I think a BigBlueBall Tab would be sweet. Its pretty easy to do. The only drawback is the viewing size of MSN compared with the website. So if anyone knows of a better way let me know, but….
I have created the code to put in a BigBlueBall forum TAB in MSN Messenger 6. Its really not that exciting, but it will let you view the site from within MSN. For those of you who are knowledgeable in HTML or some form of coding this should be quite simple. Add this code:
Code:
BigBlueBall.com
BigBlueBall.com Everything about instant messaging
https://bigblueball.com/forums/active.asp
false
Insert the above code in ConfigCache.XML located here:
%systemroot%Documents and Settings%username%Application DataMicrosoftMSN Messenger%passportID%
If you’re confident with XML or HTML you’ll see where to insert it. Ensure it is inserted correctly as otherwise MSN Messenger will re-cache the XML file.
This is the first time i have played with the Tabs function, so please let me know if this sucks or what could enhance it.
I put this Topic in suggestions because thats basically what it is, even though i have unofficially created and implemented it succesfully. I also thought this might keep it from the n00bs who won’t know what the heck I’m talking about.:D
June 22, 2003 at 6:22 am #94618shifterMemberJeff, is it possible to create a page with only the current links to news and forum topics? For example Neowin’s TAB
June 22, 2003 at 8:18 am #94590Jeff HesterKeymasterIt’s a great idea, Shifter. I’ll put something together later today. Right now I’m going to catch up on some much-needed sleep.
June 22, 2003 at 11:06 am #94626freddyMemberA similar thing can be done for Yahoo! Messenger too. If there was a page of a suitable size, I could write the html tab for it.
June 22, 2003 at 4:40 pm #94591Jeff HesterKeymasterShifter, use this URL for testing: https://bigblueball.com/msn/tab/ and give me your feedback. It currently returns only MSN info. Does that make sense for an MSN tab?
Freddy, you can use the same URL to get a feel for whether the content and format is appropriate for a Yahoo tab. Same question to you: Does it make sense to put only Yahoo-related stuff there?

Actually, it currently returns only a 404 error for me.
June 22, 2003 at 5:00 pm #94589Jeff HesterKeymasterWhoops… my bad. Here’s the correct URL:
https://bigblueball.com/im/msn/tab/Must… drink… coffee!!!
June 22, 2003 at 5:42 pm #94625freddyMemberI would think maybe general news part at top of page, maybe 3 or 4 lines, then Yahoo! for the rest of the page??
Here is how it looks:
I can write some instructions, it’s a bit of registry editing, and 1BMP file download for the little earth logo. I can also write a C program to simulate the registry entries, with source code available.
June 22, 2003 at 6:56 pm #94624freddyMemberActually, it’s just a registry import file and a set of very simple instructions. No need for a C program. When there is a Yahoo! page ready, I will send you the stuff I have. Can your email take mail from .co.uk now?
June 22, 2003 at 7:13 pm #94617shifterMemberJeff, it works perfectly!
Here is a copy of my ConfigCache.XML with instructions on how/where to install it.
Also Jeff if you want to you can host this icon or your own preffered custom one for the Tab, and I will update the code.
June 22, 2003 at 7:29 pm #94623freddyMemberI used that icon too for yahoo, i stole the favicon.ico to get it.
Yahoo! wont load the icon from the net though, only from the pc, so that will be in the Yahoo! instructions. As there isn’t one for Yahoo! though, I am not going to post the instructions.
June 22, 2003 at 7:59 pm #94616shifterMemberJeff I wouldn’t mind seeing more of the Forums categories underneath the MSN stuff. I know it makes sense to have just the MSN one, but I would like to see the Random Ramblings, Suggestions, Announcements, etc.. A refresh button in the footer would be good.
Perhaps having a simple MSN only TAB for those who are only interested in MSN related news and forums. And then create another more general TAB for those who want all the news and forum topics. Then users can choose which version they would prefer?
freddy, would i sound dumb if i told you i just edited the globe from main title logo for that. Never noticed the favicon…
June 22, 2003 at 8:04 pm #94608DavidParticipantJust added this, man is it cool!
A Great idea Shifter!
Maybe show other forum category’s, Jeff?
June 22, 2003 at 11:24 pm #94622freddyMemberMaybe have 3 sections. News could be small section. Then a large section for a specific messenger’s forum posts, then another section for other forum posts.
Just an idea.
I just thought I would take the icon because I don’t like messing with images, and it was the right size!!
June 23, 2003 at 12:07 am #94602FaizanMemberWOW, this is so COOL!
Excelent idea, Shifter!Hmm it would be good to make it for the whole forum not just MSN category. Like first 10 active topics from the whole forum, not from one category!
