Yes, but that has to be set for each conversation.

That option is not present in the preferences, only on a window-by-window basis. At least I don’t see it on mine.

Try doing it both ways. If you have it set in preferences, the whole window background color switches, including behind your screen name. I hate the looks of this. If you set it on a window-by-window basis, only the text you write will have the new background color.
