Political posturing? yup I’ll give that a 95% possibility.
Micro$ofts problem with IM is that its free, that kinda hurts when yr so arrogant that you assume God is the CEO, and the dollar is king. I guess the knowledge that they are not top dog in IM gets up their nose too.
Always the late player, I think their bid to control IM missed a few beats way back when.
I mean, get real, why do they not offer interoperability with the other players?, the little boys can do it.
Why the hell should AOL give them their user base?
Wow, from a non lover of AOL, What am I saying? That windows messenger requires the new OS.. XP? who cares. Blackmail tastes foul whoever uses it. Screw you Bill.
Count the losers on one hand if they pull that stunt.Dont get me wrong, we need more players in the field. We need more of them to be honest and just supply the programs that we will use or get off the horse n walk back to camp. It seems to me to be far too late to try to ‘own’ the game now.

So if it happens it may be as an after-market product.
Not that its a major hurdle for most members here, surely we are able to download what we want.
Does AOL want interoperability? They wont ‘talk’ to ICQ yet.
Shame AOL, SHAME.Edited by – rustedtight on 06/17/2001 12:14:16 PM
rustedtightMemberNot having read the reports, I’ll step out on a limb in anycase.
1. If its interoperable, I for one will use it, assuming its compatible with windows other OS’s. As I’m sure it wont be then it is unlikely to reside on my computer.
2. AOL I’m equally sure will sleep easy, No threat is there.

rustedtightMemberLook up Gaim, its also Aim compatible as well as interoperable with the other major players. Neat, works well, n doesnt waste cell dollars.
rustedtightMemberOh, great.
A cell phone that cost me a fortune to run (here).
And Linux…….. a 5% OS.
gimme a break, got anything interesting?
PS. I run Linux.
I own a cell phone.
Watcha got for BeOS?.rustedtightMemberscene 2.
An equally ridiculous moment when I believe the player is doing it to improve my experience and to give me mobility across platforms.
OK its handy there’s no denying that. But umm why do they jelously protect their user list and foil interoperability?
Is it because I am the bait in a larger game?
IF, If they were honest they would accept interoperability, they wont cos I AM the bait in a game to attract advertisers.
Eventually the user window will get smaller as the advert window gets larger. Its your choice which IM you use, personally I dont enjoy being a sucker.rustedtightMemberOuch! thats a mean bug. Kinda like windows huh? and that bug has been there since win 95 that I’m aware of. Bummer.
Now I see your concern. lets hope these guys are faster than Redmond.rustedtightMemberOK big players, lets assume for one ridiculous moment that I believe you, its for my convenience, its to help me that YOU keep MY data on YOUR servers.
Simple for you to provide me with access to this data (MY data) to modify it as I see fit. Let ME maintain the integrity of MY data stored on YOUR server. let ME remove embarrassing data from MY files.
What? you wont? why? you use it how? its now YOURS?
Uh huh, and you’ll respect copyright too i’m sure.rustedtightMemberInstant messaging safe? private?
There’s a joke.
From script kiddies intercepting intransit messages, to businesses storing personal buddy list on their servers. Those lists were perfectly safe on my system why do they want them? a profit making business wants my data? my contacts? my surfing habits? to help me?. Oh, sure they do.
I’m waiting for the benefits, so far i’ve seen lots of unwanted adds, I’ve seen a major player rapped over the knuckles for attempting to sell portions of its client list. while interoperability is witheld by the same beneficent player. Gimme a break guys, I may be your pawn but I aint stupid.Edited by – rustedtight on 05/29/2001 06:29:29 AM

rustedtightMemberthanx Jeff for the reminder. I downloaded Maxxchat back in feb. and never got around to installing it, well I did so, and am kicking myself for not doing so earlier. Sure first day it was slow, zzzzzzzzzz so slow. Day 2 and its colours came through, neat, certainly attractive lotz of extra goodies, I commiserate with mulpiple user setups cos it looks so good and worked well, this program could show the big boys a thing a two about layout and style. And where the hell are the adverts? thankfully missing. I think this one is worth watching. Oh yeah, it works with AIM.
rustedtightMemberThe version of Imici that I have is password protected, as is my email address that is requied to retrieve my Imici password. Thats enough to foil the average user I think. However as a sole user on my computer its not a major concern, but of interest certainly.
Interoperability? yup its got that and it works, unlike odigo that this past week lost AIM once again.
A vote of confidence? OK put me down for a positive vote, it works, its interoperable, and it looks neat…… God I miss those adverts.rustedtightMemberthanx Jeff.
Now please explain the purpose of a moderator in this forum. Are you for census? are you for political correct comment? will you exercise your right to remove comment that does not match your belief/understanding/desires for direction of the forum?.rustedtightMemberI like jeff have been online a lil while. My first IM was ICQ and I was fascinated with it. Friends came out of the ether to chat and the warmth of companionship of those days stayed with me, although I may not use correct english or spelling it seemed of little consequence to my buddies. Many of them are still of imense importance to me. During a bad time in my life these buddies helped to keep me in touch with reality. All I can say to new IM’ers is dont sell this system short, It works, it keeps you in contact with ‘real’ people. OK there are some dogs out there but hell, the world needs its dogs to remind us theres a better way. I found it in chat IM’s.
rustedtightMemberJabber is open source. Whatever that means its still a good IM. It does its thing without adds, without a weather forcast, hell its just an IM, I need an IM thats interoperable up to the limit of the big boys who “own” IM, I for one like it, it works, its stable, on my system wont bump into other programs and just quietly does its thing without fanfare. Hell, I love it.
