It sounds like you aren’t even connecting with Trillian. Have a look at the status window to see what’s going on (and copy/paste the results here).
To see the status window, click on the dot for the service you’re trying to connect to (blue for MSN, yellow for AIM, etc) then click “show status window”.
There’s no need to reinstall, since there’s a couple of other ways to get round this problem. The best even groups set globally back at the bottom (with set globally away), but that requires a bit of digging into Trillian’s files. The simplest is to just recreate set globally back yourself:
- Right click on the system tray and choose preferences.
- Choose the “away mode” section in the prefs dialog.
- Click the “add” button in the bottom right of that page.
- Click the “advanced” button in the dialog that pops up.
- Change everything to be what you want it.
- Give it an easy to remember label (like “set away”).
- Click save!
Incidentally, you can make as many away messages like this as you like, all with different settings.
Can you attach the .dmp file (in a zip)? This might give a clue what part of Trillian is having trouble on your system.
There isn’t a plugin to change the AIM idle time (it isn’t possible for a plugin to affect that, in fact).
Try this:
1) Open Trillian preferences.
2) Select the message windows page.
3) Click the “Reset” button about halfway down (note what it does first).Spit from hiding Trillian on company network.

Well the worse that can happen is that it doesn’t work, and you have to rename it back. But even if it works, the connection’s Trillian makes to the internet should be obvious to your IT guy (if he’s worth his salt).
Sorry, when you said you add a user I assumed you meant you already had their screen name. It’s not possible to search one network from the other in Trillian, if you want to do that you’ll have to make an account on AIM too.
Well, the Trillian forum doesn’t seem very active to me, spreading those few posts over three forums seems a bit thin. Still, maybe it just seems that way to me because it’s the only forum I look at, so if you think they’re enough go for it.
The only thing I would say is don’t split the Trillian forums in the hope that it will force there to be more posts, because I very much doubt it will.
Well “exchange 5” just means “public room” on AIM, so that’s fine (in fact if you look at the goaim: addresses of the rooms in suggested chats you’ll notice they all contain the clause “exchange=5”).
I’ve just tried in Trillian 3.1 Basic, and although it takes 10 to 20 seconds to join a room (and sometimes fails) it does often work. If I tried to join “Chat 1” or “Chat 2” it always just sent me to “Chat” instead though, I don’t know if that’s a problem.
Nope, in Trillian Basic click on the AIM connection icon (a yellow circle) then “join a chat room”, where you’ll be able to type the name of a chat room in (or “find a chat room” for inspiration on what room to join).
However, if you manage to pick out any conversation amoungst all the porn bot messages, you’re a better man than I.
If you look in prefs under chatting services -> (medium name) -> misc (or DCC for IRC) you’ll see options related to the port(s) for outgoing file transfers (except yahoo, which doesn’t have file tranfers in 0.74). If you’re behind a router you’ll need to open matching ports for people to be able to connect inbound to you (which is what happens when you send a file).
If you’re having trouble receiving files, chances are good that the person you’re receiving from needs to go through the above procedure, although it can’t hurt for you to try it first.
