Memberif there is something in the first block of data on the drive, it could survive a drive format – when you overwrite a drive 35 times, it takes ages and ages, and ought to get rid of everything, but unless the drive is totally wiped clean, you might not have got rid of the malicious data
Iolo do a Drivescrubber as part of their System Mechanic (and there are other similar utilities available), this can totally wipe a drive – after that, you do need to be able to set the drive up again with a partition so you can install a system on it, and you can do this if the PC still has a floppy drive, and you have a floppy disk, and it is a boot disk from windows 95, 98 or Millennium, then you can set the BIOS to boot from A: and run FDISK to rewrite the data that is potentially corrupted, and then do a clean install of whatever version of windows you are using*another thing is, that you need to get your security set up, and up to date, before you go anywhere near any Instant Messenger, and also, you should change your login password, and NOT tick the box to ask for it to be remembered! this is mildly inconvenient, but there are programs that can access the stored password hash on your system, and it is only a matter of time for a determined stalker to decode the hash, and they can then steal your identity
*get someone who KNOWS what they are doing to help you with this, if what i have said above is all Greek to you – and good luck!

Memberi use 5.6 v1358 even though it no longer supports certain features such as file transfer
it is small, and does what i want it to do, and i can still get into chat rooms and use the webcam
and there are no nasty browser take-overs or terminate, stay-resident features
why did they have to turn it into the great bloated heap of nonsense it is today? 5.6 v1358 was perfectly good, and to avoid getting booted, you just replace the filter1.txt and set the filter to High, LOL
oh, and rename yupdater.exe to avoid seeing the nag-screen – mine is called yobdata LOLg88keeper

MemberI got Beta 8.1 and it was fine until today’s XP updates, so the microsoft developers have a major headache now, which is unlikely to be sorted any time soon, if it involves core system components – typical of microsoft to screw up their own beta with an automatic update to the OS they hadn’t checked with it first
