services schedule thier “maintanence” for off peak times, while yahoo thinks it’s ok to interrupt thier users during peak times. What nonsense!
So I quit the program. I don’t want yahoo contacting my client for whatever reason. Yahoo is teaching me not to trust them.
