ParticipantAside from when the power goes out, I never completely shutdown. Seems I heard once it takes more power to power up a computer than to leave it running for a long period of time, dunno if its true or not, but have never seen any real advantage to shutting down every night.

ParticipantAll depends on the criteria they were testing on. If it is purely based on say functionality I can see it beating out other applications. Personally I use Yahoo, MSN and AOL regularly. But I also have ICQ, Google and MyspaceIM installed for those times when I want/need them. IM clients is based entirely what you want and what your friends use. Doesn’t matter what one site says is best, if the people you talk to are not on it, it’s useless to you.

ParticipantFrom the US here. As far Northeast as you can go and still be considered in the US as a matter of fact, the land of Lobster and Snow hehehe.

ParticipantI am not doing the Vista upgrade either. Its not really worth it to me. Have seen demo machines in various store and I am just not overly impressed with it enough to justify throwing down $200 to upgrade. I like my Windows XP a lot and really see no reason to justify a change at this time. I know eventually I will have to, but for now I will be hanging on by my fingernails to my XP. As a side not, I am one of those users that doesn’t really care about “pretty” my XP is set up with the classic windows look, down to the taskbar, start menu and windows. Never really cared much for the Windows TeleTubby look

ParticipantI currently use Windows XP Pro with SP2, I will not be upgrading to Vista at all or ever, just to much BLAH for me. And despite what David said, lol, if it wasn’t for the fact of having to much RAM on my motherboard I would still be running Windows 98SE, I loved that operating system and really miss it a lot.
However, for pure stability, if I could get away with it, I would still be running Windows 3.11 with DOS 6.22. =)

ParticipantAs has been said, its like any other technological toy out there. Yeah dropping the price that much was a bit slimey, but meh, lots of other companies do worse things every day, except there product isn’t zomgWTFbbqPWNu popular. I have a basic cell phone that I use, let’s me make phone calls and basic text messages, hell it isn’t even a camera phone, and it works fine for me. You want the latest and greatest you wind up paying for it. Personally I am not a big fan of the new cell phones coming out anyway, just more items to have to figure out and make sure you use enough to justify the cost of the phone and the service that comes with it. As far as most features of a cell phone go, meh, that is what I have a computer for.
But on topic, no I don’t think Apple’s move was all that unfair at all. Things like this happen all the time as I said before, just not with as popular of an item as the Iphone is.

ParticipantAnother good anti-spyware program I have found is SUPERAntiSpyware.com – AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware! tripped over this program one day when working on a friends well infested computer and adware and spybot were not able to handle the problems that were there. This little beauty took out everything they couldn’t handle and found things that they had missed.

ParticipantLittle late for this thread, but gonna jump on it anyway hehe. I am one of the hardware firewall users. Over the course of years I’ve tried several different software firewalls and never really cared for any of them, aside from restricting which programs get access to the internet. As a private, home computer user I don’t really see the need for a high end software firewall, this is only my opinion mind you, so I don’t use one. I do a lot of chatting, downloading, IRC etc. and have never had any issues at all. However, I do use a good antivirus as well as 3 different spyware programs, only one for real time tho. However, firewall options are a per user basis and as long as it makes you feel secure then it is causing no harm.

ParticipantAnyone who really pays attention to JK’s writing style can always tell when the editors have told her to add something. This was the case with the epilogue in the final book. The writing style for that was so completely different from the rest of the book/story that you can tell it was a forced add. Personally I was more than happy with the way the story played out, most of my own predictions coming true with it, ie. Snape & Lilly, Harry being a Horcrux and the death of Dunbledore. It was a fine story and I think in years to come it will develop its own core of followers along the lines of the Lord of the Ring’s readers as well as the die hard fans of Stephen R. Donaldson’s Covenant storyline.

ParticipantHere is a tip also, if after all software and hardware checks the problem is still there, goto external hardware checking. Check the phone cords you connect with, the shorter the better, try a different phone jack on the same number, if feasible try to connect directly to the main box outside your residence, if after all this and the problem is still occurring here is a trick I found rather helpful for dealing with dial up. Once you’ve exhausted all possibilities with your ISP, call you phone company, if it is the same company as ISP make your you get the landline technicians. Once you are talking to them, explain that you are getting static on your phone when you are making calls. Phone companies are not required to provide solid data transfer, BUT they are required to provide solid voice communications. Hope this helps you out.

ParticipantSome basic advice I can offer is to try it with another browser, providing Pogo supports other browsers fully. If you are trying to go in thru IE, the IE install may have become corrupt or otherwise damaged *gasp MS products never fail* and may need a repair or reinstall.

ParticipantAltho this has been resolved wanted to chime in a bit – always worth the extra cost to invest in a nice surge protector and make sure everything is connected to it, including phone and/or ethernet cords. Surprises me the number of people I’ve encountered that don’t connect speakers, Internet cords or other “small” items and pay the cost for it.

ParticipantYeah lost in WoW for 2 years, oye what a headache. Someone recommended it to me as a way to help quitting smoking, well not only did I continue dumping money into cigarettes I dumped $15 USD a month into WoW, lol, what a huge loss. Anywho, the game is uninstalled now, on the basis that to install WoW and BC and all the updates is more headache than it is worth, 3 months I’ve lived up to that, let’s see how long it lasts… lol

ParticipantIt’s funny how it is always the simple things that fixes an issue. Check marking the “sign in automatically” option did indeed bring back the “sign in as ‘username'” option. Thanks for the help 🙂
