Bwahahaha . . . I’ll be hearing that Wheeeeeeee in my dreams. Thanks!
PolarBearNPRParticipantI’m glad your parents trust you to do the right thing oz. Keepin’ you all safe is what parents are all about *looks about nervously for kids*
How do you think teachers should help not-so-computerly kids as yourself stay safe on the internet/IM/etc? What tips do you have for kids that are new to this type of forum – safety-wise?
PolarBearNPRParticipantThanks williamlee. I agree with your assessment of how to raise our own kids (we have two and let them explore as their maturity dictates), but I guess I’m trying to get at how to teach my students, who may not have the parental support or involvement that ours do, to use these technologies wisely and safely.
PolarBearNPRParticipantI’ve heard the kids talking about MySpace and Xanga; as well as have heard/read the news reports of bad things happening being linked with kids using those *places* (don’t know exactly what they’re called).
Question (and maybe this is answered in another area of BBB – I haven’t used the search yet *blush*):
How do we help kids use the internet and IMing safely?
Most grown-ups have heard that parents should
1) Put the computer in the family room and keep a close eye on its usage
2) Install blocking and tracking software
3) Watch the kids for unusual behavior signifying a changeBut, as an educator who feels the internet has a wealth of information to share as well as a place for kids to connect to others of like interests in an environment where they can experiment with being someone else or can totally be themselves since no one can judge their appearance; I’d really like to know how to help them become safe users of this vast domain.
Any thoughts? Or is there already a forum where this is/has been discusssed?
PolarBearNPRParticipantI don’t know if adults act like children or vice versa, but I certainly rely on strategies learned during my elementary education degree program when teaching both. Food is always a great motivator as are games and moving and new technologies – hence my stopping by here.
Thank you all for the very welcoming welcome.
PolarBearNPRParticipantAt the moment I’m employed teaching reading to kindergarten and first graders but I work with middle-schoolers at church and with the Scouts; and have taught adults as well. I’m hoping to be back in the classroom for next school year. I like to change it up a bit every seven or so years.
