Memberwhy dont you go to Start —> Run and paste the path I mentioned earlier and then Okay. See if it brings up a folder with the files in it.

Memberyou’re missing a colon after C 🙂
Also… what file is it looking for when it asks for the disk? It should say somewhere on that dialog.
It’s my pleasure. I hope we can tackle the problem for you!

Memberdid you try typing “C:DRIVERSW9XAUDIO” in the path where it is trying to search for the CDROM? I know in windows 98 it gives you a choice to search floppy disk, cd-rom, windows update and path. try typing that. If not, then what file is it looking for? I have a windows 98 cd. We’ll see if it’s on that cd.

MemberYou mean a boot disk?
Why do you need the windows 98 cd?
I did notice it said “When the computer prompts you to install the manufacturer’s diskette during the startup of Windows 95/98, type C:DRIVERSW9XAUDIO.”
Is this where you are talking about needing the windows 98 cd?? You dont. just type that path they give.

MemberMost likely other software screwed something up. I had an IBM Thinkpad 600E a while ago. Basically all you need to do it reinstall the audio driver. I found the link to it here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=BBOD-3HJLDH
find on that page where it says “aftprw95.exe” and click that and agree and download and install.
Installation instructions (according to website)
- Start Windows 95/98.
- Extract the drivers onto the hard disk drive.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- Type C:DRIVERSW9XAUDIOSETUP and click OK.
- Click the Uninstall Crystal Drivers button at the pop-up window. (Do not click the Install Driver button.)
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, remove any diskette from the diskette drive and restart the computer.
- When the computer prompts you to install the manufacturer’s diskette during the startup of Windows 95/98, type C:DRIVERSW9XAUDIO.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.
If you need any further help or questions, let me know. Hope it works out!
P.S. Windows 2000 works great on the Thinkpads…. you should consider the upgrade 😉

MemberI wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it was read-only. Then again, what if it isn’t read-only? 😉
I signed up a few weeks ago, but I kind of forgot about it until I saw this thread again, so I mean it won’t be a big dissapointment to me if I dont get one.

MemberDont worry about the wireless capabilities built in, most laptops have slots that a wireless internet card can slide into. Those cards are only about 40 bucks new.
I’d have to disagree with the Dell option. Dell makes wonderful desktops, but i’m not particularly fond of Dell laptops, they’re not made as well, or at least in my experience.
I bought a Dell laptop off the web… refurbished… and 3 months later, I have a big red/yellow line down the right side of my screen. yes, something went wrong with the LCD and there was only a 30 day parts warranty. Oh and in the first 30 days, the hard drive was making a loud clicking noise, so Dell sent me another one as a replacement. But still… parts didnt last long. It still works fine though, I just have to ignore that big line on the side. However, performance wise, I love it.
But, if for some reason you want to go Dell, buy it brand new, so you have a warranty. Just in case.
I’d also be careful buying off of ebay… I bought my first laptop on ebay (IBM Thinkpad 600E) and I loved that thing, except for, the BATTERY was bad…. so I had to plug it in for it to work…. which defeats the purpose of a LAPTOP. hah… but yeah some people might tell you the battery is good just to sell it to you, so just be careful, with that in mind, if you buy off of ebay.
Look around on Tigerdirect, there’s some good deals. such as this one…

And that is exactly how it was after I loaded the optimized defaults and restarted.
