Hi. sorry to revive this old topic for 5 years but I recently upgraded to AIM 8.0 and there’s no reliable way to block the annoying ads in AIM 8. Even with that old aim ad hack program failed to do the job of removing ads in AIM8.
I was looking at this topic in this other forum:
http://www.reddit.com/r/AskTechnology/comments/2lnp8k/how_do_i_remove_ads_from_aim_8/
but I didn’t seem to find the solution there.erpman1ParticipantYou can also find a lot of versions (old and new) of AIM from this FileHippo page:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_aim/history/
Whenever I want to update AIM to a new version, I always download the full AIM installer rather than use AIM’s autoupdate feature as it sometimes doesn’t update properly.Currently using AIM 7.3 on my XP SP3 computer and my mom’s Vista SP2 laptop and AIM 7.3 works fine.
erpman1ParticipantI thought AIM 7.3.6.4 is fully compatible with Windows 7 x64 edition. Isn’t that the latest version?
Don’t know why some of you guys want to use ancient versions of AIM under Win7.
Steve1209, try upgrading to AIM 7.3 on your Win7 computer and see how it fares out.

Open up this file in notepad, hit ctrl+f, and search for adcontainer. The first result is the one you want to change–change collapsed=false to collapsed=true.
Save and close the file.C:Program FilesAIM6servicesimAppveryour_versioncontentblbl.js
Open up this file in notepad, hit ctrl+f, and search for (“adContainer”).collapsed = false;. The first, and only, result is the one you want to change–change collapsed = false to collapsed = true.
Save and close the file. Fire up AIM to see if the ads are gone; if not, do the final step below. Those will only work with AIM 6.x versions. They do not apply to AIM 7.x versions as those JS files are no longer there.
Quote:These are mostly for older versions of AIM6 & Triton:
C:Program FilesAIM6servicesimAppveryour_versionresourcesen-USstrings.xml
Open up this file in notepad, hit ctrl+f and search for bl.aimadrotateinterval. Make the four lines look like this:
0
0
0Then search for bl.admagic and remove the numbers to make it look like this:
0
Save and close the file. That’s it for the buddy list!
only the strings.xml file is there in AIM versions from 7.0 to 7.2, Jon8RFC.
AIM version 7.3 and higher no longer contain the strings.xml file as I’ve checked myself. I think now the ads are “embedded” into the latest AIM program, much like it was with AIM version 5.9 and earlier.
So those tips to remove ads in AIM 6.0/7.0 no longer work with AIM 7.3 and greater.

I still use the tips Jon8RFC mentioned on latest AIM 6.8 build to block ads which are still effective.
btw, AIM 7.0.11.2 final is out. still requires a minimum of Win2k much like the 6.x versions.
erpman1Participanthopefully Yahoo IM 9.00.2162 will run correctly under Vista SP2 and Server 2008 SP2.
perhaps the “Enable IMVironments” option was taken out of build 2162, maybe because it isn’t working correctly in previous builds

2) Anytime I attempt to edit my buddy info, it has been cleared when I click “Edit Info.”That makes a total of four bugs caused by removing the buddy info ad. Any ideas, anyone?
hey guys. happy new year 2009! I haven’t been here in a while since I last posted in this forum thread.
oober and aatwoson, what version(s) of AOL IM were you using when you had this problem? I don’t seem to have the “edit buddy info” bugs with the current AOL IM I’ve been using which is 6.8.14.6. Try updating to the latest official release of AIM.

use it or dont.. makes no diff to me.. but not trustworthy?!?
weve been doing this since 2004 and have more awards from reputable software sites than i need to mention..yea, im the adhack author..
my, this is a blunt response from the creator of aim ad hack.
awards don’t mean a thing to me and some other people here. your program may be very good but it is serious overkill to some aim users who really want a simple solution into removing the ads from the AIM program without some unnecessary stuff involved. nothing more, nothing less.
Kudos to Jon8RFC for making AIM 5.x patches and the solutions to remove the ads in the AIM 6.x versions.
erpman1ParticipantVvWolverinevV;230768 wrote:This solution still works in AIM 6.8.8.4 🙂Note that the line 0 is missing from strings.xml, but this does not seem to affect the solution.
actually, VvWolverinevV, the “bl.adMagic” string is there in strings.xml of AIM 6.8.x. It’s just that “bl.adMagic” has been moved to near the top section of the strings.xml file which makes it easier to find. Some users might not see it right away and some others will find it there if you look carefully.
I’m currently using AIM 6.8.10.1 on my XP & Vista machines and I’ve looked at its string.xml file and found the “bl.adMagic” section near the top instead of in the middle.
