Open a command propmt. CMD.EXE
Type msiexec /unregister and press Enter.
Type msiexec /regserver and press Enter.

I’m sorry this still gives me Error 1601. And how does doing a system restore get rid of the Error 1601 problem? MSN messenger 6 was never installed to my comp in the first place. Could my computer benefit from popping in the Windows XP CD and reinstalling the Windows Installer? Would my hard drive be wiped out? Anyone’s help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I had the same problem… Here is how I solved it. I did a System Restore… First go back a week…… If it still gives you the error, then go back a month. But remember that if you installed any other programs after your restore date you will have to reinstall them.
System Restore is located on Programs, Accessories, System Tools and is easy..
Hope this works

I’ve tried this method, but it doesn’t work, and I don’t really see how this would help, sorry.
I’m using windows XP home edition. Does anybody know where to go from here? I’ve tried the Windows Installer update but the OS is not compatible with my computer. Sorry I’m not really good with computers, can someone please find the correct Windows Installer Update for my computer?
I’ve also tried this solution proposed by Brian(2nd post from top) but i’m not sure how it works:
https://bigblueball.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3843&SearchTerms=error,1601Quote:quote:If so, try going to your Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services >> Windows Installer, right click and choose “Start”. Then rerun setup. If XP Home doesn’t have “Services” in its Control Panel, try typing “Services.msc” at the run or command prompt. But when I try it, it closes on me. It says “error 3: system cannot find the specific path, and I am unable to change the directory to where I saved the MSN messenger 6.0 xp installation file. Is there a way to change the directory, because I can’t delete any of the letters. Can someone please help me with this? Your help and time is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!
